[generalNote]: Hanes gweinyddol / Braslun bywgraffyddol | Administrative history | Biographical sketch Nodyn | Note Aneirin Talfan Davies, OBE, MA (1909-80), was a writer and broadcaster. He was born in 1909 in Felindre, Henllan, Carmarthenshire, the son of the Rev. William Talfan Davies (1873-1938); his younger brother was Alun Talfan Davies, QC (1913-2000). He attended Gowerton Grammar School, but left aged 14 to become a pharmacist's apprentice. While working in London he became interested in literature and theology. He ran a pharmacy in Swansea from 1938 until 1941, when it was destroyed during an air raid. He began a new career with the BBC, reading and editing the Welsh-language news on radio. After the War he joined BBC Wales in Cardiff, becoming Head of Programmes,1966-1970, until his retirement. He was active in the Church in Wales as a writer and lay preacher and was involved with a number of cultural and literary bodies within Wales. Aneirin Talfan Davies letters, poetry, literary criticism, mainly on English literature and theology, and lyrics and libretti with Arwel Hughes (1909-1988). He edited the magazines Heddiw and Barn, and contributed columns to Barn and the Western Mail. With his brother Alun, he co-founded Llyfrau'r Dryw, Llandybie (now Christopher Davies (Publishers) Ltd.). He wrote and edited many books including Eliot, Pwshcin, Poe (Llandybie, 1942), Yr Alltud (London, 1944), Gwyr Llên (London, 1948), Munudau Gyda'r Beirdd (Llandybie, 1954), Crwydro Sir Gâr (Llandybie, 1955), Dylan: Druid of a Broken Body (Denbigh, 1964), Gyda Gwawr a Bore (Llandybie, 1970) and two anthologies of his poetry, Y Ddau Lais (London, 1937) and Diannerch Erchwyn (Swansea: C. Davies, 1975). He married in 1936 and had two sons, Owen and Geraint. He died in 1980.     WELSH-MEDIUM AND BILINGUAL EDUCATION CATRIN REDKNAP W. GWYN LEWIS SIAN RHIANNON WILLIAMS JANET LAUGHARNE Catrin Redknap leads the Welsh Language Board pre-16 Education Unit. The Unit maintains a strategic overview of Welsh-medium and bilingual education and training. Before joining the Board she lectured on Spanish and Sociolinguistics at the University of Cardiff. Gwyn Lewis lectures in the College of Education and Lifelong Learning at the University of Wales, Bangor, with specific responsibility for Welsh language education within the primary and secondary teacher training courses. A joint General Editor of Education Transactions, his main research interests include Welsh-medium and bilingual education, bilingualism and child language development. Sian Rhiannon Williams lectures on History at the University of Wales Institute Cardiff. Her research interests include the history of women in the teaching profession and other aspects of the history of education in Wales. Based on her doctoral thesis, her first book was a study of the social history of the Welsh language in industrial Monmouthshire. She has published widely on the history of Gwent and on women’s history in Wales, and has co- edited a volume on the history of women in the south Wales valleys during the interwar period. She is reviews editor of the Welsh Journal of Education. Janet Laugharne lectures in the Cardiff School of Education, University of Wales Institute Cardiff, and is the School’s Director of Research. She is interested in bilingualism and bilingual education and has written on this area in relation to Welsh, English and other community languages in Britain. She is one of the principal investigators for a project, commissioned by the Welsh Assembly Government, to evaluate the implementation of the new Foundation Stage curriculum for 3-7 year-olds in Wales.

At the testator's request the archive is to be divided into two groups to be known as the 'Maxwell Fraser Bequest' and the `Trefin Archdderwydd Cymru Bequest'. The `Maxwell Fraser Bequest' contains a substantial corpus of correspondence, diaries, drafts and typescripts of books and articles, broadcast scripts, material connected with the testator's researches on Lord and Lady Llanover, a very large number of theatre programmes, a small group of letters and papers relating to the testator's parents and to her uncle, Lovat Fraser (1871-1926), the prominent journalist and author of India under Curzon and after (1911). The 'Trefin Archdderwydd Cymru Bequest' is a much smaller archive consisting of manuscripts, papers, letters, diaries, drafts and typescripts of poems, articles and other compositions including translations and broadcast scripts, and scrapbooks relating to the National Eisteddfod and the Gorsedd of Bards.

There are thirteen files of poetry, 1947-65, some typescript and some holograph; one file contains a letter, 16 July 1951, from K. M. Baxter, author of the play ‘Gerald of Wales’. There is also a number of loose sheets containing typescript poems, a few grouped together as if in preparation for publication under the titles ‘Ten Poems’, ‘Seventeen Poems’, and ‘Under Moon and Stars’; a typescript copy of The Chosen One (Fortune Press, 1952), with reviews and letters; and press cuttings of poems which appeared in the Western Mail, The Tribune, and The Spectator, 1962-6. The holograph prose material includes five chapters of ‘The Flower and the Grass, a satire’; essays on ‘Benevenuto Cellini and his autobiography’ and ‘The Age of Saints in Wales’, and notes of an address on ‘Some Legends and Traditions of Teifyside’, 1948. There is a typescript copy of ‘Vignettes and Silhouettes: a miscellany’ which appears to be prepared for publication, and also typescript essays on ‘The Interpretation of History’ and ‘A Glory that was Spain’. The music is all holograph and consists of songs composed to words by the composer and others,-- some of these were broadcast in recitals in 1937-8, a few descants, and hymn-tunes. There are a large number of letters to and from Mrs. Coombe Tennant (who was initiated as an Honorary Member of the Gorsedd in 1918, promoted to full membership in 1923, and given the official title of 'Mistress of the Robes' in 1928) relating mainly to matters concerned with the Gorsedd Robes and Regalia and to the Gorsedd Ceremony. There are also letters in connection with various Eisteddfodau, particularly the Arts and Crafts sections, and a group of letters, etc., relating to the initiation of HRH Princess Elizabeth as a member of the Gorsedd at Mountain Ash Eisteddfod, 1946. The manuscripts and papers include memoranda, notes and reports of the Bardic Robes Committee, 1922- 52; minutes of 'Bwrdd Gweinyddol yr Orsedd', 1923-44, and of 'Bwrdd yr Orsedd', 1938-54; articles by Mrs. Coombe Tennant entitled 'A Chapter of Gorsedd History', 'Vanishing Beauty', and 'Beautiful Things made in Wales', 1928-50; and an article on 'Gorsedd y Beirdd' by A. E. Jones ('Cynan'). DOI 10.5871/jba/003.211 Posted 17 December 2015. © The British Academy 2015 ‘Curse, bless, me now’: Dylan Thomas and Saunders Lewis Chatterton Lecture on Poetry read 24 October 2014 TUDUR HALLAM Abstract: Dylan Thomas, the Swansea-born writer of English, and Saunders Lewis, the Wallasey-born writer of Welsh, are usually set in differing discursive camps. Memorable quotations—‘I cannot read Welsh’, to quote Dylan; ‘He belongs to the English’, to quote Saunders—continually drive them apart. Focusing on 1938, the year in which Dylan Thomas published his elegy to his aunt, ‘After the Funeral’, and in which Saunders Lewis delivered his lecture ‘Is There an Anglo-Welsh Literature?’, this paper considers how the former’s life and work might be read differently in conjunction with the latter’s. The authors’ differences and similarities are discussed, and the work of William Williams Pantycelyn, author of ‘Guide me, O Thou Great Jehovah’ is read in the light of Saunders Lewis’s classic study of his romanticism so as to suggest not only a tangible link between the two poetic non-conformists, but also a means of appreciating Dylan Thomas’s own aesthetic development as a poet. Memorable quotations—‘I cannot read Welsh’, to quote Dylan; ‘He belongs to the English’, to quote Saunders—continually drive them apart. Focusing on 1938, the year in which Dylan Thomas published his elegy to his aunt, ‘After the Funeral’, and in which Saunders Lewis delivered his lecture ‘Is There an Anglo-Welsh Literature?’, this paper considers how the former’s life and work might be read differently in conjunction with the latter’s.
