Dyma ddegawd sefydlu Cymdeithas yr Iaith Gymraeg (1962), y gwrthdystio a enillodd i Gymru Ddeddf Iaith 1967, yr ymgyrch am arwyddion ffyrdd dwyieithog, a dechrau’r ymgyrch am wasanaeth radio a theledu Cymraeg mwy boddhaol. Dyma hefyd ddegawd boddi Tryweryn (1965), buddugoliaeth etholiadol gyntaf Plaid Cymru yn is-etholiad Caerfyrddin (1966), a helyntion yr Arwisgo (1969). Carcharwyd rhyw ddeugain o Gymry ifainc o ganlyniad i’w safiad dros hawliau’r Gymraeg, ac yn 1969 lladdwyd dau fir ifanc mewn ffrwydrad a oedd yn gysylltiedig â’r ymgyrch wrth-Arwisgo. Aelodau o Fudiad Amddiffyn Cymru oedd y ddau a fu farw, mudiad a oedd, fel Byddin Rhyddid Cymru, yn arddel dulliau mwy milwriaethus, a milwrol, o weithredu na Chymdeithas yr Iaith. Yn 1971 ffurfiwyd Adfer, mudiad di-drais arall fel Cymdeithas yr Iaith, ond bod ei fryd ar unieithrwydd a gwarchod y Fro Gymraeg. Cyplys- wyd ymdeimlad cryf â’r bygythiadau i ddyfodol yr ardaloedd gwledig, Cymraeg eu hiaith – y mewnlifiad Seisnig a datblygiadau technolegol yr oes – ag ymchwydd newydd o Gymreictod hyderus ac ymosodol. Drwy gyd-ddigwyddiad mae’r deng mlynedd ar hugain rhwng dyddiad cychwynnol y drafodaeth a’i dyddiad clo yn cyfateb i hyd arferol y bwlch damcaniaethol rhwng un genhedlaeth a’r llall, ac mae’r un bwlch fel petai wedi’i ymgorffori’n symbolaidd yn y gwahaniaeth rhwng awyrgylch y Gymru gyn- ac ôl-Refferendwm. Serch hynny, ni fu’r ail gyfnod yn un marw, heb brotest nac enillion. Dyma gyfnod yr ymgyrch losgi ddeuddeng mlynedd (1979–91) a briodolid i Feibion Glyndfir; a dyma, ar wastad gwahanol o weithredu, gyfnod buddugoliaeth sefydlu Sianel Pedwar Cymru (1982). Dywedwyd am y chwyldro cymdeithasol a diwyll- iannol a ymledodd drwy wledydd y Gorllewin yn ystod y chwedegau (neu’r chwedegau ‘hir’) na fyddai dim yn union yr un fath wedi hynny.1 Mae’r un peth yn wir am y chwyldro cenedlaetholaidd a gyd-ddigwyddodd ag ef yng Nghymru.2 Rhagymadrodd xiii Pages FfugLen:Pages Canon 30/6/08 16:34 Page xiv Efallai nad oedd dylanwad y chwyldro hwnnw lawn mor amlwg yn y nofel ag yr oedd yng nghanu protest gwladgarol y beirdd. Wedi dweud hynny, nid oes amheuaeth na ddylid cysylltu’r adfywiad yn hanes y nofel Gymraeg â’r cyffro cenedlaetholaidd.3 Yn hynny o beth, nid yw hanes llenyddiaeth Cymru’n wahanol i hanes llenyddiaethau cenhedloedd eraill a fagodd awch am gael rheoli eu bywydau eu hunain. Bu rhyngweithiad llenyddiaeth ac imperialaeth yn ddylanwad grymus ar hanes mudiadau llenyddol a beirniadol yr ugeinfed ganrif yn gyffredinol.4 A gwnaeth y nofel gyfraniad arbennig i dwf cenedlaetholdeb Ewropeaidd ddiwedd y ddeunawfed a dechrau’r bedwaredd ganrif ar bymtheg; hi oedd y ffurf lenyddol, yng ngeiriau Timothy Brennan, ‘that was crucial in defining the nation as an “imagined community”‘.5 Cyflawnai’r nofel Gymraeg gynnar yr un gwaith o ddarlunio’r genedl i’r genedl ei hun, cyfrifoldeb yr arwydda amryw o’r nofelwyr eu bod yn ymwybodol ohono.

    BC c.5000 - Neolithic (new stone age) Period begins; first evidence of farming appears; stone axes, antler combs, pottery in common use. c.4000 - Construction of the "Sweet Track" (named for its discoverer, Ray Sweet) begun; many similar raised, wooden walkways were constructed at this time providing a way to traverse the low, boggy, swampy areas in the Somerset Levels, near Glastonbury; earliest-known camps or communities appear (ie. Hembury, Devon). c.3500-3000 - First appearance of long barrows and chambered tombs; at Hambledon Hill (Dorset), the primitive burial rite known as "corpse exposure" was practiced, wherein bodies were left in the open air to decompose or be consumed by animals and birds. c.3000-2500 - Castlerigg Stone Circle (Cumbria), one of Britain's earliest and most beautiful, begun; Pentre Ifan (Dyfed), a classic example of a chambered tomb, constructed; Bryn Celli Ddu (Anglesey), known as the "mound in the dark grove," begun, one of the finest examples of a "passage grave." c.2500 - Bronze Age begins; multi-chambered tombs in use (ie. West Kennet Long Barrow) first appearance of henge "monuments;" construction begun on Silbury Hill, Europe's largest prehistoric, man-made hill (132 ft); "Beaker Folk," identified by the pottery beakers (along with other objects) found in their single burial sites. c.2500-1500 - Most stone circles in British Isles erected during this period; pupose of the circles is uncertain, although most experts speculate that they had either astronomical or ritual uses. c.2300 - Construction begun on Britain's largest stone circle at Avebury. c.2000 - Metal objects are widely manufactured in England about this time, first from copper, then with arsenic and tin added; woven cloth appears in Britain, evidenced by findings of pins and cloth fasteners in graves; construction begun on Stonehenge's inner ring of bluestones.

    WELSH-MEDIUM AND BILINGUAL EDUCATION CATRIN REDKNAP W. GWYN LEWIS SIAN RHIANNON WILLIAMS JANET LAUGHARNE Catrin Redknap leads the Welsh Language Board pre-16 Education Unit. The Unit maintains a strategic overview of Welsh-medium and bilingual education and training. Before joining the Board she lectured on Spanish and Sociolinguistics at the University of Cardiff. Gwyn Lewis lectures in the College of Education and Lifelong Learning at the University of Wales, Bangor, with specific responsibility for Welsh language education within the primary and secondary teacher training courses. A joint General Editor of Education Transactions, his main research interests include Welsh-medium and bilingual education, bilingualism and child language development. Sian Rhiannon Williams lectures on History at the University of Wales Institute Cardiff. Her research interests include the history of women in the teaching profession and other aspects of the history of education in Wales. Based on her doctoral thesis, her first book was a study of the social history of the Welsh language in industrial Monmouthshire. She has published widely on the history of Gwent and on women’s history in Wales, and has co- edited a volume on the history of women in the south Wales valleys during the interwar period. She is reviews editor of the Welsh Journal of Education. Janet Laugharne lectures in the Cardiff School of Education, University of Wales Institute Cardiff, and is the School’s Director of Research. She is interested in bilingualism and bilingual education and has written on this area in relation to Welsh, English and other community languages in Britain. She is one of the principal investigators for a project, commissioned by the Welsh Assembly Government, to evaluate the implementation of the new Foundation Stage curriculum for 3-7 year-olds in Wales.
