Rossouw has recently been appointed as Head of the Department Art History and Image Studies – University of the Free State, South Africa – where he lectures in the Programme in Film and Visual Media. His latest publications appear in Short Film Studies, Image & Text, and New Review of Film and Television Studies. Abstract This essay considers the prominent role of acts and gestures of walking – a persistent, though critically neglected motif – in Terrence Malick’s cinema. In recognition of many intimate connections between walking and contemplation, I argue that Malick’s particular staging of walking characters, always in harmony with the camera’s own “walks”, comprises a key source for the “contemplative” effects that especially philo- sophical commentators like to attribute to his style. Achieving such effects, however, requires that viewers be sufficiently- en gaged by the walking presented on-screen. Accordingly, Mal- ick’s films do not fixate on single, extended episodes of walk- ing, as one would find in Slow Cinema. They instead strive to enact an experience of walking that induces in viewers a par- ticular sense of “walking-with”. In this regard, I examine Mal- ick’s continual reliance on two strategies: (a) Steadicam fol- lowing-shots of wandering figures, which involve viewers in their motion of walking; and (b) a strict avoidance of long takes in favor of cadenced montage, which invites viewers into a reflective rhythm of walking. Chemical Wed- ding is proud to be partners with the American Society of Cinematographers in bringing you Toland ASC Digital Assistant for the iPhone or iPod Touch. FCinematography is a strange and wonderful craft that combines cutting-edge technology, skill and the management of both time and personnel. Its practitioners “paint” with light whilst juggling some pretty challenging logistics. We think it fitting to dedicate this application to Gregg Toland, ASC, whose work on such classic films as Citizen Kane revolutionized the craft of cinematography. While not every aspect of the ASC Manual is included in Toland, it is designed to give solutions to most of cinematography’s technical challenges. This application is not meant to replace the ASC Manual, but rather serve as a companion to it. We strongly encourage you to refer to the manual for a rich and complete understanding of cin- ematography techniques. The formulae that are the backbone of this application can be found within the ASC Manual. The camera and lens data have largely been taken from manufacturers’ speci- fications and field-tested where possible. While every effort has been made to perfect this application, Chemical Wedding and the ASC offer Toland on an “as is” basis; we cannot guarantee that Toland will be infallible. That said, Toland has been rigorously tested by some extremely exacting individuals and we are confident of its accuracy. Since many issues related to cinematography are highly subjective, especially with re- gard to Depth of Field and HMI “flicker” speeds, the results Toland provides are based upon idealized scenarios. -

Four Elements of Film Mise-en-scène Mise-en-scène is everything that the audience can see in the frame. This includes the set ⎯ whether on location or in a studio, and some studio sets are so large that they can fool you into thinking you are seeing an on-location shot ⎯ props, lighting, the actors, costumes, make-up, blocking (where actors and extras stand), and movement, whether choreographed or not. All kinds of movement, from crossing a room to a sword-fight, can be choreographed, not just dance. Mise-en-scène demonstrates how film is the ultimate collaborative art, requiring contributions from professionals with a wide variety of skills. Cinematography Cinematography is the way in which a shot is framed, lit, shadowed, and colored. The way a camera moves, stands still, or pans (stands still while changing where it points), the angle from which it views the action, whether it elevates (usually a crane shot, when the camera is mounted on a crane, but sometimes a director will employ a helicopter shot instead), whether it follows a particular actor or object (a tracking shot, also called a dolly shot, because the camera is placed on a dolly, meaning a small, wheeled platform), zooms in, zooms out ⎯ these all affect the way the audience views the action, whether literally or metaphorically. Think of cinematography as being to a film what a narrator is to prose fiction. Sound Sound is probably the element of film that people most often underestimate. It includes dialogue, ambient sound, sound effects, and music. Consider how a “Boing!” sound in the soundtrack would change how we view a love scene or a scene in which an old lady falls down. -

1 The Work of an Invisible Body: The Contribution of Foley Artists to On-Screen Effort Lucy Fife Donaldson, University of Reading Abstract: On-screen bodies are central to our engagement with film. As sensory film theory seeks to remind us, this engagement is sensuous and embodied: our physicality forms sympathetic, kinetic and empathetic responses to the bodies we see and hear. We see a body jump, run and crash and in response we tense, twitch and flinch. But whose effort are we responding to? The character’s? The actor’s? This article explores the contribution of an invisible body in shaping our responsiveness to on-screen effort, that of the foley artist. Foley artists recreate a range of sounds made by the body, including footsteps, breath, face punches, falls, and the sound clothing makes as actors walk or run. Foley is a functional element of the filmmaking process, yet accounts of foley work note the creativity involved in these performances, which add to characterisation and expressivity. Drawing on detailed analysis of sequences in Cabaret (Bob Fosse, 1972) and Die Hard (John McTiernan, 1988) which foreground exertion and kinetic movement through dance and physical action, this article considers the affective contribution of foley to the physical work depicted on-screen. In doing so, I seek to highlight the extent to which foley constitutes an expressive performance that furthers our sensuous perception and appreciation of film. On-screen bodies are central to our engagement with film; the ways they are framed and captured by the camera guides our attention to character and action, while their physical qualities invite a range of engagement from admiration, appreciation and desire to awe, fear and repugnance. -

The camera and the operator can mount the dolly and access a smooth horizontal or vertical movement while filming a scene, minimizing any possibility of visual shaking. During the execution of dolly shots, the camera is either moved towards the subject while the film is rolling, or away from the subject while filming. This process is usually referred to as ‘dollying in’ or ‘dollying out’. Establishing shot An establishing shot from Death in Venice (1971) by Luchino Visconti Establishing shots are generally shots that are used to relate the characters or individuals in the narrative to the situation, while contextualizing his presence in the scene. It is generally the shot that begins a scene, which shoulders the responsibility of conveying to the audience crucial impressions about the scene. Success in the Film Industry
1 Abstract This paper attempted to answer the research question, “What determines a film’s success at the domestic box office?” The authors used an OLS regression model on data set of 497 films from the randomly selected years 2005, 2006, 2007, 2009, and 2011, taking the top 100 films from each year. Domestic box-office receipts served as the dependent variable, with MPAA ratings, critical reviews, source material, release date, and number of screens acting as independent variables in the final regression. Results showed that source material, critical reviews, number of screens, release date, and some genres were statistically significant and positively contributed to a film’s domestic revenue. Introduction Each year in the United States, hundreds of films are released to domestic audiences in the hope that they will become the next “blockbuster.” The modern film industry, a business of nearly 10 billion dollars per year, is a cutthroat business (Box Office Mojo). According to industry statistics, six or seven of every ten films are unprofitable, making the business risky at best (Brewer, 2006). Given this inherent risk, how do film studios decide which films to place their bets on? Are there common factors, such as critical reviews, MPAA rating, or production budget, which explain one film’s monetary success relative to another? This question forms the basis of this research project. To answer it, we estimated an Ordinary Least Squares regression that attempted to explain the monetary success of the top films in five years out of the past decade. This regression expanded our original dataset, which used 100 randomly selected films from 2004. -

Chapter 4: Editing Film 125: The Textbook © Lynne Lerych The general idea behind editing in narrative film is the coordination of one shot with another in order to create a coherent, artistically pleasing, meaningful whole. The system of editing employed in narrative film is called continuity editing – its purpose is to create and provide efficient, functional transitions. Sounds simple enough, right?1 Yeah, no. It’s not really that simple. These three desired qualities of narrative film editing – coherence, artistry, and meaning – are not easy to achieve, especially when you consider what the film editor begins with. The typical shooting phase of a typical two-hour narrative feature film lasts about eight weeks. During that time, the cinematography team may record anywhere from 20 or 30 hours of film on the relatively low end – up to the 240 hours of film that James Cameron and his cinematographer, Russell Carpenter, shot for Titanic – which eventually weighed in at 3 hours and 14 minutes by the time it reached theatres. Most filmmakers will shoot somewhere in between these extremes. No matter how you look at it, though, the editor knows from the outset that in all likelihood less than ten percent of the film shot will make its way into the final product. As if the sheer weight of the available footage weren’t enough, there is the reality that most scenes in feature films are shot out of sequence – in other words, they are typically shot in neither the chronological order of the story nor the temporal order of the film. -
ASPECT RATIO Aspect Ratios Are One of the More Confusing Parts of Video
ASPECT RATIO Aspect ratios are one of the more confusing parts of video, although they used to be simple. That's because television and movie content was all about the same size, 4:3 (also known as 1.33:1, meaning that the picture is 1.33 times as long as it is high). The Academy Standard before 1952 was 1.37:1, so there was virtually no problem showing movies on TV. However, as TV began to cut into Hollywood's take at the theater, the quest was on to differentiate theater offerings in ways that could not be seen on TV. Thus, innovations such as widescreen film, Technicolor, and even 3-D were born. Widescreen film was one of the innovations that survived and has since dominated the cinema. Today, you tend to find films in one of two widescreen aspect ratios: 1. Academy Standard (or "Flat"), which has an aspect ratio of 1.85:1 2. Anamorphic Scope (or "Scope"), which has an aspect ratio of 2.35:1. Scope is also called Panavision or CinemaScope. HDTV is specified at a 16:9, or 1.78:1, aspect ratio.If your television isn't widescreen and you want to watch a widescreen film, you have a problem. The most common approach in the past has been what's called Pan and Scan. For each frame o a film, a decision is made as to what constitutes the action area. That part of the film frame is retained, and the rest is lost.. This can often leave out the best parts of a picture.
