TrainPlayer simulates operating a model railroad layout on the computer. It is designed for all types of model railroad fan, from the one who has built a railroad empire in the basement, to the one who dreams of doing so, to the one who never will, but just likes to run trains. Opening a layout file in TrainPlayer is like walking into a room and finding a fully-built model railroad with clean tracks, attractive scenery, a couple of trains, and a control panel sitting in the corner. You nudge the speed dial and one of the trains starts to move. You form a smile and crank up the speed. Welcome to TrainPlayer. TrainPlayer works with pictures of track plans which have been specially prepared by the addition of electronic tracks. The pictures might be renderings by Kalmbach artists, or digital output from your favorite CAD program, or scanned-in drawings made with pencil and paper. A set of features known as TrackLayer -- described in the second half of this manual -- is used to apply the track, switches, and turntables. In TrainPlayer, you add trains, cars, and stations, and you're ready to run. What's New in Version 7.2 What For? Q: Is there any point to moving little make-believe trains around an image of a model pretending to be a railroad? A: Sure. ● Explore layout designs. When you're thinking about designing a railroad, there is nothing handier than a book of track plans. Well-designed plans give you ideas about how different track configurations might work with your theme and fit in the space you have. Attractive artwork inspires you to think about the terrain and the scenery. TrainPlayer brings you some great track plans to browse, appreciate, and try. ● Develop operating plans. If you had an operating railroad and an unlimited supply of rolling stock, how would you go about running it? You need to figure out how to deliver goods and passengers for your customers, what cars you need to run on what schedule, how to avoid delaying the express while the local is tying up the main line. With TrainPlayer, you can develop timetables and schedules by driving the layout and letting the program keep track of times and distances. ● Test your equipment. Do you already have a collection of cars? Customize the ones in the program so they match yours, and see if your 86-foot flatcars look realistic going around the 16-inch curves on your target plan. ● Learn train moves. It isn't obvious how to shuffle a dense yard of cars when you have a schedule to meet. With TrainPlayer, you can learn by practicing. Figure out how to classify cars so they're on the right tracks at the right time. Learn to minimize the number of moves it takes. Try your hand at a switching puzzle. ● Teach train moves. If you're already a skilled operator, use TrainPlayer to spread your knowledge. Use the recorder to capture a sequence of moves, and play it back for the learners. Demonstrate how to handle a meet on the main line, or switch an industrial siding. ● Share your layout. If you have a layout that welcomes visiting operators, TrainPlayer is an excellent introduction and training tool for them. Send them a copy of your layout before their visit and they'll feel far more comfortable operating with you! The first covers TrainPlayer, and describes how to run trains on prepared layouts. The second covers TrackLayer, and describes how to prepare the layouts. We don't really expect you to read the manual. Most of what you need to know about TrainPlayer you can figure out by opening a layout and running trains. But you might glance through to pick up tips which could enhance your enjoyment. TrackLayer is a little more involved, so it is recommended that you at least go through the TrackLayer tutorial. The manual is organized by topic. The first chapter tells how to open a layout, what you'll see, and how you can adjust the screen as you like. The next two chapters describe how to run trains, and how to assemble and dismantle them.

As sensory film theory seeks to remind us, this engagement is sensuous and embodied: our physicality forms sympathetic, kinetic and empathetic responses to the bodies we see and hear. We see a body jump, run and crash and in response we tense, twitch and flinch. But whose effort are we responding to? The character’s? The actor’s? This article explores the contribution of an invisible body in shaping our responsiveness to on-screen effort, that of the foley artist. Foley artists recreate a range of sounds made by the body, including footsteps, breath, face punches, falls, and the sound clothing makes as actors walk or run. Foley is a functional element of the filmmaking process, yet accounts of foley work note the creativity involved in these performances, which add to characterisation and expressivity. Drawing on detailed analysis of sequences in Cabaret (Bob Fosse, 1972) and Die Hard (John McTiernan, 1988) which foreground exertion and kinetic movement through dance and physical action, this article considers the affective contribution of foley to the physical work depicted on-screen. In doing so, I seek to highlight the extent to which foley constitutes an expressive performance that furthers our sensuous perception and appreciation of film. On-screen bodies are central to our engagement with film; the ways they are framed and captured by the camera guides our attention to character and action, while their physical qualities invite a range of engagement from admiration, appreciation and desire to awe, fear and repugnance.

The Dance is about movement not about positions: when you film the dance you are filming the movement not a sequence of positions and in order to completely comprehend this concept you must understand what movement is: like the French philosopher Gilles Deleuze said “w​ e always tend to confuse movement with traversed space…” ​1.​ The movement is the act of traversing, when you film the Dance you film an act not an aestheticizing image of a subject. At the beginning it is difficult to understand how to film something that is abstract like the movement but with practice you will start to focus on what really matters and you will start to forget about the dancers. Movement is life and the more you can capture it the more the characters are alive therefore more real in a way that you can almost touch them, almost dance with them. The Dance is a movement with a rhythm and when you film it you have to become part of the whole rhythm, like when you add an instrument to a music composition, the vocabulary of cinema is just another layer on the whole art work.

It gath- ers light from the scene and transmits that light onto the flat surface of the film to form an image that represents size, depth, and other dimensions of the scene. One difference between the eye and the camera,, though, is that photographic lenses may be changed, and each type of lens will render perspective in different ways. If two different lenses photograph the same scene, the perspective relations in the result- ing images could be drastically different. A wide-angle lens could exaggerate the depth you see down the track or could make the foreground trees and buildings seem to bulge; atelephoto lens could drastically reduce the depth, making the trees seem very close together and nearly the same size. The focal length alters the perceived magnification, depth, and scale of things in the image. We usually distinguish three sorts of lenses on the basis of their effects on perspective: 1.     In Audio-Vision, the French composer-filmmaker-critic Michel Chion presents a reassessment of the audiovisual media since sound's revolutionary debut in 1927 and sheds light on the mutual influ­ ences of sound and image in audiovisual perception. Chion expands on the arguments from his influential trilogy on sound in cinema—La Voix au cinema, Le Son au cinema, and La Toile trouee—while providing an overview of the functions and aesthetics of sound in film and television. He considers the effects of evolving audiovisual technologies such as widescreen, multi- track sound, and Dolby stereo on audio-vision, influences of sound on the perception of space and time, and contemporary forms of audio-vision embodied in music videos, video art, and commercial television. His final chapter presents a model for audiovisual analysis of film. Walter Murch, who contributes the foreword, has been hon­ ored by both the British and American Motion Picture Academies for his sound design and picture editing.     CHAPTER Music, Sound, and the Space of Narrative Concepts and Terminology Introduction Under normal circumstances, sound is closely tied to physical space. The basic human cognition of sound is to "anchor" it in an object—a person speaks, a door creaks, a dove coos, the radio plays. Those objects necessarily reside in some physical space (the space of the real world). Narrative complicates mat ters, however. A storyteller speaks and in that sense is the objert-source of that speech, but he or she also conjures up a fantasy world whose own "objects" can be the sources of sound, as when the storyteller attributes dialogue to a character ("Then George said, T don't know what you mean'"). The cinematic narrative complicates things still further because it directs most of the attention to that conjured-up fantasy world, so that the primary ve hicle of narrative is no longer speech but visual representation. In film, the role of a stor)rteller is sometimes taken over by voice-over narration, someone un seen who speaks on the sound track, but there is always an "implied narrator" (because narrative films tell stories, there must be a stor5rtelIer "somewhere"). Therefore, the viewer-listener's cognition of sound is obliged to operate at two levels: the level of the narration (implied or spoken) and the level of sound in the fantasy or screen world. "Background" and "source," respectively, are terms commonly used for sound in these two levels, but as we noted in chapter 1, "background" is too easily confused with the subordinate element in the foreground/background pair.

    OFFSCREEN :: Vol. 11, Nos. 8-9, Aug/Sept 2007 Introduction Sound in the Cinema and Beyond By Randolph Jordan The explosion of academic interest in sound studies over the past decade has ensured that I can no longer begin a special sound-oriented issue of a journal such as this by declaring the topic a “neglected domain.” Serious inquiry dealing with sound from a wealth of disciplinary perspectives has definitively taken place. In many ways, being free of the cachet that comes with obscurity is very appealing; I no longer have to justify my interest in sound, and can comfortably take it for granted that the auditory dimension is now deemed worthy of exploration in its own right. This is a film journal, and my own work is grounded within the discipline of film studies. Yet I am also profoundly interested in the function of interdisciplinarity in contributing to the kinds of work that we do within the confines of disciplinary boundaries. The concept for this issue, entitled Sound in the Cinema and Beyond, is to bring together recent work on sound-related issues that illustrates important points of connection between the study of film and work being done in other areas of the arts.
