SITREP NO-67/2009 32-20/2009-NDM-I Ministry of Home Affairs (Disaster Management Division) Dated, 6th August, 2009 Subject: SOUTHWEST MONSOON-2009: DAILY FLOOD SITUATION REPORT SUMMARY OF IMPORTANT EVENTS AS ON 06.08.2009 RAINFALL/FLOOD SITUATION IN THE COUNTRY BIHAR • Moderate to heavy rainfall has been reported in some parts of the State during last 24 hours. • About 1.68 lakh people in 107 villages are reported to have been affected. • 10156 people have been evacuated so far. • In Sitamari district , a breach in the embankment of river Bagmati near Runi Saidpur has been reported due to which, about 1.00 lakh people , 40 villages in 7-8 Panchayat are reported to have been affected. About 40,000 people in 20 villages are reported to have been badly affected. • 200 people have been accommodated in 02 relief camps. • 06 health centers have also been opened. • 131 Private boats , 18 government boats and 22 NDRF boats have been pressed into service for rescue and relief operations. • 03 NDRF coys continue to be deployed alongwith equipment in the district. ORISSA • Light rainfall has been reported in some parts of the States during last 24 hours. • 19454 livestock have been perished so far. • About 3,84,000 people are reported to have been affected. • 1,26,000 ha cropped area have been affected. • 7127 houses have been damaged. • 62200 people have been evacuated so far. KERALA • Light rainfall has been reported in some parts of the State during last 24 hours. • 175 cattle/livestock have been perished. • About 1220297 people are reported to have been affected. -

BIHAR FLOOD SITUATION REPORT 2nd August, 2009 Current Situation: Parts of Sitamarhi district of Bihar is under the grip Flood Affected District in Bihar of floods with a major breach of 60 meters on the right embankment of Bagmati river near Tajpur village of Runnisyedpur block on 1st August’ 09. The breach which is about 6 km up stream of Kataunjha Road Bridge on National Highway-77 has disrupted the road communication between Muzaffarpur and Sitamarhi near Koati (about 17 km from in Sitamarhi) due to overflowing of flood water. The flood affected villages under Runnisyedpur block are - Tilaktajpur, Maanpur Ratnawali, Rupauli, Raipur , Hardiya, Govind Pithaujiya, Mahesha Phadakpur, Kohahi, Badheta, Bishunpur, Siskhiriya, Neuri, Batrauli, Hazipur Basant, Bishanpur, Korlahiya, Moran, Olipur & Gaus Nagar. Govt Response : Approximately one lakh people are reported to be affected and state govt. has initiated its actions to plug the damaged portion. Principal Secretary, Water Resources Dept., along with senior officials are camping at the site. In addition to it, state govt. has engaged around 90 members of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) team to carry out the relief & rescue operations in the affected areas. 23 nos. of boats have also been mobilized from Kolkotta to expedite the rescue operations. Two relief camps are also reported to shelter the flood victims. In view of the rising water level in major rivers, state government has alerted the district administrations of flood-prone districts. Bagmati river is flowing above danger level at Sonakhan (68.95 m against the danger level of 68.80 m), Dubbadhar (61.2 m against the danger level of 62.60 m), Kansar (59.06 m against the danger level of 60.45 m), and Benibad (48.6 m against the danger level of 49.2 m). -

SITUATION REPORT (13 August 2007) South West Monsoon As per IMD report, yesterday’s monsoon low-pressure area over northwest Bay of Bengal off north Orissa-West Bengal Coast has developed into a well-marked low-pressure area. It is likely to concentrate into a depression during next 24 hours (13th August). Under its influence, widespread rainfall is likely to occur over Orissa and coastal areas of West Bengal during next 48 hours (13th & 14th August). Widespread rainfall is also likely over remaining parts of West Bengal & Sikkim, Jharkhand, Bihar, East Uttar Pradesh and Chhattisgarh during same period. The rainfall activity is likely to increase further over Bihar and East Uttar Pradesh after 48 hours (13th & 14th August). Today Weather Update: Scattered heavy to very heavy falls and isolated extremely heavy falls are likely over Orissa, Jharkhand and Gangetic West Bengal during next 24 hours and isolated heavy to very heavy falls thereafter. Isolated heavy to very heavy falls are likely over Bihar and East Uttar Pradesh during next 24 hrs. and scattered heavy to very heavy falls with isolated extremely heavy falls thereafter. Isolated heavy to very heavy falls are likely over Western Himalayan Region, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal & Sikkim and Chhattisgarh. South West Monsoon
SITUATION REPORT India South West Monsoon The south-west monsoon has been active during June and July across the country. As per IMD reports the low pressure area over northwest Bay of Bengal off Orissa-West Bengal coasts has concentrated into a depression and lay centred near Lat. 20.0°N and long 88.5°E, about 230 km southeast of Balasore. It is likely to intensify further and move in a west-northwesterly direction and cross north Orissa-West Bengal coast between Paradeep and Digha near Chandbali (Orissa) by early hours of tomorrow, the 6th August 2007. Under its influence, widespread rainfall (>25cm) will occur over Orissa during next 48 hours. Widespread rainfall is also likely over north Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Chhattisgarh, Gangetic West Bengal and Jharkhand and subsequently the rain covered clouds will cover states of Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Gujarat and south Rajasthan. The squally winds with speed reaching 45-55 km/hr are likely to blow along and off Orissa and West Bengal coasts. Fishermen are advised not to venture into the sea during the next 24 hours. The flood condition continues to prevail within Ganga - Brahmaputra-Meghna river basin in the states of Assam, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh. 4 rivers are flowing above the high flood levels and 20 rivers are flowing at danger levels with a moderate flooding trend and 17 rivers flow in a low flood trend. In Bihar all the rivers are flowing below danger level except Ganga at Kahalgon. The upper catchment areas of rivers Bagmati, Budhi Gandak, Gandak and Koshi in Nepal and in Bihar (India) continue to flow in a falling trend but still at warning levels. -

SITUATION REPORT (27 August 2007) South West Monsoon The IMD forecast reports indicate that under the influence of an off-shore trough over Bay of Bengal widespread rainfall would occur over east coast during next 3-4 days (27-30 August). Also in association with a north-south trough and an embedded cyclonic circulation over south Madhya Maharashtra and neighbouring areas, widespread rainfall is likely to occur over Madhya Maharashtra, Marathawada (Aurangabad Division), Gujarat Region and Madhya Pradesh during next 48 hours (27-28 August). Also widespread rainfall is likely to occur over northeastern States, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal & Sikkim, Bihar and East Uttar Pradesh during next 3-4 days (27-30 August). With the likelihood of an upper air cyclonic circulation formation rainfall activity is likely to increase over northwest India from 28 onwards for the next 3 days (28-30 August). Today’s Heavy Rainfall Warning: scattered heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely over Konkan & Goa.
