Abstract The French Revolution of 1789 was instrumental in the emergence and growth of modern nationalism, the idea that a state should represent, and serve the interests of, a people, or "nation," that shares a common culture and history and feels as one. But national ideas, often with their source in the otherwise cosmopolitan world of the Enlightenment, were also an important cause of the Revolution itself. The rhetoric and documents of the Revolution demonstrate the importance of national ideas. -

FECTEAU B.A., St. Michael's College, 1951 A THESIS Submitted in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Arts (in History) Division of Graduate Study University of Maine Orono June, 1952 June, 1952 M.A. History THE FRENCH CANADIAN COMMUNITY OF WATERVILLE, MAINE Albert C. Fecteau ABSTRACT In the early 1800's, there was a slow migratory movement from Lower Canada into the United States. The major causes for this flow of immigrants were first: a flourishing Republic adjacent to the Canadian border which offered economic opportunity; second: the existing colonial dissatisfaction or ethnic difficulties between the French Canadians and the British rulers; and third: the dismal economic outlook within Canada. Most of Waterville's early French Canadian immigrants were led to this locality by one or all of these motives. They came a few at a time and some occasionally returned to their Canadian farms or villages. Several developments quickened the migration. The first was the building of the `Kennebec Road' in 1830. Twenty-five years later, the construction of railroads made travel ever easier. Then came the Civil War in 1861 with its many offers of employment. However, it was the building of the cotton mills in 1874 and in 1882 that attracted the greatest number of French Canadian immigrants into Waterville. These people, generally poor and largely illiterate, suffered many hardships. Many of these were common to industrial communities of the Northeastern section of the United States in a period when laisson- faire was the prevailing philosophy. -

Richard Fitzpatrick's South Florida, 1822-1840 Part II: Fitzpatrick's Miami River Plantation By Hugo L. Black III* During the 1820's, most of the land in southeast Florida was owned by the government. By 1825, only six private claims from the Spanish period had been validated: the Polly Lewis, Jonathan Lewis, and Rebecca Hagan (Egan) Donations on the South side of the Miami River, the James Hagan (Egan) Donation on the North side of the Miami River, the Mary Ann Davis Donation on Key Biscayne, and the Frankee Lewis Donation on the New River.1 Notwithstanding the lack of settlement, even during this period, southeast Florida's suitability for plantations was recognized. James Egan emphasized this suitability in the following advertisement run on numerous occasions in the Key West Register during 1829, in which he offered his land on the Miami River for Sale: For Sale A Valuable Tract of LAND Near Cape Florida Situated on the Miami River. The Land is very good and will produce Sugar Cane and Sea Island Cotton, equal if not superior to any other part of the *Hugo Black, III, is a resident of Miami, a former state legislator, a graduate of Yale, and presently attending law school at Stanford University. This is the second part of an article written as a senior paper at Yale. For Part I see Tequesta, XL. 34 TEQUESTA Territory. There is at present a number of bearing Banana and Lime trees and the fruit is inferior to none raised in the Island of Cuba. The forest growth consists principally of Live Oak, Red Bay and Dog Wood. -

THE MAUREEN AND MIKE MANSFIELD FOUNDATION Crafting a Contemporary U.S.-Japan Vision Mansfield Foundation Task Force on U.S.-Japan Shared Progress and Prosperity Presentation and Public Seminar in Sendai – Simultaneous Interpretation Provided Co-organized by: Tohoku University Sponsored by: The Japan Commerce Association of Washington (JCAW), and the Japanese Chamber of Commerce and Industry of New York (JCCI) In spring 2012, Washington D.C. celebrated the hundred year anniversary of the original Japanese gift of cherry trees that now famously decorate the American capital. As the U.S.-Japan relationship marks this ceremonial milestone, the Maureen and Mike Mansfield Foundation, with support from the Japan Commerce Association of Washington (JCAW) and the Japanese Chamber of Commerce and Industry of New York (JCCI), has assembled the Mansfield Foundation Task Force on Crafting a Contemporary U.S.-Japan Vision for Shared Progress and Prosperity. In the fall of 2012, the Mansfield Task Force, comprising nine Americans whose work in the private sector, academia, and government centers on Japan, will publish their vision for the future of the bilateral relationship. A delegation of Task Force members, including former U.S. Ambassador J. Thomas Schieffer, will visit six Japanese cities to share their vision during a two-hour public seminar. The group will articulate their call for updating mutual perceptions of Japan and the United States, increasing human-to-human exchange, coordinating on addressing our similar economic challenges, cooperating on promoting trade as an engine for regional growth and stability, and invigorating the bilateral approach to global issues. Following their remarks Task Force members will be pleased to take questions from the audience. -
