  • The Bloody Mary Is the US's Most Popular Alcoholic Drink for Brunch
The Bloody Mary Is The US’s Most Popular Alcoholic Drink For Brunch (Video) For all those who celebrated more than they should have, National Bloody Mary Day serves up one of the world’s most popular hangover cures on January 1st. According to Food and Drink in American History: “Full Course” Encyclopedia by Andrew F. Smith, the Bloody Mary made its debut in Paris at The Ritz Hotel in 1921. Originally named the Bucket of Blood, it also went by the name Red Snapper. Petiot later left Paris and introduced the vodka, tomato juice, lemon juice, Worcestershire, cayenne, and salty cocktail to the New York King Cole Bar scene when prohibition ended. Some attribute the name to notorious Queen Mary Tudor, who executed hundreds of Protestants in the name of Catholicism during her short five-year reign from 1553 to 1558. Others claim Petiot’s girlfriend of the same name receives the credit. Using a celery stick to garnish a Bloody Mary originated in the 1960s at Chicago’s Ambassador East Hotel. A customer received their Bloody Mary without a swizzle stick. They grabbed a stalk of celery from the relish tray to stir his Bloody Mary and history was made. In the United States, the Bloody Mary is a common hangover remedy. It is thought to cure hangovers due to its combination of a heavy vegetable base (to settle the stomach), salt (to replenish lost electrolytes) and alcohol (to relieve head and body aches). The Bloody Mary is the US’s most popular alcoholic drink for brunch. This drink has been called “The world’s most complex cocktail.” The name Bloody Mary is associated with a number of historical figures; particularly Queen Mary I of England.

“The only THE MARTINI American Mixed Origins invention as There’s no cocktail more distinctly American than perfect as the martini, yet its origin is a murky one. Many historians follow the martini back to the California the sonnet.” Gold Rush. The story goes that a miner walked into — H.L. Mencken a bar in Martinez, California and asked for a drink to celebrate his fortune. The bartender threw together what he had on hand — sweet vermouth, gin, bitters, maraschino liqueur, and a lemon slice — calling it a “Martinez” after the town. The Martinez became a hit, and was published in the Bartender’s Guide in 1887. Yet there are other claims on the cocktails origin. Author and historian Barnaby Conrad III, asserts that The Occidental Hotel in San Francisco is its true birthplace. Another story claims a New York bartender invented it at The Knickerbocker Hotel in 1911. Then there’s also the claim from an Italian vermouth maker, Martini, which started marketing its product under the same name in 1863. Although its origin is a mystery, the Martini is an American icon. Taking Form During Prohibition easy access to gin led to the Martini’s popularity, and its most recognizable form. By 1922, preparing a Martini consisted of London dry gin and dry vermouth combined at a ratio of 2:1, stirred in a mixing glass with ice cubes, and the optional addition of orange or aromatic bitters, then strained into a chilled cocktail glass. Shaken, not Stirred No real or fictional character has done more for the classic martini than James Bond, making famous the line, “Shaken, not stirred”.

  • Italy's Most Popular Aperitivi
Italy’s Most Popular Aperitivi | Epicurean Traveler https://epicurean-traveler.com/?p=96178&preview=true U a Italy’s Most Popular Aperitivi by Lucy Gordan | Wine & Spirits Italy is world famous for its varied regional landscapes, history, food and accompanying wines. However, if you go straight out to dinner, you’ll be missing out on a quintessential tradition of la bella vita, because, when they have time, self-respecting Italians, especially in the north and in big cities, start their evening with an aperitivo or pre-diner drink. An aperitivo is not “Happy Hour” or an excuse to drink to oblivion. Italians blame many ailments on their livers so the aperitivo has digestive purposes. It allows Italians to relax, unwind and socialize after work. It also starts their digestive metabolism and gets the juices flowing with a light, dry or bitter tonic with a “bite” to work up their appetite before dinner. This so-called “bitter bite” is beloved to Italians who prefer it and the overly sweet to sour. It took me several years to get used to bitter, much less like it. The oldest aperitivo is vermouth, an aromatic fortified wine created in Turin, where the aperitivo tradition is still strongest today. As www.selectitaly.com tells us: “ One of the oldest vermouths dates back to 1757 when two herbalist brothers, Giovanni Giacomo and Carlo Stefano Cinzano created vermouth rosso, initially marketed as a medicinal tonic.” This explains the bitter quality of many Italian drinks even non-alcoholic ones like chinotto or crodino. The Cinzano brothers flavored their vermouth, (its name derived from the German wormwood), with Wermut, its main ingredient, and with over 30 aromatic plants from the nearby Alps: herbs, barks, and roots such as juniper, gentian and coriander.
