Using a novel dataset of roll-call votes in the current EP-term, we identify critical members whose votes are necessary to form winning coalitions. We found that committee members with formal positions, EP group coordinators as well as German, French, Italian and British members are powerful actors. Nevertheless, rapporteurs are not necessarily influential. We also concluded that members with moderate ideological position but from Member States with extreme agricultural importance are the most powerful ones. In 2013, a small group of German green and left- wing activists, professional campaign NGOs and well-established protectionist organisations set up deceptive communication campaigns against TTIP, the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership between the European Union and the United States. Germany’s anti-TTIP NGOs explicitly aimed to take German-centred protests to other European countries. Their reasoning is contradictory and logically inconsistent. Their messages are targeted to serve common sense protectionist demands of generally ill-informed citizens and politicians. Thereby, anti-TTIP communication is based on metaphoric messages and far-fetched myths to effectively evoke citizens’ emotions. Together, these groups dominated over 90 percent of online media reporting on TTIP in Germany. Anti-TTIP protest groups in Germany are not only inventive; they are also resourceful. Based on generous public funding and opaque private donations, green and left-wing political parties, political foundations, clerical and environmental groups, and well-established anti-globalisation organisations maintain influential campaign networks. Protest groups’ activities are coordinated by a number of former and current green and left-wing politicians and political parties that search for anti-establishment political profiles. As Wallon blockage mentality regarding CETA, the trade and investment agreement between the European Union and Canada, demonstrates, Germany’s anti-TTIP groups’ attempts to undermine EU trade policy bear the risk of coming to fruition in other Eurpean countries.

    Members of the European Parliament’s Intergroup on LGBTI Rights Intergroup on Children’s Rights To: Helena Dalli, European Commissioner for Equality Brussels, 20 March 2020 Subject: Protection of rainbow families and their children as regards their freedom of movement Honorable Commissioner, Freedom of movement is a fundamental right and needs to be guaranteed for all EU citizens, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity. Especially children in rainbow families must be fully protected from a situation of legal uncertainty and emotional limbo created by the interpretation and application of uneven rules across the European Union. EU citizens and their family members have the right to move freely and live in another EU country1. This very same right is appallingly denied to rainbow families and their children in some member states, where national and local authorities refuse to recognise their family status – as this has already legally been established in another EU Member State – and deprive them of their fundamental rights which they derive from EU law. This legal patchwork creates a situation in which same-sex spouses and their children are less protected than different-sex spouses regarding parental rights, the citizenship of their children, tax credits, access to health care, parental leave and inheritance. Differences in legal gender recognition also negatively impact on trans parents moving to Member States without similar mechanisms, resulting in difficulties or impossibility to recognise their parenthood. In some cases, these parents and their children receive no protection and their families are not even recognised to exist. We believe that every family should continue to exist when crossing EU borders.

    EU Commissioner for Home Affairs Ylva Johansson Brussels, 30 October 2020 Dear Commissioner Johansson, It has been nearly two months since the fire in Moria left more than 12,000 persons destitute and the response from Greece, the EU and member states has been pitiful. Whilst responding to urgent needs warranted setting up a temporary camp on Lesvos, we now risk seeing this temporary solution turning into a permanent one. But, based on the account of refugees themselves and experienced service providers, the conditions in the new camp are worse than the conditions in Moria. Almost 8,000 people – mostly families with children – have been forced to live in tents and face dire living conditions. Rapid protection assessments1 carried out at the end of September identified numerous risks to the people living in the camp. These include limited access to food with reports of residents fainting out of hunger, inadequate measures against Covid-19 as well as no drainage nor sewerage system on site, with only one toilet being shared by twenty people and no access for persons with physical disabilities. Due to a lack of running water, residents are forced to wash themselves in the sea – this raises a risk to children who could drown. This lack of sanitary facilities coupled with the insufficient lighting exposes women to an increased risk of sexual and gender-based violence. Residents are unable to access health services or legal aid. Children have no access to education and truly risk becoming a lost generation. We are increasingly concerned that the camp, located by the beach, will not withstand the against adverse weather conditions, such as strong wind and rain.

    European Parliamentary Forum for Sexual & Reproductive Rights (EPF) Rue Montoyer 23 1000 Brussels Belgium 09 September 2020 Dear President Zuzana Čaputová, dear President of the Slovak Parliament Boris Kollár, As Members of Parliaments from across political parties, we wish to express our deep concern about recent attempts of the Slovakian Parliament to tighten the current abortion law. Abortion is a time-sensitive matter, women, therefore, need timely and safe access to information and services. The National Council document, number 154, by prolonging the waiting period, stands in the direct opposition with good medical practice, international human rights, and WHO recommendations.1 Additionally, it infringes upon the Council of Europe’s Human Rights Commissioner’s obligations for the Member States to ensure access to abortion care and specifies that any refusal of care on grounds of religion or belief by a medical professional may never be allowed to jeopardise women’s right to access sexual and reproductive health services2. The law would harm women’s equality, dignity, autonomy, and bodily integrity, restricting their access to information and their rights to private life and health. These are challenging and uncertain times for all of us in Europe where we as elected politicians must ask our electorate to make difficult and unprecedented sacrifices for the common good. In return, our electorate expects us as politicians to live up to our responsibilities to safeguard their rights and well-being. This includes recognising that sexual and reproductive health and rights, including access to abortion, constitute essential health services and that current governments have a responsibility to protect and thereby ensure women’s continued access to this essential health intervention.
