Krikalev and Phillips will spend several weeks in Star City, near Moscow, for debriefing and medical examinations. They launched from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan last April 14. During their increment they performed a spacewalk, continued station maintenance and did scientific experiments. While aboard the station, Krikalev became the world's most experienced spacefarer. 2008 International Space Development Conference Demonstrates Spirit of Cooperation in Face of Imminent Change Announcements on New Programs, Market Studies, and Space Research Mark the 'New Pace of Space' FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Washington D.C. - (June 4, 2008) - The National Space Society's (NSS) 27th Annual International Space Development Conference (ISDC) brought together leaders and supporters of the civil space program and the emerging commercial space sector last week to discuss the state of the industry and inform the general public of future space efforts. ISDC, produced and hosted by the National Space Society, is a global forum for anyone with an interest in space to learn, interact, and discuss the future with the leaders of space exploration, business, and science. The four-day conference, held in a different city each year, has become known as a leading nexus between NASA programs and the emerging commercial space industry. On Wednesday May 28, 2008 the conference kicked off with an exclusive pre-conference event, the 4th Space Investment Summit (SIS), which brought together the emerging commercial space industry with the established world of finance to exchange their goals, ideas, and advice. Investors and established aerospace firms heard business plans from some of the most exciting new companies in space-related business sectors, while expert panels discussed important issues like exit strategies for aerospace startups, as well as early and mid-stage financing. Will Whitehorn, President of Sir Richard Branson's private space tourism company Virgin Galactic, keynoted the opening session of ISDC with a positive report on the developmental progress of WhiteKnightTwo and SpaceShipTwo. -

NASA’s Centennial Challenges seek to accelerate innovation in aerospace technology development through public competitions. The 3D-Printed Habitat Challenge, launched in 2015, is part of the Centennial Challenges portfolio and focuses on habitat design and development of large-scale additive construction systems capable of fabricating structures from in situ materials and/or mission recyclables. The challenge is a partnership between NASA, Caterpillar (primary sponsor), Bechtel, Brick and Mortar Ventures, and Bradley University. Phase I of the challenge was an architectural concept competition in which participants generated conceptual renderings of habitats on Mars which could be constructed using locally available resources. Phase II asked teams to develop the printing systems and material formulations needed to translate these designs into reality. Work under the phase II competition, which concluded in August 2017 with a head to head competition at Caterpillar’s Edward Demonstration Facility in Peoria, Illinois, is discussed, including the key technology development outcomes resulting from this portion of the competition. The phase III competition consists of both virtual and construction subcompetitions. Virtual construction asks teams to render high fidelity architectural models of a habitat and all the accompanying information required for construction of the pressure retaining and load bearing portions of the structure. -

Engineering Lesson Plan: Russian Rocket Ships! Sputnik, Vostok, Voskhod, and Soyuz Launcher Schematics Uttering the text “rocket ship” can excite, mystify, and inspire young children. A rocket ship can transport people and cargo to places far away with awe-inspiring speed and accuracy. The text “rocket scientist” indexes a highly intelligent and admirable person, someone who is able to create, or assist in the creation of machines, vehicles that can actually leave the world we all call “home.” Rocket scientists possess the knowledge to take human beings and fantastic machines to space. This knowledge is built upon basic scientific principles of motion and form—the understanding, for young learners, of shapes and their function. This lesson uses the shape of a rocket to ignite engineering knowledge and hopefully, inspiration in young pupils and introduces them to a space program on the other side of the world. Did you know that the first person in space, Yuri Gagarin, was from the former Soviet Union? That the Soviet Union (now Russia) sent the first spacecraft, Sputnik I, into Earth’s orbit? That today, American NASA-based astronauts fly to Russia to launch and must learn conversational Russian as part of their training? Now, in 2020, there are Russians and Americans working together in the International Space Station (ISS), the latest brought there by an American-based commercial craft. Being familiar with the contributions Russia (and the former Soviet Union) has made to space travel is an integral part of understanding the ongoing human endeavor to explore the space all around us. After all, Russian cosmonauts use rocket ships too! The following lesson plan is intended for kindergarten students in Indiana to fulfill state engineering learning requirements. -

Weibel Departments of Anthropology and Integrative, Religious, and Intercultural Studies, Grand Valley State University, Allendale, MI 49401, USA; [email protected] Received: 29 November 2019; Accepted: 28 December 2019; Published: 2 January 2020 Abstract: Human spaceflight is likely to change in character over the 21st century, shifting from a military/governmental enterprise to one that is more firmly tied to private industry, including businesses devoted to space tourism. For space tourism to become a reality, however, many obstacles have to be overcome, particularly those in finance, technology, and medicine. Ethnographic interviews with astronauts, engineers, NASA doctors, and NewSpace workers reveal that absolute faith in the eventual human occupation of space, based in religious conviction or taking secular forms, is a common source of motivation across different populations working to promote human spaceflight. This paper examines the way faith is expressed in these different contexts and its role in developing a future where space tourism may become commonplace. Introduction Space tourism is an endeavor, similar to but distinctly different from other forms of space travel, that relies on its participants’ and brokers’ faith that carrying out brave expeditions, modeled on and inspired by those in the past, will ultimately pay off in a better future for humankind. Faith, in this case, refers to a subjective sense that a particular future is guaranteed and may or may not have religious foundations. This faith appears to be heightened by the collective work undertaken by groups endeavoring to send humans into space, creating a sense of what anthropologists Victor and Edith Turner have described as communitas, a shared feeling of equality and common purpose. -
