Jiu Jistu Basics You Are Going to Need Jiu Jistu Basics Some things to remember when you are rst starting: -It is going to be hard. Really hard. -You are confused? That is ok. There are many pieces to jiu jitsu and it will take time for them to all come together. -TAP. Both respect it and use it. When someone taps, immediately let go. When you feel you are in a bad position, or even if you have a tiny bit of doubt, just tap and start again. -You’re probably going to get someone’s hair and/or sweat in your mouth. General Rules: -No grabbing, bending, attacking individual ngers. Just don’t. -No striking, punching or kicking. -No eye gouging or shhooks. -No picking people up and slamming them to the ground. -You can’t grab the inside of the sleeve or pant cu. You can grab inside the top of the pants though. Weird huh? You are going to need: -A gi. You can get a jiu jitsu gi online or at Dojo Outtters here in Portland. You will need a jiu jitsu gi, not a karate gi. They’re thicker and can withstand all the gripping and pulling. -A white belt. This signies your rank and keeps your top closed. -A water bottle. You’re going to get tired and thirsty during practice. We have a water cooler behind the front door where you came in. -A mouth guard. This is optional, but it will be helpful. Though there is no striking in jiu jitsu, it is a combat sport. Wearing a mouth guard is a good idea. -An open mind. Jiu jitsu is weird and complex, it will be very confusing at rst. Keep coming to practice regularly with an open mind and it will all start coming together. -A notebook to take notes in. You won’t be able to take notes during class probably, but you can and should take notes of what you learned directly after. This will help solidify the techniques that were shown in class. -A friend. It is always more fun to learn something new with a friend. Find someone to come to class with you and now instead of going to the bar all the time, you guys can do jiu jitsu. Basic Positions In jiu jitsu you are either the “top player” or you are the bottom “guard player.” The Guard: there are many guards, but basically this means that you are on the bottom and using your legs to attack and keep your opponent away. In tournament jiu jitsu you can win by submission i.e. “tapping out” you opponent. You can also win by points. i.e. you get 4 points for getting into top mount, and you get 2 points for passing the guard. What does this mean? This has 2 meanings. First, you will want to have a good position before working for the submission. Meaning if you’re in mount bottom, that’s a position bad position, you should be looking to escape rather than trying to choke or submit from there. Second, having a good position and holding it can be just as valuable as getting a submission. In a tournament you’ll get points for good positions, but having a dominant position during the majority of a round in practice can also be considered a win. Holding a good submission position can be just as punishing and sometimes worse than any sub. Be a T-Rex. Keep your elbows in. This makes your arms stronger and also less vulnerable to attacks. -Keep your posture. Don’t bend over at the waist like an old person. This will make it easy to break you down and attack you. -Remember to defend. Protect your neck at all times. -Stay calm and try not to muscle or spaz out. While bench pressing that guy o of you and ailing your limbs wildly might seem eective, it is not eective as an escape or as a way to learn. -Don’t worry about doing something wrong or about looking silly. You will do it wrong, you don’t know anything yet. And plus, we all look really silly. If you’re in a new scenario and you don’t know what to do, its ok. Just try to nd a solution that might work. It probably won’t, but that’s part of learning. Just remember the rule above; it’s ok to do things wrong or try something that you don’t even know is a move or not, just don’t spaz out and wildly hit your partner in the face. If you don’t know what to do, trying to choke your partner with all of your strength while kicking your legs from a weird position is usually not the answer.

Gen. Robert S. Beightler Armory in Columbus. With over 65 competitors participating in the double-elimination tournament, champions were crowned in six weight divisions. The competition tested the hand-to-hand combat techniques taught and practiced through the Modern Army Combatives Program (MACP), which trains Soldiers how to protect themselves in close quarters battle against threats using a nonlethal response and without firearms. The MACP draws from martial arts and combat sports including wrestling, Brazilian jiu-jitsu, judo, sambo, Muay Thai, and boxing. Following a full morning and early afternoon of preliminary and semifinal matches, the mid- afternoon championship bouts determined the best in each division. The top three placers in each weight division earned gold, silver, and bronze medals, respectively, with each champion getting a title belt that they retain until next year’s competition.     Origins of Wrestling Wrestling is probably the oldest of all sports and has been depicted in cave paintings dating back 15,000 years. It was a sport practiced in many ancient societies. The first wrestling matches were likely part of military training. The Ancient Greeks were the most prolific wrestlers, and they elevated it to a physical art form. They realized that wrestling is like playing chess with your body, utilizing techniques and moves to outwit your opponent and, in the process, dominate him. The Greeks also created the Olympic Games, and wrestling was one of only a few events featured in the very first Games in the eighth century B.C. Later, with the fall of the Greek Empire in the fifth century A.D., the Olympic Games ceased, and the sport became less of an art form (reverting to its more militaristic beginnings). In time, both styles spread to the Roman Empire and beyond. When the Olympics resumed in 1896, one of the first sports offered was wrestling. 1904 Olympic Wrestling Match Wrestling in the Americas Many Native American tribes practiced wrestling, but little is known about their distinct styles, which are likely to have varied from tribe to tribe. While the styles may have been different, the goal was the same -- to become skilled warriors. During the 1700’s, wrestling graduated from a form of combat into a genuine spectator sport. It was the major contact sport among men of all classes in America. The wrestling style of the day was collar and elbow, named for the starting position.

For example, in the Harivamsha Purana there are famous bouts between Lord Krishna and his brother Balarama and wrestlers Chanura and Mushtika. If one reads the Purana one can see how fists and knees were used by the wrestlers during the bouts.

Minor differences are made to accommodate some specifics, but IJF rules are predominant to any specific rules. Referee calls the competitors inside the mat. Fighters will enter the match area at the same time. The fighters will move towards the center of the fighting area and kneel down at a two meter distance. The fighters will then bow in that position. The fighters will then move to an up on one knee high kneeling stance at one metre distance. The fighter in white is at the right side of the Referee. • If the athletes go outside the fighting area without applying a technique with apparent success, the referee should stop the match and restart the two athletes in a high-knee position at the centre of the fighting area. • At the end of the match, the referee announces the winner and the fighters bow to each other (while on their knees) at a two metres distance. Depending on the number of competitors participating in a division, it is possible that a single loss could eliminate a competitor’s opportunity to compete further in their division. Bracketing When bracketing, it sometimes becomes necessary to collapse divisions. When doing so, the safety and fairness of the competitors is paramount. The general rule of thumb when collapsing is one of the following: • Mix genders (4-11 years old only) • Move up in Age (no more than 2 years) • Move up in Weight (10 lbs / 4.5 kg or less) • Move up in Rank (only 1 rank, 4-15 years old only) Aside from collapsing the genders, it is uncommon to do more than one of the two options listed above. There are exceptions to this rule. Example: 9-year-old boy that weighs 64 lbs can be moved to the 10-11 year-old division against a 10-year-old girl that weighs 67 lbs.
