The image of the home as fortressand a juxtapositionof the domestic with menace and terrorwere central to British media representationsof colonial wars in Malaya and Kenya in the 1950s. The repertoireof imagerydeployed in the Daily Mail for the "miniaturefortress" in Malayawas extendedto Kenya,where the news- papernoted wire over domesticwindows, guns beside wine glasses, the charminghostess in her black silk dress with "an automaticpistol hang- ing at her hip." Such images of English domesticitythreatened by an alien other were also centralto immigrationdiscourse in the 1950s and 1960s. In the context of the decline of British colonial rule after 1945, representationsof the empireand its legacy-resistance to colonial rule in empireand "immigrants"in the metropolis-increasingly converged on a common theme: the violation of domestic sanctuaries. All rights reserved.0021-9371/2001/4004-0005$02.00 557 558 WEBSTER has been widely recognized.2 As Chris Waters has suggested in his work on discourses of race and nation between 1947 and 1963, these years saw questions of race become central to questions of national belonging. Waters explores the race relations literature of this period to review the ways in which the idea of a "little England" was used against a black migrant "other."3 The myth of "little England," as he notes, can be traced back to the Edwardian period, when it was often used as an anti- imperial image. It was in the context of anxieties about national weak- ness, provoked by the Anglo-Boer war (1899-1902), that G. K. Chester- ton, in a symposium of papers by the Patriots' Club, advocated a return to "our ancient interest in England" as opposed to "our quite moder and quite frivolous interest in everywhere else," in tracing the "error in our recent South African politics."4 As Alison Light's work has shown, the imagery of "little England" was developed in the interwar period, when national identity was increasingly domesticated, emphasiz- ing hearth, home, and herbaceous border.5 After 1945, Waters argues, this version of nation was reworked against the migrant other-"an other perceived as a 'stranger' to those customs and conventions taken to be at the heart of Britishness itself."6 Bill Schwarz's work also explores what he calls a "re-racialization" of England in the late 1950s and early 1960s, but his focus is on the impact of decolonization on the metropolis and, in reviewing the history of white settler communities in empire, he is concerned to trace a range of connections between empire and "home."7 One connection is what he describes as "a battle between two irreconcilable Englands," exem- plified most starkly by Ian Smith's unilateral declaration of independence 2 See esp. But another is the convergence of the language of white settler communities in empire and white opponents of black immigration in the metropolis, as both identified themselves as belea- guered, vulnerable, and embattled: "With immigration, the colonial fron- tier came 'home.' When this happened, the language of the colonies was reworked and came with it ... two inter-related sentiments slowly co- hered, unevenly and partially. First, whites were coming to imagine themselves as historic victims; and second-commensurably-blacks were believed to be acquiring a status of supremacy."8 While literatures on national identity have focused on questions of race, literatures on gender and sexuality have noted the pervasive anxi- eties about white masculinity in this period. Such anxieties manifested themselves in various forms. A preoccupation with the new "home- centered" working-class man expressed concern that he was becoming apolitical, with declining participation in public life of all kinds, whether in trade unions or public houses. The intense homophobia of the 1950s saw a rash of criminal prosecutions of gay men, some of them exten- sively publicized. A key anxiety about black migrants in Britain con- cerned "miscegenation"-a notion that was highly gendered, focusing on fears that black men were stealing "our women."9 Work on cultural representations of gender in film and drama has analyzed the ways in which such anxieties were addressed through a misogynistic discourse that showed white women emasculating men.?1 However, the connections between such anxieties and national identity have rarely been explored.1 The notion that loss of imperial power had any impact on the me- tropolis has generally gone unrecognized, with the conventional histori- ography of decolonization presenting-in Bill Schwarz's memorable phrase-"a stunning lack of curiosity" in this area.12If Gayatri Spivak's 8 Schwarz, "'The Only White Man in There,'" p. 73. 9Lynn Segal, "Look Back in Anger: Men in the Fifties," in Male Order: Un- wrappingMasculinity, ed. However, the bond of popularity may help account for the fact that Ayckbourn's work experience illuminates Shakespeare's practice. Here is Ayckbourn writing about the composition of his trilogy, The Norman Conquests: I was aware that it would be optimistic to expect an audience ... to give up three nights of their precious holiday to come to our one theatre ... The plays would therefore have to be able to stand independently ... Second ... it should be possible to see them in any order. Third, since we could only afford six actors, they should have that number of characters. Fourth, ideally they should have only two stage entrances since that's the way our temporary Library Theatre set-up is arranged (but then this is common to all my plays). There were other minor pre-conditions peculiar to this venture. The actor I had in mind to play Norman couldn't join us for the first few days of the season-which necessitated him making a late first entrance in one of the plays (Table Manners) to facilitate rehearsals. If this all makes me sound like a writer who performs to order, I suppose it's true. I thrive when working under a series of pre-conditions, preferably when they are pre-eonditions over which I have total control.l Ayckbourn manages the small theatre-in-the-round in the resort town of Scarborough where he premieres his work, and consequently has his poten­ tial audience and financial stringencies in mind as he creates.

    CARIBBEAN THEATRE: A POST­COLONIAL STORY Edward Baugh I am going to speak about Caribbean theatre and drama in English, which are also called West Indian theatre and West Indian drama. The story is one of how theatre in the English‐speaking Caribbean developed out of a colonial situation, to cater more and more relevantly to native Caribbean society, and how that change of focus inevitably brought with it the writing of plays that address Caribbean concerns, and do that so well that they can command admiring attention from audiences outside the Caribbean. I shall begin by taking up Ms [Chihoko] Matsuda’s suggestion that I say something about my own involvement in theatre, which happened a long time ago. It occurs to me now that my story may help to illustrate how Caribbean theatre has changed over the years and, in the process, involved the emergence of Caribbean drama. Theatre was my hobby from early, and I was actively involved in it from the mid‐Nineteen Fifties until the early Nineteen Seventies. It was never likely to be more than a hobby. There has never been a professional theatre in the Caribbean, from which one could make a living, so the thought never entered my mind. And when I stopped being actively involved in theatre, forty years ago, it was because the demands of my job, coinciding with the demands of raising a family, severely curtailed the time I had for stage work, especially for rehearsals. When I was actively involved in theatre, it was mainly as an actor, although I also did some Baugh playing Polonius in Hamlet (1967) ― 3 ― directing.

    EARL CAMERON Sapphire Reuniting Cameron with director Basil Dearden after Pool of London, and hastened into production following the Notting Hill riots of summer 1958, Sapphire continued Dearden and producer Michael Relph’s valuable run of ‘social problem’ pictures, this time using a murder-mystery plot as a vehicle to sharply probe contemporary attitudes to race. Cameron’s role here is relatively small, but, playing the brother of the biracial murder victim of the title, the actor makes his mark in a couple of memorable scenes. Like Dearden’s later Victim (1961), Sapphire was scripted by the undervalued Janet Green. Alex Ramon, bfi.org.uk Sapphire is a graphic portrayal of ethnic tensions in 1950s London, much more widespread and malign than was represented in Dearden’s Pool of London (1951), eight years earlier. The film presents a multifaceted and frequently surprising portrait that involves not just ‘the usual suspects’, but is able to reveal underlying insecurities and fears of ordinary people. Sapphire is also notable for showing a successful, middle-class black community – unusual even in today’s British films. Dearden deftly manipulates tension with the drip-drip of revelations about the murdered girl’s life. Sapphire is at first assumed to be white, so the appearance of her black brother Dr Robbins (Earl Cameron) is genuinely astonishing, provoking involuntary reactions from those he meets, and ultimately exposing the real killer. Small incidents of civility and kindness, such as that by a small child on a scooter to Dr Robbins, add light to a very dark film. Earl Cameron reprises a role for which he was famous, of the decent and dignified black man, well aware of the burden of his colour.

  • British Cinema of the 1950S: a Celebration
    A Tale of Two Cities and the Cold War robert giddings There was probably never a book by a great humorist, and an artist so prolific in the conception of character, with so little humour and so few rememberable figures. Its merits lie elsewhere. (John Forster, The Life of Charles Dickens (1872)) R T’ A Tale of Two Cities of 1958 occupies a secure if modest place among that bunch of 1950s British releases based on novels by Dickens, including Brian Desmond Hurst’s Scrooge (1951) and Noel Langley’s The Pickwick Papers (1952).1 When all the arguments about successfully filming Dickens are considered it must be conceded that his fiction offers significant qualities that appeal to film-makers: strong and contrasting characters, fascinating plots and frequent confrontations and collisions of personality. In unsuspected ways, Ralph Thomas’s film is indeed one of the best film versions of a Dickens novel and part of this rests upon the fact that, as Dickens’s novels go, A Tale of Two Cities is unusual. Dickens elaborately works up material in this novel which must have been marinating in his imagination. Two themes stand out: the dual personality, the doppelgänger or alter ego; and mob behaviour when public order collapses. Several strands come together. Dickens had voluminously researched the Gordon Riots which were, up to then, the worst public riots in British history.
