2019-20 Competition

The Oakland Youth sponsors a Concerto Competition for members in good standing. The competition will take place on Saturday, November 30, 2019, 12:30-3:30 PM at The Crowden School (1475 Rose St, Berkeley, CA 94702). Winners will receive potential performance opportunities.

Register by completing the bottom portion of this form and returning to the Oakland Symphony Youth Orchestra office by 5pm on Tuesday, November 19, 2019 along with a deposit check for $25 (payable to OSYO). The deposit will be refunded at the concerto competition. The deposit will be cashed if the musician fails to show up to his/her competition. Each musician will be assigned a specific audition time.

Applications received after 5pm on November 19 will not be honored. No exceptions.

Eligibility To be eligible to participate in the concerto competition you must be a member in good standing. Members must be in compliance with all Oakland Symphony Youth Orchestra policies. The entry must be approved by student’s private teacher and the Oakland Symphony Youth Orchestra conductor.

Repertoire One or multiple movements from any standard work for solo instrument and orchestra (concerti, concert pieces, etc) with orchestra parts readily available. Please check that parts are easily purchased or rented. Concerti performed by youth orchestra during the past 2 years may be rejected. All entries must be approved by the Artistic or Music Director in writing on this form or via email attached.

Preparation Contestants may prepare a single movement or a complete work. It is strongly recommended, but not required, that the winner's concert performance be played from memory. Sometimes using music colors the effectiveness of the audition and could have an impact upon the judges' impression of preparedness. Judges will take memorization into consideration when making their decision.

Performance Audition times will be between 5 and 30 minutes, depending on the length of your piece. The judges have the right to stop the contestant at any time and ask for other sections of a given work. Contestants must supply their own accompanist. In the case of lengthy introductions (Mozart concerti, for example), please limit the introduction to eight bars and please abbreviate orchestra tutti sections. Winners The judges may select a first, second, and third place winner. In the event that no performer is considered at a standard for performance, the judges reserve the right to select no winners. The Oakland Symphony Youth Orchestra also reserves the right to determine which, if any, winners will be accorded a performance with the orchestra.
