  • Romanian Art Society - a Landmark of the Autochthonous Aesthetics in 1918
I N T E R N A T I O NA L CO N F E R E N C E RCIC’18 Redefining Community in Intercultural Context Bucharest, 17-19 May 2018 ROMANIAN ART SOCIETY - A LANDMARK OF THE AUTOCHTHONOUS AESTHETICS IN 1918 Cristina GELAN Music, Theater and Visual Arts Faculty, “Ovidius” University, Constanţa, Romania Abstract: On March 9, 1918, the Romanian Art Society was founded in Bucharest. This was an organization that appeared as a form of protest at the proposal of an authorized artistic force of the time, the Artistic Youth Society, addressed to the artists who were mobilized by the Great General Headquarters of the Romanian Army in Iasi to participate in the great exhibition that they organized in April 1918. Revolted by the academic-romantic-idyllic spirit, reflected in the works of the representatives of the Artistic Youth Society, out at the issues of daily life, artists such as Ştefan Dimitrescu, Camil Ressu, Nicolae Tonitza, I. Ştefănescu, Ion Theodorescu- Sion, Nicolae Dărăscu, Alexis Macedonski, Ionescu Doru, Oscar Han and Traian Cornescu wanted to create an artistic bastion that would provide them with a framework where their aspirations can be revealed and offer them the legitimacy to seek a line of expansion and deepening of the ways of expression specific to Romanian art. During the period 1918 - 1924, the Romanian Art Society became the main attraction of the ideals of the artists who were mobilized on the front of the First World War and who contributed to the realization of works of art, of a high artistic level, grounded in the surrounding reality.

The exhibition illustrates the evolution of Transylvanian painting between the 18th and the 19th centuries and Romanian art from the first half of the19th century through to post-war years. Alongside the masterpieces of the Romanian art masters, the exhibition also includes the artworks of the artists active in Braşov, from the Saxon patriciate portraits to the contemporary artist’s creations. The Portrait of Joseph von Drauth (1709-1762), senator of the city of Braşov, painted by Johann Ölhan the Elder (?-1763), opens the exhibition. [ST] The painting is typical for Saxon patriciate portraiture, a provincial variant of portrait d`apparat. The artist insists on the details which indicate that the commissioner boasted a high social status (coat of arms, apparel, as well as on the objects which suggest the official duties he exercised. The City Hall and the buildings surrounding it, depicted in the background of the portrait, are also meant to illustrate his position. But the posture of the model is conventional and artificial. We find the same interest in underlining the social position of the model in the creation of an anonymous artist active in the late 1700s, who painted the Portrait of Oprea Ţârcă, the head of the shepherds’guild of Săcele.

  • Narratives Crossing Borders: the Dynamics of Cultural Interaction
Between Zurich and Romania: A Dada Exchange Amelia Miholca Arizona State University Jewish-Romanian Identity Why has the Jewish-Romanian identity of the Dadaists Tristan Tzara, Marcel Janco, and Arthur Segal been overlooked or crit- ically unexamined in art historical discourse? Until recently, this significant and complicated identity warranted a brief mention in biographical and Dada studies, such as in those of Robert Motherwell (1951), George Hugnet (1971) Harry Seiwert (1996) and François Buot (2002), which gave prominence to the three Dadaists’ ties to Switzerland, France, Germany. Romania, their country of birth, was mentioned briefly to indicate the interna- tional character of the Dada movement in Zurich, for besides the Romanians, the Dada group comprised of artists from Germany, Russia, Sweden, and France, among them, the main contributors Hugo Ball, Emmy Hennings, Richard Huelsenbeck, Hans Richter, Hans Arp, and Sophie Taeuber-Arp. Their country of origin was also used in the description of Zurich and its international, intel- lectual scene during the war. Their Jewish upbringing and reli- gious and cultural affiliation are even less acknowledged. Tom Sandqvist’s book Dada East from 2006 is the most comprehensive study of the Jewish-Romanian aspect of Dada. Sandqvist traces the Jewish and Romanian sources that he claims influenced Dada performances. My analysis builds on Sandqvist’s claims, but rather than presenting a coherent line of influence be- tween the artistic practices of Tzara, Janco, and Segal, and their shared Romania and Jewish background, as Sandqvist attempts How to cite this book chapter: Miholca, A. 2021. • Changing Identities at the Fringes of the Late Ottoman Empire: the Muslims of Dobruca, 1839-1914
Changing Identities at the Fringes of the Late Ottoman Empire: The Muslims of Dobruca, 1839-1914 DISSERTATION Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Catalina Hunt, Ph.D. Graduate Program in History The Ohio State University 2015 Dissertation Committee: Carter V. Findley, Advisor Jane Hathaway Theodora Dragostinova Scott Levi Copyright by Catalina Hunt 2015 Abstract This dissertation examines the Muslim community of Dobruca, an Ottoman territory granted to Romania in 1878, and its transformation from a majority under Ottoman rule into a minority under Romanian administration. It focuses in particular on the collective identity of this community and how it changed from the start of the Ottoman reform era (Tanzimat) in 1839 to the outbreak of World War I in 1914. This dissertation constitutes, in fact, the study of the transition from Ottoman subjecthood to Romanian citizenship as experienced by the Muslim community of Dobruca. It constitutes an assessment of long-term patterns of collective identity formation and development in both imperial and post-imperial settings. The main argument of the dissertation is that during this period three crucial factors altered the sense of collective belonging of Dobrucan Muslims: a) state policies; b) the reaction of the Muslims to these policies; and c) the influence of transnational networks from the wider Turkic world on the Muslim community as a whole. Taken together, all these factors contributed fully to the community’s intellectual development and overall modernization, especially since they brought about new patterns of identification and belonging among Muslims.

A expus la New York, Berlin, Veneţia, Viena, Varşo- via, Moscova.

Iosif Iser Abstract: Iosif Iser (1881–1958), born in Bucharest, of Jewish origin, was an adept of Expressionism and Cubism due to which, profoundly marked by the artistic Parisian atmosphere, he generated important changes within Romanian art, the topics he approached being inspired by events of his time, places he lived in, people he met, but also by the emotions he felt concerning all these. He signed his works with several pseudonyms, among which even “Rembrandt”. Iser’s artistic tract crossed various distinctive periods when his own vision was tuned to that of renewing trends in universal art that offered the artist those elements resonating with his own personality. The landscape and characters coming from the places he visited (either from the Romanian realities, or from travels to Spain, France or the Orient), acquired, in his interpretation, a strong personal mark by the exaggeration of the refined essence of the visual information, that he incorporates in a solid architecture of volumes, creating thus a specific atmosphere in a widely rhythmed space. Iosif Iser’s artistic work is vast, classifiable according to several criteria: periodicity, artistic style, topics but, in general, we can say there are two emblematic themes he followed with predilection. Keywords: Orient, expressionism, landscape, München, art school.

The festival aimed to generate a greater un- derstanding of other countries through art and culture. The need for this had grown in the context of the European Eco- nomic Community, where countries started working together and their citizens living together. An introduction to each other’s culture could stimulate genuine interest and thereby strengthen dialogue and cohesion. No fewer than 26 festivals have taken place over the years, with top editions such as Europalia Spain (1985) and Europalia Austria (1987). In 1989, Europalia Japan marked the moment when the festival started to look beyond Europe. Several non-European countries have subsequently been invited, including Russia (2005) and India (2013). But a lot has changed since then. Today, it would be unthinkable for the festival to like it did 50 or even 20 years ago.
