De tekst is terug te vinden op de Liberales website, via http://liberales.be/ essays/paas). God is terug! Dat willen sommige opiniemakers ons toch wijsmaken (Sjoerd De Jong in NRC 20/12). Hoelang is hij al terug onder ons? In 2009 al schreef John Micklethwait, hoofdredacteur van The Economist, samen met zijn collega Adrian Wooldridge een boek met de spraakmakende titel God is Back (Micklethwait & Wooldridge 2009). Nog wat eerder, in 1990, liet de socioloog Peter Berger opte- kenen dat het afgelopen is met de secularisatie. Maar in 1980 berichtte Time ook al over Gods vermeende comeback. Is hij eigenlijk ooit weggeweest? In ieder geval: terug is hij! Ettelijke malen is zijn graf al gedolven, maar telkens opnieuw herrijst hij. Hij werft adolescenten op wereldjongerendagen, laat moskeeën volstromen, verovert het Afrikaanse continent, heeft een nieuwe en bezielende plaatsvervanger op aarde, en doet af en toe een ambassade ontploffen. Dwars- boomt God zelve de onomkeerbaar geachte secularisatie? Zelfs ongelovigen voelen zich genoodzaakt om de strijdbijl weer op te graven (Mortier 2011; Philipse 2012; van den Berg 2009; Verhofstadt 2013; Loftus 2010). Een atheïst met een slecht karakter zou dat het argument uit hardnekkigheid kunnen noemen. Verklaar God dood zoveel je wil, op marktpleinen en in atheïs- tische manifesten, maar we blijven lekker geloven.

And can they be a source of inspiration for reforms in established Western democracies? Het is bovendien een aangename verrassing om zo kort nadat ik een semester aan de universiteit van Gent verbonden ben geweest in deze prachtige stad terug te keren. De eerste John Rawlslezing werd in 2012 uit­ gesproken door Jan Terlouw en de tweede door Frank Vanden­ broucke. De twee vorige sprekers in deze serie hebben zich vooral geconcentreerd op wat men zou kunnen noemen "de eerste fase" in het denken van Rawls, namelijk de fase die tot een hoogtepunt komt in het vermaarde werk A Theory of Justice uit 1971. U kent allemaal het algemene idee van dat werk, zelfs wanneer u het niet gelezen hebt. Rawls probeert in A Theory of Justice een gedachte-experiment te voltrekken. The chapter will therefore include a brief discussion of contemporary thinkers who thought about European unification in order to provide a comparison with Schuman’s thoughts and give a more articulate version of his ideas. Key concepts will be European spiritual and cultural heritage with a focus on the human person and Christian morality and, when applicable, on supranationality. The intellectual climate that surrounded Schuman those days is barely reflected in his writings. His library in Scy-Chazelles confirms the supposition made by his biographer François Roth, that he was not much interested in fashionable contemporary books or intellectual theories. He owned scarcely any books by contemporary novelists such as Camus or Sartre. On the other hand he owned a great deal of history, Greek and Roman culture and religion such as the entire Summa Theologiae by Thomas Aquinas and the teachings of the Roman Catholic Church. Wat hij over religie zegt moet men uit zijn vele werken opdelven. Dat wil zeggen uit On Liberty (1859), maar ook uit Utilitarianism (1861), The System of Logie (1843), de Autobiography (1873) en An Examination of Sir William Hamilton's Philosophy (1865). Het meest in de buurt van een monografie komt nog Three Essays on Religion (1874), zij het dat het hierbij gaat om een postume heruitgave van essays die eerder in tijdschrif­ ten waren verschenen. Er is nog een ander probleem. Wie kennis neemt van de opvattingen van Mill over religie valt het onmiddellijk op dat de schrijver verschillende tegenstrijdige dingen beweert. Het lijkt wel alsof Mill moeite had met het bepalen van zijn hou­ ding tegenover het onderwerp. Nu kan dat natuurlijk te ma­ ken hebben met de ontwikkelingsgang die de schrijver heeft doorgemaakt.

    Probekapitel Dirk Verhofstadt: Pius XII. und die Vernichtung der Juden Der Priesterpräsident Tiso Im Oktober 1938 besetzte das faschistische Deutschland das Sudetenland mit seinem hohen deutschen Bevölkerungsanteil. Eine Folge davon war 1939 die Abspaltung der Slowakei von der Tschechoslowakei. Damit war ein formell souveräner Staat, de facto aber ein Protektorat Deutschlands entstanden, das von dem katholischen Priester Jozef Tiso geführt wurde. Er war als Nachfolger des Priesters Andrej Hlinka Vorsitzender der konservativen katholischen Slowakischen Volkspartei. Tiso wollte die slowakische Gemeinschaft zu einem katholischen Einheitsstaat umbilden und schlug sofort einen rücksichtslosen antisemitischen Kurs auf Kosten von Zehntausenden Juden ein, die sich im Laufe der Geschichte dort angesiedelt hatten. Im Parlament saßen sechzehn katholische Priester, von denen die antisemitische Politik mit Begeisterung unterstützt wurde. Am 9. September 1941 genehmigte die Regierung einen Judenkodex mit 270 antijüdischen Bestimmungen nach deutschem Vorbild. Die örtlichen katholischen Bischöfe hatten nichts dagegen, baten nur um Ausnahmen für die Juden, die katholisch getauft waren. Adolf Hitler war zufrieden mit der Haltung der slowakischen Regierung und begrüßte Priester-Präsident Tiso im Oktober 1941 herzlich in seinem Hauptquartier an der Ostfront. Die antisemitische Politik Tisos und seiner Regierung führte schließlich zu einem der schlimmsten Fälle von Verfolgung und Vernichtung der Juden in der Geschichte. So einigten sich die deutsche und die slowakische Regierung darauf, die Juden aus der Slowakei zu deportieren, um sie als Zwangsarbeiter einzusetzen. Die Slowakei war das einzige Land, das die Deportationen selbst organisierte und Deutschland für jeden de- portierten Juden 500 Reichsmark „als Ausgleich für Unterkunft, Verpflegung, Kleidung und Umschulung“ zahlen wollte. Für die „Nazis“ war es ein sehr gutes Geschäft.
