Is hij eigenlijk ooit weggeweest? In ieder geval: terug is hij! Ettelijke malen is zijn graf al gedolven, maar telkens opnieuw herrijst hij. Hij werft adolescenten op wereldjongerendagen, laat moskeeën volstromen, verovert het Afrikaanse continent, heeft een nieuwe en bezielende plaatsvervanger op aarde, en doet af en toe een ambassade ontploffen. Dwars- boomt God zelve de onomkeerbaar geachte secularisatie? Zelfs ongelovigen voelen zich genoodzaakt om de strijdbijl weer op te graven (Mortier 2011; Philipse 2012; van den Berg 2009; Verhofstadt 2013; Loftus 2010). Een atheïst met een slecht karakter zou dat het argument uit hardnekkigheid kunnen noemen. Verklaar God dood zoveel je wil, op marktpleinen en in atheïs- tische manifesten, maar we blijven lekker geloven.

We worden geacht ons al­ lemaal voor te stellen dat we regels voor een rechtvaardige sa­ menleving mogen opstellen, maar dan zonder dat we zelf weten welke positie we zullen innemen in de samenleving waarvoor we de regels aan het opstellen zijn.

The chapter will therefore include a brief discussion of contemporary thinkers who thought about European unification in order to provide a comparison with Schuman’s thoughts and give a more articulate version of his ideas.     Probekapitel Dirk Verhofstadt: Pius XII. und die Vernichtung der Juden Der Priesterpräsident Tiso Im Oktober 1938 besetzte das faschistische Deutschland das Sudetenland mit seinem hohen deutschen Bevölkerungsanteil. Eine Folge davon war 1939 die Abspaltung der Slowakei von der Tschechoslowakei. Damit war ein formell souveräner Staat, de facto aber ein Protektorat Deutschlands entstanden, das von dem katholischen Priester Jozef Tiso geführt wurde. Er war als Nachfolger des Priesters Andrej Hlinka Vorsitzender der konservativen katholischen Slowakischen Volkspartei. Tiso wollte die slowakische Gemeinschaft zu einem katholischen Einheitsstaat umbilden und schlug sofort einen rücksichtslosen antisemitischen Kurs auf Kosten von Zehntausenden Juden ein, die sich im Laufe der Geschichte dort angesiedelt hatten. Im Parlament saßen sechzehn katholische Priester, von denen die antisemitische Politik mit Begeisterung unterstützt wurde. Am 9. September 1941 genehmigte die Regierung einen Judenkodex mit 270 antijüdischen Bestimmungen nach deutschem Vorbild. Die örtlichen katholischen Bischöfe hatten nichts dagegen, baten nur um Ausnahmen für die Juden, die katholisch getauft waren. Adolf Hitler war zufrieden mit der Haltung der slowakischen Regierung und begrüßte Priester-Präsident Tiso im Oktober 1941 herzlich in seinem Hauptquartier an der Ostfront. Die antisemitische Politik Tisos und seiner Regierung führte schließlich zu einem der schlimmsten Fälle von Verfolgung und Vernichtung der Juden in der Geschichte.
