Additionally, Hubei Province is well-known for its diverse landforms, including mountains, hills, mounds and plains. This area is called “The Province of Thousand Lakes” due to the abundance of water resources. Geographical names are exclusive names given to physical or anthropogenic geographic entities at specific spatial locations and are important signs by which humans understand natural and human activities. In this study, geographic information systems (GIS) technology is adopted to establish a geodatabase of geographical names with particular characteristics in Hubei Province and extract certain geomorphologic and environmental factors. -

By the time the British crushed the Chinese navy in the so-called Opium Wars, the country and its government were in a state of shock and incapable of quickly catching-up with Western Europe. In contrast with such a narrative, this dissertation shows that the Great Qing was in fact far more aware of global trends than has been commonly assumed. Against the backdrop of the long eighteenth century, the author explores the fundamental historical notions of the Chinese maritime world as a conceptual divide between an inner and an outer sea, whereby administrators, merchants, and intellectuals paid close and intense attention to coastal seawaters. Drawing on archival sources from China, Japan, Korea, Vietnam, and the West, the author argues that the connection between the Great Qing and the maritime world was complex and sophisticated. -

《 》學報 ‧ 藝文│第三十三期 外文論文 A Study of Gender Equality in Humanistic Buddhism Chang Hongxing Ph.D. Candidate, Nanjing University Abstract Since Humanistic Buddhism was first proposed by Master Taixu, the issue of gender equality has gradually kindled widespread discussion in the field of Buddhism. During the Republican Era, Master Taixu and the female Buddhists of the Pure Bodhi Vihara have actively expressed their views on gender equality. Eventually, they reached a consensus of respecting a woman’s character, protecting her rights, and advocating equal status between men and women. After 1949, under the impetus of Venerable Master Hsing Yun, Venerable Yin Shun, Venerable Sheng Yen, Venerable Chao- hwei, thoughts on gender equality in Taiwan have made great strides. After 1980, the rejuvenation of Humanistic Buddhism in Mainland China in turn developed thoughts on gender equality. As a result, the overall status of female Buddhists in Mainland China has remarkably improved. There are discussions in the sūtras and the Vinaya (collection of monastic rules) concerning issues such as female renunciation, women’s status, and gender relations. In a nutshell, the attitude of ancient Indian Buddhism towards women has always cycled between respecting women and rejecting women. After Buddhism’s spread to China, due to China’s domestic politics, economics, cultures, and various other reasons, there was no lack of flash points in Chinese Buddhism regarding women. On the whole, the discrimination towards women derived from ancient Indian Buddhism persisted. -

AHI 163D Expressions of Originality in Visual Art and Culture of Early Modern China General Itinerary Professor Katharine Burnett University of California, Davis Summer Session I 2010 For AHI 163D in Summer 2010, we will be based in Hangzhou, the capital of the Southern Song Dynasty (1127‐1268), and a center of artistic production from that time on. Hangzhou is one of the most beautiful cities in China. Centered on the picturesque West Lake, it is rimmed with an important museum, teahouses and restaurants, temples with ancient sculptures, pagodas, and tea plantations. Fazang the Court Politician
CHAPTER TEN FAZANG THE COURT POLITICIAN As a court priest for over three decades (ca. 680-712), Fazang was actively involved in politics during a crucial period in history. This chapter has two purposes. On the one hand, through various facts about Fazang I throw some light on significant historical events and illustrate how these were shaped in part by Fazang’s political shrewdness and religious vision. On the other, I will explore the intellectual and histori- cal contexts for Fazang’s importance as a court chaplain. These touch on specific events on the eve of Empress Wu’s epochal dynasty-founding of 690 and those concerning the political transitions around 705 and 710. Understanding Fazang’s political role requires a view of approxi- mately fifty years of Empress Wu’s own political life. Although Fazang lived under six sovereigns of the Great Tang and Zhou,1 it is helpful to consider that Empress Wu began to manipulate imperial power long before she became the supreme ruler both in fact and in name, and that in a sense she was a focus of Fazang’s life and career. Given the ex- traordinary influence that she had over Fazang’s monastic and political life, I will devote three of the four sections of this chapter to Fazang’s relationship with Empress Wu, leaving his political role under the reigns of Empress Wu’s two successors (Zhongzong and Ruizong) to the last section. 1. FAZANG AND EMPRESS WU: 670-690 This section will treat two developments: the circumstances under which Fazang came into Empress Wu’s power circle, and a major poli- tico-religious event on the eve of Empress Wu’s Zhou dynasty. -

Mapping the Ascent to Enlightenment Ronald Y. Nakasone Trying to get a fix on the Huayan mind in the vast landscape of Buddhist thought interweaves memory with imagination. My inquiry reaches to the earliest recollections of Siddhārtha Gautama’s Enlightenment, to passages in the Avatam saka Sūtra and learned commentaries, and to my imaging of its significance. In the process a few questions emerged: What happened during the spiritual ascent that led to the Enlightenment? What is the nature of mind? What did Siddhārtha Gautama become Enlightened to? These questions, especially determining the content of the Buddha’s Enlightenment, pose major academic and intellectual questions. This essay will focus on the first and second questions; I dealt with the last question in “Spiritual Cartography: Mapping the Huayen Mind.”1 The early documents depict Gautama’s ascent to Enlightenment in heroic and mythical proportions. Written several centuries after the fact, much of the narrative is no doubt hagiography, embellished by the creative imagination and the hindsight of doctrinal rationalizations. Nonetheless, in sum, the documents chronicle an intensely personal pilgrimage that incorporates and supersedes competing spiritual landscapes. The narrative assumes the primacy of mind and efficacy of mental concentration. The narrative opens with Māra, the personification of darkness, alarmed at Prince Siddhārtha’s resolve to attain Enlightenment, launches successive waves of attack to dissuade him. He first sends his daughters who offer the pleasures of youth and worldly success. Unable to seduce the Prince, Māra attempts to frighten the Prince by dispatching an army of the most appalling demons; still unsuccessful, he unleashes the awesome powers of the wind and rain at his command. -

Yvon Wang University of Toronto [email protected] Abstract This article is an exploration of media and gender in urban and peri-urban China dur- ing the 1950s and early 1960s – specifically, the persistent trope of the “hooligan,” or liumang. Since at least the late imperial period, Chinese authorities had feared unmar- ried, impoverished, rootless men as the main source of crime, disorder, and outright rebellion. Yet such figures were simultaneously celebrated as knights-errant for their violent heroism in cultural works of enormous popularity across regions and classes. As the ruling Chinese Communist Party attempted to reshape society and culture after 1949, it condemned knight-errant tales and made hooliganism a crime. At the same time, the state tried to promote a new pantheon of vigilante-like men in the guise of revolutionary heroes. But the state’s control over deeply rooted cultural markets and their products was incomplete. Moreover, the same potent tools that had empowered the Party, in particular its rhetoric of revolutionary subjectivity and its harnessing of modern media technologies, were open as never before to being adopted by the very targets of its efforts at control and censure. -

chapter 6 A Preliminary Study of Kaoka 高甲 Playscripts in the Philippines Caroline Chia 1 Introduction As part of a book on Sinitic languages in Southeast Asia, particularly those that are increasingly endangered, this chapter emphasizes “Sinophone” and “Sinitic voices” in the Philippines. Briefly defined, the Sinophone landscape involves Sinitic languages, including Hokkien, and the associated cultures and com- munities which historically experienced colonialism and have increasingly been marginalized in more recent times.1 Here I focus on Sinophone speech, including the soundscapes in which speech is embedded, through theatrical performance in Hokkien. Kaoka was once a popular form of entertainment in Southeast Asia, but the Philippines is the only country in the region that still performs this theatrical art today. I furthermore aim to highlight the diversity of Sinophonic representations as seen in Kaoka playscripts. In these sources, only the phonetic elements have been preserved, whereas the logographic representations (known as Sinographs or Hanzi 漢字) have been omitted. As regards the “Sinitic voices” that this chapter – and this book in general – aims to highlight in the context of Southeast Asia’s Chinese minorities, the academic focus has previously been on the migration and economic devel- opment of Chinese communities in this region. These developments remain important and will be taken into consideration, but the focus here is on filling the cultural and linguistic gaps in scholarship on Kaoka in the Philippines.
