Jinshan Mountain Named as one of the 'Three Peaks of Jingkou' together with Jiaoshan mountain and Beigushan mountain, visitors usually visit N Jinshan mountain to experience the ambience and story background depicted in the 'White Snake Folklore'. Jinshan Temple is built at the LIANYUNGANG mountainside, ascending to the mountaintop, featuring a unique XUZHOU mountain view. SUQIAN Beigushan Mountain HUAI'AN YANCHENG Situated at the edge of Yangtze River, overlooking the entire river. This is where the well-known Ganlu Temple located, and also where the legendary warlord Liu Bei met his wife. Other than that, there are many spots associated with the history of Three Kingdoms. A famous scholar from Southern Song dynasty once left his famous quote about parenthood with a reference on the Three Kingdoms tale here. This is an activity pack to learn about the culture and traditions of Chinese New Year as observed in Malaysia. Due to the pandemic, many Girl Guide/Girl Scout units may not be able to meet face to face, therefore, leaders/units may adapt the activities to be done by individuals at home or in a group through virtual events. Suggested activities are simple and accompanied by references for leaders/units to do further research on each topic. A couple of references are suggested for each topic and these are not exhaustive. Leaders/units can do more research to find out more information. Individuals/units can choose activities they like from the list. It is not necessary to do all the activities listed in each topic. Most important is enjoy them with people whom you care! Due to the lack of time, we were not able to turn this into a nicely designed activity pack. We hope that by learning about culture, we could develop better understanding between people of different ethnicities as part of the peacebuilding process, and at the same time, having fun. Please note that the activities and descriptions are mostly based on the authors’ own knowledge and experience plus information from the internet. We apologize in advance should there be any parts that are inaccurate or cause discomfort in anyone. We would also like to record appreciation to the websites we referred in compiling information for this page. This is a volunteer project, not through any organisations, therefore there is no official badge linked to this pack. -
The Heritage of Non-Theistic Belief in China
The Heritage of Non-theistic Belief in China Joseph A. Adler Kenyon College Presented to the international conference, "Toward a Reasonable World: The Heritage of Western Humanism, Skepticism, and Freethought" (San Diego, September 2011) Naturalism and humanism have long histories in China, side-by-side with a long history of theistic belief. In this paper I will first sketch the early naturalistic and humanistic traditions in Chinese thought. I will then focus on the synthesis of these perspectives in Neo-Confucian religious thought. I will argue that these forms of non-theistic belief should be considered aspects of Chinese religion, not a separate realm of philosophy. Confucianism, in other words, is a fully religious humanism, not a "secular humanism." The religion of China has traditionally been characterized as having three major strands, the "three religions" (literally "three teachings" or san jiao) of Confucianism, Daoism, and Buddhism. Buddhism, of course, originated in India in the 5th century BCE and first began to take root in China in the 1st century CE, so in terms of early Chinese thought it is something of a latecomer. Confucianism and Daoism began to take shape between the 5th and 3rd centuries BCE. But these traditions developed in the context of Chinese "popular religion" (also called folk religion or local religion), which may be considered a fourth strand of Chinese religion. And until the early 20th century there was yet a fifth: state religion, or the "state cult," which had close relations very early with both Daoism and Confucianism, but after the 2nd century BCE became associated primarily (but loosely) with Confucianism. -

Pictographs in early Chinese writing 3.1 The beginnings of Chinese writing1 The Chinese script appears as a fully developed writing system in the late Shang .dynasty (fourteenth to eleventh centuries BC). From this period we have copious examples of the script inscribed or written on bones and tortoise shells, for the most part in the form of short divinatory texts. The myth of Madame White Snake is one of the most well known stories that survived a long period of time. The earliest known version of Madame White Snake was a supernatural story in 1550, which later became a prototype of numerous subsequent versions starting in 1624. This prototype was repeatedly re-written throughout history and was also made into different genres including plays, playlets, novels, films and television dramas. One of the latest versions was written by Li Pikwah, a popular novelist in Hong Kong, in 1993, titled, Green Snake. Green Snake is a parody of Madame White Snake written from the perspective of Little Green, the servant of Madame White and an auxiliary figure in the tradition. The novel is also an autobiography of Little Green, who satirically criticizes the story of Madame White Snake in retrospect. Little Green’s autobiography is a nostalgic reflection of the past as well as a critique of the structure of the story that has survived throughout history. These implications made in the story hint at the author’s personal yearning for traditional China as a Chinese resident in Hong Kong. -

101 Lodz Papers in Pragmatics 7.1 (2011): 101-133 DOI: 10.2478/v10016-011-0005-6 Lee Cher Leng Department of Chinese Studies, National University of Singapore ETHNOGRAPHY OF SINGAPORE CHINESE NAMES: RACE, RELIGION, AND REPRESENTATION Abstract Singapore Chinese is part of the Chinese Diaspora.This research shows how Singapore Chinese names reflect the Chinese naming tradition of surnames and generation names, as well as Straits Chinese influence. The names also reflect the beliefs and religion of Singapore Chinese. More significantly, a change of identity and representation is reflected in the names of earlier settlers and Singapore Chinese today. This paper aims to show the general naming traditions of Chinese in Singapore as well as a change in ideology and trends due to globalization. Introduction When parents choose a name for a child, the name necessarily reflects their thoughts and aspirations with regards to the child. These thoughts and aspirations are shaped by the historical, social, cultural or spiritual setting of the time and place they are living in whether or not they are aware of them. Thus, the study of names is an important window through which one could view how these parents prefer their children to be perceived by society at large, according to the identities, roles, values, hierarchies or expectations constructed within a social space. Historically, this was the case with most Non-Mandarin Chinese languages. Grammatical literacy in Chinese characters was primarily through Classical Chinese until the early 1900's. Romanization in Hokkien began in the early 1600's with the work of Spanish and later English missionaries with Hokkien-speaking Chinese communities in the Philippines and Malaysia. -
