ABSTRACT Conversion by the Book: Buddhist Print Culture in Early Republican China 經典佛化: 民國初期佛教出版文化 Gregory Adam Scott 史瑞戈 In this dissertation I argue that print culture acted as a catalyst for change among Buddhists in modern China. Through examining major publication institutions, publishing projects, and their managers and contributors from the late nineteenth century to the 1920s, I show that the expansion of the scope and variety of printed works, as well as new the social structures surrounding publishing, substantially impacted the activity of Chinese Buddhists. In doing so I hope to contribute to ongoing discussions of the ‘revival’ of Chinese Buddhism in the modern period, and demonstrate that publishing, propelled by new print technologies and new forms of social organization, was a key field of interaction and communication for religious actors during this era, one that helped make possible the introduction and adoption of new forms of religious thought and practice. 本論文的論點是出版文化在近代中國佛教人物之中,扮演了變化觸媒的角色. 通過研究從十 九世紀末到二十世紀二十年代的主要的出版機構, 種類, 及其主辦人物與提供貢獻者, 論文 說明佛教印刷的多元化 以及範圍的大量擴展, 再加上跟出版有關的社會結構, 對中國佛教 人物的活動都發生了顯著的影響. 此研究顯示在被新印刷技術與新形式的社會結構的推進 下的出版事業, 為該時代的宗教人物展開一種新的相互連結與構通的場域, 因而使新的宗教 思想與實踐的引入成為可能. 此論文試圖對現行關於近代中國佛教的所謂'復興'的討論提出 貢獻. The contents of this divine teaching are reproduced in several works, such as the Daoxuan lüshi gantonglu and the Zhong Tianzhu Sheweiguo Zhihuansi tujing. The Fayuan zhulin, compiled by Daoxuan's collaborator Daoshi, also preserves several passages, not paralleled in these works, but said to be part of Daoxuan's visionary instructions. These passages appear to have been taken from another record of this same event, titled Daoxuan lüshi zhuchi ganying ji. The Fayuan zhulin was completed in 668, only several months after Daoxuan's death. The Daoxuan lüshi zhuchi ganying ji, from which the various Fayuan zhulin passages on Daoxuan's exchanges with deities were taken, must have been compiled some time between the second lunar month in 667 and the third month in the following year. The quotations in the Fayuan zhulin from the Daoxuan lüshi zhuchi ganying ji take the form of newly revealed sermons of the Buddha and tell stories about various objects used by the Buddha during his life time.

I argue that the wealth, gender and power of the spiritual guides (kalyanamitras , literally ‘good friends’) in this narrative reflect the social and political hierarchies and patterns of Buddhist patronage in ancient Indian during the time of its compilation. In order to do this, I divide the study into three parts. In part I, ‘Text and Context’, I first investigate what is currently known about the origins and development of the Gandavyuha, its extant manuscripts, translations and modern scholarship.

  • Fazang the Court Politician
    CHAPTER TEN FAZANG THE COURT POLITICIAN As a court priest for over three decades (ca. 680-712), Fazang was actively involved in politics during a crucial period in history. This chapter has two purposes. On the one hand, through various facts about Fazang I throw some light on significant historical events and illustrate how these were shaped in part by Fazang’s political shrewdness and religious vision. On the other, I will explore the intellectual and histori- cal contexts for Fazang’s importance as a court chaplain. These touch on specific events on the eve of Empress Wu’s epochal dynasty-founding of 690 and those concerning the political transitions around 705 and 710. Understanding Fazang’s political role requires a view of approxi- mately fifty years of Empress Wu’s own political life. Although Fazang lived under six sovereigns of the Great Tang and Zhou,1 it is helpful to consider that Empress Wu began to manipulate imperial power long before she became the supreme ruler both in fact and in name, and that in a sense she was a focus of Fazang’s life and career. Given the ex- traordinary influence that she had over Fazang’s monastic and political life, I will devote three of the four sections of this chapter to Fazang’s relationship with Empress Wu, leaving his political role under the reigns of Empress Wu’s two successors (Zhongzong and Ruizong) to the last section. 1. FAZANG AND EMPRESS WU: 670-690 This section will treat two developments: the circumstances under which Fazang came into Empress Wu’s power circle, and a major poli- tico-religious event on the eve of Empress Wu’s Zhou dynasty.

    Mapping the Ascent to Enlightenment Ronald Y. Nakasone Trying to get a fix on the Huayan mind in the vast landscape of Buddhist thought interweaves memory with imagination. My inquiry reaches to the earliest recollections of Siddhārtha Gautama’s Enlightenment, to passages in the Avatam saka Sūtra and learned commentaries, and to my imaging of its significance. In the process a few questions emerged: What happened during the spiritual ascent that led to the Enlightenment? What is the nature of mind? What did Siddhārtha Gautama become Enlightened to? These questions, especially determining the content of the Buddha’s Enlightenment, pose major academic and intellectual questions. This essay will focus on the first and second questions; I dealt with the last question in “Spiritual Cartography: Mapping the Huayen Mind.”1 The early documents depict Gautama’s ascent to Enlightenment in heroic and mythical proportions. Written several centuries after the fact, much of the narrative is no doubt hagiography, embellished by the creative imagination and the hindsight of doctrinal rationalizations. Nonetheless, in sum, the documents chronicle an intensely personal pilgrimage that incorporates and supersedes competing spiritual landscapes. The narrative assumes the primacy of mind and efficacy of mental concentration. The narrative opens with Māra, the personification of darkness, alarmed at Prince Siddhārtha’s resolve to attain Enlightenment, launches successive waves of attack to dissuade him. He first sends his daughters who offer the pleasures of youth and worldly success. Unable to seduce the Prince, Māra attempts to frighten the Prince by dispatching an army of the most appalling demons; still unsuccessful, he unleashes the awesome powers of the wind and rain at his command.

    MISSION, MEDITATION AND MIRACLES: AN SHIGAO IN CHINESE TRADITION 釋智譽 PHRA KIATTISAK PONAMPON (KITTIPANYO BHIKKHU) THESIS SUBMITTED FOR THE DEGREE OF MASTER OF ARTS IN RELIGIOUS STUDIES, UNIVERSITY OF OTAGO, DUNEDIN, NEW ZEALAND OCTOBER 2014 ii ABSTRACT An Shigao is well known for the important role he played in the early transmission of Buddhism into China, and Chinese Buddhists have considered him to be a meditation master for centuries. However, recent scholarship on An Shigao (Zürcher, 2007; Forte, 1995; Zacchetti, 2002; Nattier, 2008) has focused on his role as a precursor of the Mahāyāna, his ordination status, and the authenticity of the texts attributed to him rather than the meditation techniques he used and taught to his followers in China. One reason for this is because his biographies are full of supernatural details, and many of the texts attributed to An Shigao are pseudepigraphia. In the first part of this MA thesis, I explore the biographical traditions about An Shigao. The close reading of the oldest biographies of An Shigao shows that during the time he was active in China, An Shigao was respected as a missionary, a meditation master and a miracle worker as well as a translator. This reputation continued to be important for Chinese Buddhists long after his death. Despite his reputation, his biographies contain almost no information about the form of meditation that he practiced and taught. However they contain much information about his supernatural abilities. In the second part of this MA thesis, I make a statistical analysis of all the meditation sūtras attributed to An Shigao and his school.

First, we conducted the soundscape physical index of the area in both winter and spring seasons to analyze its objective graphical expression. Second, we focused on people’s reactions to the soundscape in order to obtain a subjective evaluation of each component in the soundscape and integrated environment. Then, the relationship between the objective data and the subjective evaluation was analyzed. Finally, the impacts of the natural environment, history, and cultural factors on the evaluation of the Jingci Temple soundscape were studied.   • Tien-Tai Buddhism the Tien-Tai School Was Founded During the Suei Dynasty (589-618)
    Tien-Tai Buddhism The Tien-Tai school was founded during the Suei dynasty (589-618). Tien-Tai means 'Celestial Terrace' and is the name of a famous monastic mountain (Fig. 1, Kwo- Chin-Temple) where this school's founder, Chih-I (538-597), spent the majority of his life teaching there. This school is most famous for its profound interpretation of the Lotus Sutra (the main purpose of the sutra is to establish the one path, or vehicle, for attaining Buddhahood) and Chih-I's system of synthesizing the disparate teachings found in the Chinese Buddhist canon. Because this doctrine is based on the Lotus Sutra, it is also called the Lotus school. Nagarjuna is regarded as the first patriarch of this school because his commentary works on Prajnaparamita Sutra (Treatise on the Transcendent Virtue of Great Wisdom. Chinese, Ta- Chih-Tu-Lun) stated "The wisdom which understands the principle of emptiness, the wisdom which understands the phenomenal differences and the Buddha wisdom (the three kinds of wisdom) are actually attained by one thought". This statement was further expanded by the second patriarch, Hui-Wen, and his student Hui-Sze (514-577), the third patriarch who was also Chih-I's teacher, which formed the early structure of the Three- views theory. This theory later became the root theory of Tien-Tai school but the completed philosophic system of the school was not fully established until Chih-I finished the commentary work on the Lotus Sutra. This school takes as a premise that all phenomena are an expression of the true suchness (absoluteness) and this absoluteness is expressed in three phenomenon truths.

PAINE The Far Eastern geopolitical environment of the 1930s was characterized by systemic Chinese instability from an interminable civil war, growing Soviet missionary activities to promote communism, and a collapse of Asian trade brought on by the Great Depression. While Western attention remained rivet- ed on the more local problems of German compliance with the settlement terms of World War I and a depression that seemed to defy all conventional reme- dies, Japan focused with increasing horror on events in China. Japanese poli- cymakers had great difficulty communicating to their Western counterparts their sense of urgency concerning the dangers presented by the unfolding events in Asia. Their task was greatly complicated by the many myths obscuring the true nature of Russo-Chinese relations. These myths then distorted foreign understanding of Sino-Japanese relations. Russia is not usually considered in the context of the Far East. Both of its modern capitals – St. Petersburg and Moscow – are in Europe, its primary cul- tural ties are also with Europe, and yet much of its territory lies beyond the Ural Mountains in the Far East.

Greene 1 Introduction It goes without saying that pratītyasamutpāda – “dependent origination” – is one of the most important technical formulations of doctrinal Buddhism.1 According to some early sources, pratītyasamutpāda indeed encapsulates the whole of the Buddha’s teaching, such that “one who sees dependent origination sees the Dharma, and one who sees the Dharma sees dependent origination”.2 It is thus not surprising that pratītyasamutpāda figures prominently in the works of the earliest known translator of Buddhist texts into Chinese, An Shigao 安世高 (fl. 148–168 CE),3 whose oeuvre focused precisely on the kinds of Āgama, early commentarial, and proto-Abhidharma literature where pratītyasamutpāda plays such an important role. An Shigao’s translations can be dated with reasonable precision, and they are thus important source mate- rials for Indian Buddhism during the early years of the common era, a moment in Indian Buddhist intellectual history for which we have little other direct evidence. Since the Abhidharma itself was a project centered on the precise and systematic definition and explication of the important technical termi- nology found in the sūtras, An Shigao’s varied and often surprising Chinese translations of this terminology (such as the pratītyasamutpāda formula) may in some cases give us a window onto the currents of Indian scholastic thought 1 On pratītyasamutpāda, the classic study of Louis de La Vallée Poussin, 1913 remains one of the best.
