57TH ANNUAL ALPA AIR SAFETY FORUM August 15–18, 2011 | Washington Hilton | Washington, DC WELCOME! To the 57th ALPA Air Safety Forum Welcome to ALPA’s 57th Air Safety Forum. The theme of this year’s Forum, “One Level of Safety: 80 Years and Counting,” is a simple, resolute statement of fact. Eight decades ago a select body of airline pilots gathered at the Morrison Hotel in Chicago to discuss mounting concerns about aviation safety. And from this historic assembly, an international advocacy group—bearing the motto Schedule with Safety—was founded. Since that critical moment in aviation history, ALPA has spearheaded numerous safety campaigns, collaborating with industry stakeholders to develop such important initiatives as the cockpit traffic alert and collision avoidance system, ground proximity warning systems, the centerline approach light system, airplane seat belt signs, and more. Pilot representatives continue to offer their knowledge, experience, and unique perspective to ensure that air travel remains the safest mode of public transportation. As we all know, aviation is an industry in constant change, as are its demands on safety, and we convene for the next four days to continue this work. The Air Line Pilots Association, International, in recent years, has used this annual Forum to also highlight the outstanding contributions and accomplishments of the organization’s security, jumpseat, and pilot assistance efforts. In addition to this week’s presentations and panel discussions, we will take time to acknowledge and celebrate individuals from each of these four disciplines who volunteer their time to defend and advance our profession. I am a firm believer that we accomplish so much more when we work together. In this spirit, I hope you will join me in using this opportunity to network with your professional peers, share information, and be part of a collective conversation to improve air travel. Thanks for joining us and being a part of this very special event.
