MUSIC IN THE CLASSROOM Episode I – Heim-Spiel A staged concert in schools for students ages 10 and up

Music: Excerpts from Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, George Gershwin, Pjotr Iljitsch Tchaikovsky, and others. Direction: Salomé Im Hof With musicians of the Chamber Orchestra: Etele Dósa (Clarinette), Simon Lilly (Trumpet), Tamás Vásárhelyi (Violin), Christoph Dangel (Cello) Heimspiel im Klassenzimmer © Christian Flierl

What happens if the first violinist can`t keep time? What happens if things don`t always go according to plan? And what does Beethoven`s fifth sound like? The symphony backwards? Four musicians are playing in various schools, with a suitcase in one hand and an instrument in th e other. They play a variety of music showing the many different tempos, humour and shrewdness with a career and life as a professional musician.

With Heim-Spiel, the students not only get to know the musicians personally, but will also go on a journey through the history of music from Bach to Beethoven, Tchaikovsky and Stravinsky to Stockhausen.

Duration: 45-minute performance plus a follow-up discussion. The total duration is 2 hours. Cost: CHF 200.- per performance/school class

FORMAT FOR MUSIC IN THE CLASSROOM

Normally young people must come to us in order to get to know the concert hall as a special place. Instead, we go out and visit children and young adults in their own classrooms. The students themselves are an elementary part of a musical -theatre production that is as witty as it is profound, and thus take responsibility for the success of the performance. It is obvious that they learn a lot about us and us about them, not only in conversation but also in what has been experienced together after the performance. Students do not always react politely, but always honestly and with a dialogue that can hardly be more direct.

Music is a constant presence for young people today. With iPods and YouTube, it`s availability is unlimited and accompanies everyday life. The "Music in the Classroom" performance offers a chance to increase the value of listening to live music, through its expressiveness, energy and feelings of being in a physically direct space. Music, which is not used as an accompaniment or something in the background, is the focus.

«The most valuable things I`ve ever seen in all my life…I`ve made a career as a musician.» Simon Lilly, Principal Trumpet Chamber Orchestra Basel Heim-Spiel im Klassenzimmer ©Christian Flierl

Audience Impressions «I loved it very much. I am usually a dubstep guy, but today I was very impressed.»
