The 2020 edition brings together a typically wide variety of constituents – an exploration of music from Ireland, Scotland and Wales, a feature of Leoš Janáček’s amazingly original output and a celebration of Beethoven in his 250th birthday year. The Festival’s advocacy of contemporary music continues with a corpus of exciting commissions from Tarik O’Regan (composer-in-residence), Martin Butler, Gary Carpenter, Amelia Clarkson, Ninfea Cruttwell-Reade (the first Presteigne ‘Evolve’ composer), Joseph Phibbs, Emma-Ruth Richards and RPS Emerging Composer, Robin Haigh. Supporting events include three outstanding Irish films, talks from Peter J Conradi, Stephen Johnson, Nicholas Murray and Fiona Sampson, an exhibition in association with the Sidney Nolan Trust and, for the third consecutive year, the popular Presteigne Open Studios weekend. A starry artist line-up sees the return of Festival favourites Clare Hammond, the Carducci Quartet and Amy Dickson, whilst those appearing for the first time include Chloë Hanslip, the Bath Camerata and Jonathan Gunthorpe. I very much hope you’ll be tempted to join us in Radnorshire’s favourite Festival town for a truly mouth-watering menu of events. Zu den Highlights gehören Filme wie SHUTTER, PROM NIGHT, THE RUINS, NIM’S ISLAND, LEATHERHEADS, 21, SHINE A LIGHT, MARRIED LIFE, OSS 117, MADE OF HONOR, WHAT HAPPENS IN VEGAS, DEAL, REST STOP 2, ROGUE, NEVER BACK DOWN und STREET KINGS.

  • Synesthetic Codes in Ligeti's Music
SOUNDS, LINES AND COLORS: SYNESTHETIC CODES IN LIGETI'S MUSIC Assoc. Prof., Ph.D. BIANCA ŢIPLEA TEMEŞ “Gheorghe Dima” Music Academy, Cluj-Napoca Bianca ŢIPLEA TEMEŞ is Associate Professor Ph.D. at the ”Gheorghe Dima” Music Academy and head of the artistic department of the Transylvania Philharmonic. Holder of a Ph.D. in Musicology (National University of Music Bucharest), she has published in Romania, Spain, Switzerland, Lithuania, the Czech Republic and the U.S., and has participated in symposiums and conferences at home as well as in Vienna, Oldenburg, Vilnius, Dublin, Rome, Cambridge, Szombathely and Belgrade. She was the recipient of an ERASMUS scholarship at the University of Cambridge, where she worked with Nicholas Cook, serves as Visiting Professor at the University of Oviedo, Spain and at the Istituto Musicale ”Pietro Mascagni” in Livorno, Italy, and was the recipient of a research fellowship from the Paul Sacher Foundation in Basel and of a DAAD fellowship in Berlin. ABSTRACT Few modern composers have explored the relationship between sound and image to a greater extent than Ligeti. A self-proclaimed synesthete, he relied on both explicit and implicit visual stimuli to influence his creative process at every level. The arts of painting and graphics provided him with a sense of the decorative, while computer-generated images such as the Julia or Mandelbrot sets supplied him with new and modern means of inspiration. Recognized as a great connoisseur of the fine arts, from Canaletto and Guardi to Picasso, Magritte and the collages of Peter Balke, he seemed to blend sounds, lines and colors in his music, developing compositional methods from pictorial techniques and optical effects.

  • Press Release
MEDIA INFORMATION: For Immediate release Psappha: Boulez – Le Marteau sans maître – A twentieth century classic Thursday 22 March 2018 at 7.30pm, Hallé St Peter’s, 40 Blossom St, Manchester M4 6BF Psappha, Manchester’s professional contemporary classical music ensemble, presents Pierre Boulez’ iconic Le Marteau sans maître (The Hammer without a master) – a classic of the twentieth century whose sonority and sense of time and direction were profoundly influenced by music from Asia and Africa. Psappha will also present the world première of rising star Tom Harrold’s new work, Dark Dance, which the ensemble commissioned to complement the Boulez. Tim Williams, Psappha’s Artistic Director says: “Tom has more than risen to the challenge of writing a work to complement Boulez’s Le Marteau sans maître. His piece is exhilarating and full of rhythmic energy across its eight-minute span. Psappha’s musicians relish the challenge of performing music that is difficult yet rewarding. Le Marteau is a perfect example of this with its complex writing requiring virtuosity from the ensemble both individually and collectively. We’re very much looking forward to this performance and we are grateful for the support that The Fidelio Charitable Trust has given towards the commissioning of Tom Harrold’s work.” Composer Tom Harrold says: “This is perhaps one of the most unusual pieces I have ever written. I’ve really taken the opportunity to experiment. It’s been a cleansing and enlightening experience for me and I’m enormously grateful to Psappha for commissioning me to write the piece.” Boulez’ Le Marteau sans maître, after a text by surrealist poet René Char, features the young British mezzo soprano Jessica Gillingwater with six instrumentalists in the unusual combination of alto flute, viola, guitar, vibraphone, xylorimba, and percussion.

  • Benjamin Britten: Text Setting As Cultural Custodian in Art Song
Benjamin Britten: Text Setting as Cultural Custodian in Art Song Paul Higgins Thesis Submitted to the National University of Ireland Maynooth for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy Department of Music National University of Ireland Maynooth Maynooth, Co. Kildare October 2010 Head of Department: Professor Fiona M. Palmer Supervisor: Doctor Lorraine Byrne Bodley For Rita ABSTRACT Benjamin Britten: Text Setting as Cultural Custodian in Art Song Proposing the thesis that, for Benjamin Britten, text-setting analysis is analogous to song analysis; this dissertation cautions that non-engagement in text-setting is to approach song as if it were instrumental music; likewise, to consider inadequately the wide-ranging musical implications of music-text relations is to limit the interpretive possibilities of song. This research approaches the analysis of song through an engagement with songs composed by Britten in the 1930s from texts by W. H. Auden. Blending insights from literary and linguistic studies with rhythmic analysis, this necessarily interdisciplinary research places song analysis in cultural context; text (poetic and musical) requires social context. Setting out with this rationale and these aims, this dissertation offers new perspectives for song interpretation, song classification and the social function of song. Poetic analysis is presented as central to an understanding of Britten’s song text setting. The mimetic possibility of song to present word and mood painting receives widespread support. This dissertation goes beyond this often considered diminutive fundamental capacity of song to represent text, and recognises a more complete representation of poetic form, the effect of individual words and word units and poetic meaning, in song.

  • American Music in the Culture of Self-Actualization: Performance and Composition in the Long 1970S
American Music in the Culture of Self-Actualization: Performance and Composition in the Long 1970s By John David Kapusta A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Music in the Graduate Division of the University of California, Berkeley Committee in charge: Professor Mary Ann Smart, Chair Professor James Davies Professor Scott Saul Summer 2017 American Music in the Culture of Self-Actualization: Performance and Composition in the Long 1970s Copyright 2017 By John David Kapusta 1 Abstract American Music in the Culture of Self-Actualization: Performance and Composition in the Long 1970s by John David Kapusta Doctor of Philosophy in Music University of California, Berkeley Professor Mary Ann Smart, Chair This study explores how US concert musicians of the sixties, seventies, and eighties came to imagine the act of composing, performing, and listening as a transformative practice of “self-actualization.” I borrow this latter term from the influential humanistic psychologist Abraham Maslow, whose contemporary writings helped popularize the notion that one’s true self was to be “actualized” not through the so- called “rational” processes of the ego-mind but in the throes of “intuitive” psychosomatic activity. Musicologists often treat the era as one of aesthetic fracture, but I show how composers as musically diverse as Pauline Oliveros, George Rochberg, and John Adams, along with a host of their performer-collaborators, all helped to foster an emergent culture of musical self-actualization that continues to shape performance culture and musicological inquiry today. The history of US art music within the culture of self-actualization sheds new light on contemporary debates over the self and human nature—debates that still inform American studies and US culture more broadly.
