JENKINS Abstract The unequal distribution of legal protections on endangered species has been attributed to the “charisma” and “cuteness” of protected species. However, the theory of kin selection, which predicts the genetic relationship between organisms is proportional to the amount of cooperation between them, offers an evolutionary explanation for this phenomenon. In this thesis, it was hypothesized if the unequal distribution of legal protections on endangered species is a result of kin selection, then the genetic similarity between a species and Homo sapiens is proportional to the legal protections on that species. -

Checklist of Amphibians and Reptiles of Morocco: a Taxonomic Update and Standard Arabic Names

Morocco has one of the highest levels of biodiversity and endemism in the Western Palaearctic, which is mainly attributable to the country’s complex topographic and climatic patterns that favoured allopatric speciation. Taxonomic studies of Moroccan amphibians and reptiles have increased noticeably during the last few decades, including the recognition of new species and the revision of other taxa. In this study, we provide a taxonomically updated checklist and notes on nomenclatural changes based on studies published before April 2020. The updated checklist includes 130 extant species (i.e., 14 amphibians and 116 reptiles, including six sea turtles), increasing considerably the number of species compared to previous recent assessments. Arabic names of the species are also provided as a response to the demands of many Moroccan naturalists. Keywords. Leiolepis ngovantrii sp. nov. differs from all sexual species of Leiolepis by lacking males and from all asexual species by having nine rows of enlarged keeled scales across the forearm and 37–40 subdigital lamellae beneath the fourth toe. Phylogenetic inference based on 700 base pairs of the mitochondrial ND2 region, placed L. ngovantrii sp. nov. among the currently described asexual species and was used to assess the maternal ancestors of the remaining asexual species. Both maximum parsimony and maximum likelihood analyses recovered L. guttata as the maternal ancestors of L. guentherpetersi, L. boehmei, and L. ngovantrii sp. nov., and L. boehmei as the maternal ancestor to L. triploida. Kellner4 Iguanians are one of the most diverse groups of extant lizards (41,700 species) with acrodontan iguanians dominating in the Old World, and non-acrodontans in the New World. A new lizard species presented herein is the first acrodontan from South America, indicating acrodontans radiated throughout Gondwana much earlier than previously thought, and that some of the first South American lizards were more closely related to their counterparts in Africa and Asia than to the modern fauna of South America. This suggests both groups of iguanians achieved a worldwide distribution before the final breakup of Pangaea. At some point, non-acrodontans replaced acrodontans and became the only iguanians in the Amer- icas, contrary to what happened on most of the Old World. We encountered five adult L. peguensis (Fig. 2) in Pang Mu Sub-district (19.3572°N, 97.9809°E) and Pha Bong Sub-district (19.2394°N, 97.9978°E), Namtok Mae Surin National Park, during two dry seasons (March–May) in 2018–2019. -

The findings were based on RAG1 and C-mos gene analyses. The DNA sequences were also compared with the other squamate reptiles. The analysis strongly supported that L. reevesii rubritaeniata was related more closely to L. belliana belliana than to L. boehmei. The phylogenetic position of Leiolepis spp., however, was contentious with regard to its relationship among the Leiolepidinae, Agaminae and Chamaeleonidae, which suggested that their phylogeny remains uncertain. INDIA: NORTHWEST CUSTOM TOUR TRIP REPORT 17 – 29 MARCH 2019 By Andy Walker Seeing this family of Asiatic Lions was a tour highlight and one of our main mammal targets. www.birdingecotours.com [email protected] 2 | TRIP REPORT India: Northwest, March 2019 Overview This 13-day custom bird-and-mammal-watching tour of Northwest India commenced in New Delhi on the 17th of March 2019 and ended in Ahmedabad on the 29th of March 2019. The tour was a slightly shortened version of our Northwest India February set departure tour with a couple of slight modifications to fit the timescale available. During this tour we birded areas around Desert National Park, Little Rann of Kutch, Gir National Park and Great Rann of Kutch. A total of 226 bird species were seen (plus two species heard only). One of the main highlight birds of the tour (and one of the major reasons for our visit to this area) included three individuals of the Critically Endangered (BirdLife International) Great Indian Bustard, a species in severe and rapid decline with a global population estimated to be only 150-200 birds. Other highlights included a couple of dozen Green Avadavats, several Grey Hypocoliuses (a species in a monotypic family due to its uniqueness), the scarce and local and/or Indian endemics White- browed (Stolitczka’s) Bush Chat, Marshall’s Iora, Sykes’s Lark, Indian Black-lored Tit, White-naped Tit, White-spotted Fantail, and White-bellied Minivet, stunning breeding- plumage Dalmatian Pelicans (along with plenty of the more widespread Great White Pelican), beautiful Demoiselle and Common Cranes in their thousands, equally gorgeous Greater and Lesser Flamingos, and a nesting pair of Red-necked Falcons, along with numerous other raptors such as Indian Vulture, Steppe, Tawny, and Booted Eagles, Long-legged Buzzard, White- eyed Buzzard, and Montagu’s Harrier, Chestnut-bellied and Painted Sandgrouse, several displaying (and even copulating) Indian Coursers, and Sykes’s, Indian, and Jungle Nightjars.
