The Role of Deobandi Ulema in Strengthening the Foundations of Indian Freedom Movement (1857-1924) The Role of Deobandi Ulema in Strengthening the Foundations of Indian Freedom Movement (1857-1924) * Turab-ul-Hassan Sargana **Khalil Ahmed ***Shahid Hassan Rizvi Abstract The main objective of the present study is to explain the role of the Deobandi faction of scholars in Indian Freedom Movement. In fact, there had been different schools of thought who supported the Movement and their works and achievements cannot be forgotten. Historically, Ulema played a key role in the politics of subcontinent and the contribution of Dar ul Uloom Deoband, Mazahir-ul- Uloom (Saharanpur), Madrassa Qasim-ul-Uloom( Muradabad), famous madaris of Deobandi faction is a settled fact. Their role became both effective and emphatic with the passage of time when they sided with the All India Muslim League. Their role and services in this historic episode is the focus of the study in hand. Keywords: Deoband, Aligarh Movement, Khilafat, Muslim League, Congress Ulama in Politics: Retrospect: Besides performing their religious obligations, the religious ulema also took part in the War of Freedom 1857, similar to the other Indians, and it was only due to their active participation that the movement became in line and determined. These ulema used the pen and sword to fight against the British and it is also a fact that ordinary causes of 1857 War were blazed by these ulema. Mian Muhammad Shafi writes: Who says that the fire lit by Sayyid Ahmad was extinguished or it had cooled down? These were the people who encouraged Muslims and the Hindus to fight against the British in 1857. -

I am happy to acknowledge that the university where I received my training in the period from 1933 to 1940 also provided the stimulus for its final completion. I am greatly indebted to the personal interest taken in my studies by professor Dr. W. F. Wertheim and Dr. J. M. Pluvier. Without their encouragement, their critical observations and their advice the result would certainly have been of less value than it may be now. The same applies to Mrs. Dr. S. C. L. It will defend one particular prism for such an endeavour, that of the history of political emotions present in the books written by major politicians and intellectuals in late colonial India. Such means of access, we think, should explore both Urdu and English emotional components of the Aqeel Collection writings by using the latest research in the domain called ‘history of emotions.’ The article will provide some modest ideas on why and how the emotional intends to open up new ways of understanding the way politicians at that time approached and debated the future of British India into two independent nations, India and Pakistan. The article partly shows why emotional life shaped political action at the time, and how political emotions were, in turn, able to guide and strengthen the construction of post-imperialist, nationalist or supremacist ideologies that still persist today. -

He is remembered in the history of India not only for the role he played in the freedom struggle of the country, but also as the first Education Minister of independent India, he made exemplary contributions in nation-building leaving his indelible imprints in the field of education. He believed that materialization of India as a developed nation is possible only through union, solidarity and communal harmony. Maulana Azad is undoubtedly one of the architects of modern secular India who occupies a special place in the Indian History. Being a creative thinker acquainted with both traditional and modern education, Maulana Azad laid an undying impact on the educational aspects of modern India. This paper is an attempt to explore the vision and thought of Azad which were inevitable in laying down the foundation of modern India. This paper also highlights his policies and principles as existing in his writings and speeches to explore a devised to make India a centre of all intellectual and scientific developments in the world. 235 Samina Awan: Muslim Urban Politics Muslim Urban Politics in Colonial Punjab: Majlis-i-Ahrar’s Early Activism Samina Awan Allama Iqbal Open University, Pakistan ________________________________________________________________ The British annexed Punjab in 1849, and established a new system of administration in form and spirit. They also introduced western education, canal colonies and a modern system of transportation, which had its impact on the urban population. In rural Punjab they collaborated with the landlords and feudal elite to get their support in strengthening the province as ‘grain basket’ for the British Army. The Majlis-i-Ahrar-i-Islam(hereafter MAI) was an urban Muslim organisation, comprised of ex-Khilafatists, trained in agitational politics during the period 1919-1929, many of whom were ex-Congrssites. Ahrar leaders split with the INC over the issue of the Nehru Report in 1929. Soon after the formation of the new party, they decided to participate in INC-led civil disobedience movement of 1930 and were interred in large numbers. The MAI’s platform was based on a united India, but one, which was free from imperial control, anti-feudal, with less economic disparities and had an Islamic system for the Muslims of India. _______________________________________________________________ Introduction A number of religio-political movements emerged from Punjab during the first half of the twentieth century. A study of the history, politics and social structure of Punjab is necessary in order to understand these movements. The Majlis-i- Ahrar-i-Islam (MAI) was founded in 1929 in Lahore, and reflected a unique blend of religion and politics in the multi-cultural province of Punjab in British India. -

KHILAFAT MOVEMENT AND THE PROVINCE OF SINDH Dr. Nasreen Afzal* KHILAFAT MOVEMENT AND THE PROVINCE OF SINDH ABSTRACT The Khilafat Movement started by the Muslims of India is directly related to the disintegration of the Ottoman Empire of Turkey, the only Muslim power of the world during the twentieth century, at the hands of different European nations and particularly against the hostile attitude of Britain towards Turkey . Like other areas of India Muslim s of Sindh played significant role in this movement. This article deals with the different efforts of Muslims of Sindh along with the Muslims of other areas for saving khlifat. Key words: Non violence non co-operation movement, Congress, Fatwas, Hijrat * Assistant Professor, Department of History , University of Karachi, Pakistan 51 Jhss, Vol. 1, No.1 , January to June 2010 The institution of Khilafat began after the death of Holy Prophet (P.B.U.H) in 632 AD when Hazrat Abu Bakr, who was the successor of the Holy Prophet, adopted the title of Khaltfatu-Rasool-i-illah , successor of Prophet of God. 1 The successor of Hazrat Abu Bakr, Hazrat Umar simplified the title to Khaltfah 2 and the Caliph (An English version of Khaltfah ) became temporal and spiritual head of the entire Muslims of the World. The first four caliphs were all selected democratically. However, after the death of Hazrat Ali, Amir Mu’awiyah laid down the foundation of Umayyad Dynasty, which changed the nature of Khilafat from democratic institution to monarchy. Umayyads and the rulers of the successive Muslim dynasties such as Abbasids, Fatimid (Egypt) and finally Ottomans (Turkey) continued to use the title of Caliph as used by four early Caliphs and further strengthening the institution of Khilafat, as a result Caliph became the symbolic head of the Muslim rule, even outside of Arabia. -

It is also alleged that the University is being administered by the members of the Muslim Community and as such it is entitled to be declared as a minority educational institution within the meaning of Section 2(g) of the National Commission for Minority Educational Institutions Act (for short the Act). Hence this petition. 2 In its reply dated 3.4.2013, the State Government has supported the petitioner’s claim about its minority status. It is also mentioned in the reply that the beneficiaries of the University are also members of the Muslim Community. -

1. LETTER TO C. F. ANDREWS ALIGARH, November 23 [1920]1 MY DEAREST CHARLIE2, I have your letters and your wire. Have I done you an injustice? I simply wired saying I was trying to send you—I did not say you had accepted the post. And I said what I did on the strength of our conversation.3 In any case there will be no pressure whatsoever brought to bear on you. You wills simply do what you can for the Muslim University. Yes I realize the necessity of putting the English connection on a pure basis. In its present condition it is hateful. But I am not as yet sure that it must be ended at any cost. It may be that the English temperament is not responsive to a status of perfect equality with the black and the brown races. Then the English must be made to retire from India. But I am not prepared to reject the possibility of an honourable equality. The connection must end on the clearest possible proof that the English have hopelessly failed to realize the first principle of religion, namely, brotherhood of man. Baro Dada’s4 letter has not been received by me. It may be in the Ashram or it may be received by me tomorrow on reaching Delhi. I have duly telegraphed to you. I cannot wire any message to Dr. Dutta but if there is yet time I shall endeavour to write out something for him. I do hope you are keeping well. I do not wonder at the Gujarati children having been withdrawn.5 I do not think you have lost anything.
