The Role of Deobandi Ulema in Strengthening the Foundations of Indian Freedom Movement (1857-1924) The Role of Deobandi Ulema in Strengthening the Foundations of Indian Freedom Movement (1857-1924) * Turab-ul-Hassan Sargana **Khalil Ahmed ***Shahid Hassan Rizvi Abstract The main objective of the present study is to explain the role of the Deobandi faction of scholars in Indian Freedom Movement. In fact, there had been different schools of thought who supported the Movement and their works and achievements cannot be forgotten. Historically, Ulema played a key role in the politics of subcontinent and the contribution of Dar ul Uloom Deoband, Mazahir-ul- Uloom (Saharanpur), Madrassa Qasim-ul-Uloom( Muradabad), famous madaris of Deobandi faction is a settled fact. Their role became both effective and emphatic with the passage of time when they sided with the All India Muslim League. Their role and services in this historic episode is the focus of the study in hand. Keywords: Deoband, Aligarh Movement, Khilafat, Muslim League, Congress Ulama in Politics: Retrospect: Besides performing their religious obligations, the religious ulema also took part in the War of Freedom 1857, similar to the other Indians, and it was only due to their active participation that the movement became in line and determined. These ulema used the pen and sword to fight against the British and it is also a fact that ordinary causes of 1857 War were blazed by these ulema. Mian Muhammad Shafi writes: Who says that the fire lit by Sayyid Ahmad was extinguished or it had cooled down? These were the people who encouraged Muslims and the Hindus to fight against the British in 1857. -

HAPPY HOME SCHOOL SYSTEM MRS. MARYAM FARUQI Tribute to a Pioneer in Education Mrs. Maryam Faruqi is a well-known name in the educational circles of Pakistan. She is the founder of the Happy Home School System. FAMILY HISTORY: Her success can be attributed to her passion for education and the restless desire to utilize her potential for the service of humanity. She was born in India to Sir Ebrahim and Lady Hawabai Ebrahim Haroon Jaffer. Her father tried to create an educational awakening amongst the Muslims and laid the foundation of the Bombay Provincial Muslim Educational Conference which was affiliated to the All India Mohammedan Educational Conference of Aligarh. He also set up a school in Pune which is to date offering excellent education to Muslim girls. EARLY EDUCATION: Her education started from the Islamia School, Pune, which is now a full-fledged school named after her parents. When she topped in grade- 6, she was asked by the Headmistress to teach Urdu to class-V. She felt on top of the world when at the end of the period the Headmistress remarked, “I bet you will be a good Headmistress.” That was her first success. She gave her Matriculation Examination through the Convent of Jesus and Mary, Pune and acquired First Merit Position. Her name remains etched on the Honour Roll Board. She joined the prestigious Naurosji Wadia College and her outstanding intermediate results earned her the Moosa Qasim Gold Medal. In 1945, she graduated from Bombay University with distinction & was awarded a Gold Medal in B.A Honours. -

Two Nation Theory: Its Importance and Perspectives by Muslims Leaders Nation The word “NATION” is derived from Latin route “NATUS” of “NATIO” which means “Birth” of “Born”. Therefore, Nation implies homogeneous population of the people who are organized and blood-related. Today the word NATION is used in a wider sense. A Nation is a body of people who see part at least of their identity in terms of a single communal identity with some considerable historical continuity of union, with major elements of common culture, and with a sense of geographical location at least for a good part of those who make up the nation. We can define nation as a people who have some common attributes of race, language, religion or culture and united and organized by the state and by common sentiments and aspiration. A nation becomes so only when it has a spirit or feeling of nationality. A nation is a culturally homogeneous social group, and a politically free unit of the people, fully conscious of its psychic life and expression in a tenacious way. Nationality Mazzini said: “Every people has its special mission and that mission constitutes its nationality”. Nation and Nationality differ in their meaning although they were used interchangeably. A nation is a people having a sense of oneness among them and who are politically independent. In the case of nationality it implies a psychological feeling of unity among a people, but also sense of oneness among them. The sense of unity might be an account, of the people having common history and culture. -

Journal of Historical Studies Vol. II, No. I (January-June 2016) Muslims Historiography of the Caliphate in the British India (1857-1947) Shumaila Firdous History College, Nanjing University, China Abstract: This study intends to analyze The Muslims’ Historiography of the Caliphate in British India (1857-1947). Muslim historiography from earlier period to nineteenth century passed through many stages which represents its changing nature and structure. In India, the Muslim historiography played a very important role in creating a separate Muslim identity. During the colonial period Muslims had to face a bulk of problems, but the intellectual challenge was the most important. Many Western Orientalists and Indian scholars had launch a move to alter the history writing, construct anti-Muslim heroism and challenge the historical narrative of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and the early Muslim leadership. Although Muslims were also divided into two major sects (Shia, Sunni), they felt a need to respond intellectually and uniformly to the western intellectual challenges. That was the beginning of the modern Indian Muslim historiography with a re-constructionist and revisionist approach on the basis of modern logic, reason, tradition and through historical ideals. Three schools of thought came into existence, Rationalist/Modernist, Traditionalist/Orthodox and Idealist in India Muslim historiography. Every school follow a different a different approach to historiography. Shibli Naumani, Syed Ameer Ali, Moin ud din Nadvi, Akber Najeeb Aabadi, Aslam Jairajpuri, and Abdul Haleem Sharar’s has contributed in exemplary way, dealing with the history of Pious Caliphate, Umayyads, Abbasids and Spanish Muslim history as the golden era of Islam. This tendency contributed to the emergence of two nation theory and created a strong nationalism among the Muslims, subsequently that was the base of the ideology of Pakistan. -

It will defend one particular prism for such an endeavour, that of the history of political emotions present in the books written by major politicians and intellectuals in late colonial India. Such means of access, we think, should explore both Urdu and English emotional components of the Aqeel Collection writings by using the latest research in the domain called ‘history of emotions.’ The article will provide some modest ideas on why and how the emotional intends to open up new ways of understanding the way politicians at that time approached and debated the future of British India into two independent nations, India and Pakistan. The article partly shows why emotional life shaped political action at the time, and how political emotions were, in turn, able to guide and strengthen the construction of post-imperialist, nationalist or supremacist ideologies that still persist today. -

Introduction: The legal cum judicial system in Pakistan is characterized by two outstanding features vis a vis Islamic law: firstly, the courts of the country implement the law laid down by the legislature, and secondly, if there is no law enacted on any point particularly with respect to personal matters the courts derive the rules of Islamic law from works of authority and put them into operation. The reason for such a mixture is embedded in the colonial period where the legal cum judicial system was structured as such. After the independence, Pakistan has retained that system on the same pattern albeit some cosmetic changes here and there. It must be admitted at the outset that the changes brought about by some legislative instruments are not mere cosmetic as they have reshaped the entire jurisprudence in that particular area, e.g. hudood laws. As a whole the above assertion with respect to dual characteristics of Pakistani legal cum judicial system is beyond any reproach. When someone is apprised of the above mentioned dual characteristic of the Pakistani legal cum judicial system, then it is natural to inquire what sort of source material is relied upon by the courts to find out an authentic view point of Islamic law on a particular issue. It is this important but unexplored question which has been made subject of analysis in this paper. For the purposes of exploring the frequently relied upon books of Islamic law by the courts, the author has carried out an inquisitive and careful analysis of the reported decisions of the superior judiciary in Pakistan.(1) After having found the frequently relied upon Islamic law books on the basis of their recurrent referencing in the reported cases, the paper has selected some of them for analysis in this paper. -

Reflections on the Transfer of Power and Jawaharlal Nehru Admiral of the Fleet The Earl Mountbatten of Burma KG PC GCB OM GCSI GCIE GCVO DSO FRS Trinity College, University of Cambridge - 14th November 1968. This is the second Nehru Memorial Lecture. At the suggestion of the former President of India the first was given, most appropriately, by the Master of Jawaharlal Nehru’s old College, Trinity. Lord Butler was born in India, the son of a most distinguished member of the Indian Civil Service, who was one of the most successful Governors. As Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for India he was one of those responsible for the truly remarkable 1935 Government of India Act, the Act which I used to speed up the transfer of power. Thus Lord Butler’ ties with India are strong and it not surprising that he gave such an excellent lecture, which has set such a high standard. He dealt faithfully with the life and career of Jawaharlal Nehru from his birth seventy-nine years ago this very day up to 1947. My fellow trustees of the Nehru Memorial Trust have persuaded me to deliver the second lecture. This seemed the occasion to give a connected narrative of the events leading up to the transfer of power in August 1947, and indeed to continue up to June 1948, when I ceased to be India’s first Constitutional Governor-General. It would have been nice to show how Nehru fitted into these events, but in the time available such a task soon proved to be out of the question, so I have deliberately confined myself to recalling the highlights of my Viceroyalty and to assessing Nehru’s relations to the principal men and events at the time, and to general reminiscences of him to illustrate the part he played up to the actual transfer of power.
