SCENE: The Grand Opening of the Castro Theater

TIME: 1972 Arriving at the movie we see Adolph Alcala selling tickets. We buy some candy from Mary Baker and start looking for seats with an usherette who turns out to be Geraldine Ingraham. Looking around, we see some familiar faces -- Shirley and Tommy West, and Margaret and Murphy Cates, quieting the children.

The feature film, "My Friend Irma," starts. We notice that Marie Wilson has retired and that Myrna Curry is playing the title role, with Blanche Alligood co-starring. After the feature, we see a sportsreel. Can- dido Barcelo, the Mad Russian, and Javier Oropeza, the Crazy Cuban, are the featured wrestlers. Dolores Villate and Lucy Gonzalez have just returned from the Olympics, where they walked off with all the honors. Clinton Warren is now an All-American basketball star. In the football world, AldoVidal and Anthony Niles are manag ing the Chicago Rams. Starring with the New York Yankees is Joe Ladd. A short on latest fashions is next. The fashions are from Clements Betancourt's "Chez Francois," where the fashion directors are Francine Johnson and Lorraine Curry. The charming dresses, styled by Georgia Bailey, are worn by Vita Barroso, Osa Branthoover, Gale Curry, Martha Perez, Barbara Jolly, Yvonne Camalier, and Faye Curry, all models from Betty Rowan's charm school. The make-up was by Imogene Stansell. The newsreel comes next with some very exciting local news. The two super markets in town, owned by Charles Baker and Alfred Link, are waging a price war. Scenes show eager house-wives Hortensia Calleja, Gloria Hyre, Faye Lowe, Peggy Paulk, Pat Lewin, Jean Pumphrey, Lillian Russell, Marie Spencer, Consuelo Valdez, and Dolores Valdez, shopping while prices are low.

Featured in the society news, Barbara Adams Van Allen gave a coming out party tor her daughter. En tertainment was furnished by performers from Basil's Stork Club. Dancers included Marlene Park, Camille Walterson, Nancy Brooks, Erme Valdes, Elizabeth Walterson, and Charles Taylor. Guests attending the party were: James Pettis, wealthy oil dealer; Joyce Lounders, Metropolitan opera singer; Claude Roberts, owner of the New York Times; Kermit Roberts, famous film star; Jack Wells, owner of Texaco Enterprises; Joel Sasnett, mill ionaire playboy; Robert Staves, Senator from New York; Shirley Thompson, President of the National BPW; Lor raine Warnock, Professor at the University of ; Doughtry Torano, President of Florida National Bank; Dee Touchton, Head of Religious Education at FSU; John Camfield, cattle rancher; George Gibson, owner of the Waldorf-Astoria; John McKillip and Harold McMasters, partners in a large ship construction industry; Mona Lee Honey, well known commercial artist; Donald Geek, motorcycle tycoon, Sherman McCaslin, who is replacing Red Skelton since he has retired; and the two famous mad scientists, Peter Hilton and Gene Lang. Covering the event were Alice Garcia, photographer, and Evelyn Nettles, reporter, from Frank Roberts' Key West Times. Also in the local news Philip Thompson dedicated his new church in a very impressive ceremony.

In the national news Carol Dalton, Chairman of the National Republican Convention, congratulates newly elected Presidentof the United States, Billy Roberts and Vice-President Robert Sawyer. Roberts has already appointed several cabinet members, Jeanne Canova, Secretary of the Treasury, Janice Bopst, Secretary of State, Shirley Weech, Secretary of Commerce, Jack Gibson, Secretary for Defense, Annette Johnson, Secretary of the Interior. New Ambassador to Spain is Doris Piarrot and Ambassador to Brazil, Robert Pages.

A musical short from Carnegie Hall featured Thomas Cornell, conductor, Betty Sheppard, pianist, and James Lyles, solo trombonist.

The house lights came on suddenly and Leo Tougas manager of the theatre announces that all medical personnel are wanted immediately for an emergency. We see Doctors Harden and Pritchard, with Nurses Reeves and Tift departing. Jack Ward, mortician, leaves, always looking for business.

After this interruption we see a film on newly developed passenger planes, with Ralph Betancourt as pilot and Jimmie Collins and Betty Cooper as airline hostesses. Colonel Dale Mitchell and Lts. Kathryn Brady, Maxine Hatley, and Dolores Taylor from the WAFS are among dignitaries present.

A short newsreel pictures one of the construction marvels of the century. Under the supervision of Paul Braun and Rex Weech, prominent engineers, Howard Matheny and Peter Knight, contractors, are building abridge from Key West to Havana. Seeing that the world is in the safe hands of the Seniors of '53 we rouse ourselves, put on our shoes and leave the theatre. Dolores Villate and Nancy Brooks
