By the time the British crushed the Chinese navy in the so-called Opium Wars, the country and its government were in a state of shock and incapable of quickly catching-up with Western Europe. In contrast with such a narrative, this dissertation shows that the Great Qing was in fact far more aware of global trends than has been commonly assumed. Against the backdrop of the long eighteenth century, the author explores the fundamental historical notions of the Chinese maritime world as a conceptual divide between an inner and an outer sea, whereby administrators, merchants, and intellectuals paid close and intense attention to coastal seawaters. Drawing on archival sources from China, Japan, Korea, Vietnam, and the West, the author argues that the connection between the Great Qing and the maritime world was complex and sophisticated. -

Performing Shakespeare in Contemporary Taiwan by Ya-hui Huang A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment for the requirements of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at the University of Central Lancashire Jan 2012 Abstract Since the 1980s, Taiwan has been subjected to heavy foreign and global influences, leading to a marked erosion of its traditional cultural forms. Indigenous traditions have had to struggle to hold their own and to strike out into new territory, adopt or adapt to Western models. For most theatres in Taiwan, Shakespeare has inevitably served as a model to be imitated and a touchstone of quality. Such Taiwanese Shakespeare performances prove to be much more than merely a combination of Shakespeare and Taiwan, constituting a new fusion which shows Taiwan as hospitable to foreign influences and unafraid to modify them for its own purposes. Nonetheless, Shakespeare performances in contemporary Taiwan are not only a demonstration of hybridity of Westernisation but also Sinification influences. Since the 1945 Kuomintang (Chinese Nationalist Party, or KMT) takeover of Taiwan, the KMT’s one-party state has established Chinese identity over a Taiwan identity by imposing cultural assimilation through such practices as the Mandarin-only policy during the Chinese Cultural Renaissance in Taiwan. Both Taiwan and Mainland China are on the margin of a “metropolitan bank of Shakespeare knowledge” (Orkin, 2005, p. 1), but it is this negotiation of identity that makes the Taiwanese interpretation of Shakespeare much different from that of a Mainlanders’ approach, while they share certain commonalities that inextricably link them. This study thus examines the interrelation between Taiwan and Mainland China operatic cultural forms and how negotiation of their different identities constitutes a singular different Taiwanese Shakespeare from Chinese Shakespeare. -

The Yunlin coast: a first-level 18 protection area in mid-west Taiwan, was then used as an example to illustrate the proposed design 19 criteria. The safety of the present coastal defenses and land use of the Yunlin coastal area was 20 assessed, and coastal protection measures for hazard prevention were proposed based on the 21 generated risk map. -

The Nationalist Party first defined the Incident as a rebellion by pro-Japanese forces and communist saboteurs. As the enemy of the Nationalist Party in China’s Civil War (1946-1949), the Chinese Communist Party initially interpreted the Incident as a Taiwanese fight for political autonomy in the party’s wartime propaganda, and then reinterpreted the event as an anti-Nationalist uprising under its own leadership. -

Lian Heng As a Linguist: a Critical Assessment

Introduction Lian Heng 連橫 (1878-1936; also known as Lian Yatang 連雅堂) is without doubt one the most important Taiwanese intellectuals of the Japanese colonial period. In recent years, academic interest in Lian and other well-known intellectuals of his time, such as Cai Peihuo 蔡培火, Jiang Weishui 蔣渭水, and Lin Xiantang 林獻堂, has grown considerably. As shown in previous biographical research on Lian Heng, his contributions are manifold and span diverse fields such as history, poetry, linguistics and journalism. It is in the nature of biographical studies to provide an all-encompassing account of historical personalities. However, such an endeavour for completeness runs the risk of neglecting, overstating or blurring particular aspects of a person’s accomplishments. This is certainly true of previous scholarship on Lian Heng’s linguistic studies. Referring to his Dictionary of Taiwanese (臺灣語典), scholars seem to agree that Lian was among Taiwan’s first linguists, or, in more elevated terms, the first rescuer of the Taiwanese language. As I will argue in this paper, however, the nature of Lian’s linguistic research has thus far not been adequately assessed and the general picture of the linguist Lian Heng remains vague. This paper will sharpen the picture by assessing the quantitative, qualitative, and ideological dimensions of Lian’s language studies. - 2 - 2. The Fiddlers of James Bay: Transatlantic Flows and Musical Indigenization among the James Bay Cree FRANCES WILKINS Abstract: Fiddle music and dancing have formed a major component of the social lives of the Algonquian 57-99. 40 (1): First Nations Cree population living in the James Bay region of Ontario and Québec since the instrument and its associated repertoire were introduced to the region by British (and most notably Scottish) employees of the Hudson’s Bay Company who travelled across the Atlantic on ships from the late 17th to the 20th MUSICultures century. Based on archival research and ongoing fieldwork in the region since 2011, this article aims to explore this transatlantic musical migration from the British Isles to James Bay and the reshaping of Scottish fiddle music and dance through indigenization and incorporation into the Cree cultural milieu. By examining this area of cultural flow, the article seeks to engage with current themes in ethnomusicology on the subject and add to the growing body of knowledge surrounding them. Résumé : La danse et le violon ont constitué une composante majeure de la vie sociale de la population algonquienne de la Première nation cri vivant dans la région de la baie James, en Ontario et au Québec, puisque cet instrument et le répertoire qui lui était associé furent introduits dans la région par les employés britanniques (et plus particulièrement écossais) de la Compagnie de la Baie d’Hudson, qui ont traversé l’Atlantique à partir de la fin du 17e siècle jusqu’au 20e siècle. Cet article, qui se fonde sur une recherche en archives et un travail de terrain continu dans la région depuis 2011, cherche à explorer cette migration musicale transatlantique depuis les îles britanniques jusqu’à la baie James, ainsi que le remodelage et la reconstitution de la musique au violon et de la danse écossaise par le biais de leur indigénisation dans le milieu culturel cri. -
