Committee Election Following the resignation of Publi- cations Chair Dr. Kevin Fu, the Ameri- can Classical League had a position to fill on the National Committee at this year's convention in North Carolina. Caitlin Johnston (below), the interim publications chair, ran for the position. She was successful in her campaign and will now serve a five-year term as publications chair. The Junior, Senior and American At nationals this year an election was held, like always, to determine the Classical Leagues, Committee, and 2012-2013 NJCL Board. There were eleven candidates for seven positions on the Board are grateful for Fu's years of board. For president we had Zach Mellender (NE) and Caroline Tucker (IN). The service and would like to offer their candidates for first vice-president were Kati Krchnavy (ND) and Peter Chung sincere well wishes in his future en- (IL). There was only one candidate for the office of second vice-president: Danny deavors. Trunzo (WI). The two communication coordinator candidates were Molly Hem- enway (VA) and Meghana Vagwala (MA), and parliamentarian candidates were Jackson Myers (TN) and James Dow (GA). The one candidate for historian was Janet Chen (CO), and finally, for editor there was one candidate: Trace Turner (TX). These were the candidates decided upon by the Nominations Committee. After Nom Com, fierce campaigning ensued for all the offices. Almost immedi- ately signs, chalk, and stickers started appearing all over Wake Forest University. The JCLers were buzzing about the candidates, whether about each person specifi- cally or about their qualifications. Each night at the bazaar, all JCLers could find the candidates campaigning hard from table to table. The next day a “Meet the Candidates,” in which many proactive JCLers were able to approach the candidates and inquire upon their qualifications, was held near the food court. After lunch that day came the general assembly during which each candidate gave a speech summarizing his or her qualifications and campaign. The candidates continued to campaign and anticipated the results of the election, which would be announced the following day at the general assembly. At the end of the fourth NJCL General Assembly, Sam Buck, 2011-2012 NJCL Parliamentarian, announced the 2012-2013 NJCL Board. Congratulations to Caro- line Tucker, president; Peter Chung, first VP; Danny Trunzo, second VP; Molly Hemenway, communications coordinator; James Dow, parliamentarian; Janet Chen, historian; and Trace Turner, editor. Everyone is excited about the new board and wishes them good luck in the coming year. NJCL Bylaws Amended at 2012 Convention Delegates at the recent 2012 NJCL Convention at Wake Forest University passed an amendment to the NJCL Bylaws. Article III previously assigned a set subscription price for the Torch: U.S. at $1.50. The bylaw was amended to allow flex- ibility on the price. It now reads as follows: "After national dues have been paid, the individual subscription rate to the Torch:U.S. shall be determined annually by the American Classical/ National Junior Classical League office based on the cost of printing, production, and postal fees." The rationale for the change was based on increasing cost of production and postage. It was unwise to have a specific price set in our bylaws. The current postage rate for a single issue of the Torch:U.S. is between $1.25 and $2.48 depending on weight. $1.50 does not cover the cost of the postage for the annual subscription. Postage rates are expected to increase in the future. Also, the cost of printing should be considered. By removing the specific price in the Bylaws, the ACL/JCL office may adjust fees as needed. Perched atop Benson like the eye of Sauron atop Barad-dûr, the National Senior Classical League oversaw the proceedings of the 59th National Junior Classical League Convention with a watchful gaze and its usual iron fist. In its benevolence and knowledge that JCLers without purpose are lost and without direction, the SCL once again fulfilled its self-proclaimed goal of aiding in the functions of the Junior Classical League through various events, publications, and competitions. As President Dan Garrett reported at the final general assembly of the convention, the SCL once again had been the guiding force that made Olympika possible; controlled auditions, practices, staffing, acting, sound and lighting that were all such an integral part of a wildly successful That's Entertainment; produced, published, and distributed the Convention Ear to all conventioneers; helped the dances run smoothly; moderated and oversaw all the Ludi, from soccer to chess; and gave all the outgoing high school seniors an opportunity to become slashers and eventually enter into the full power of the Senior Classical League. Oh, and they also destroyed the NJCL officers in the traditional NSCL-NJCL kickball game – this year, the loss was so severe that one of the JCL officers is rumored to have defected to the SCL following the crushing defeat. So, to the NSCL do all convention-goers owe their thanks, just as to SCL do all slashers owe their allegiance. All JCLers look forward to being guided by the loving, iron fist of the Senior Classical League in years to come. The fingers that make up that fist, or the new NSCL Board, are pictured below: (from right) President Ethan Kraft, Vice President Brendon Walsh, Secretary Bri Forney, Treasurer -Kurt Ristroph, NSCL Editor 2012-2013 NSCL Editor Ristroph, -Kurt SCL Report Taylor Locks, Parliamentarian Elliot Wilson, Editor Kurt Ristroph, and Historian Hannah Carlson. Torch:U.S. sponsors/book awards 9 Fall 2012 Spectacular Sponsors Mr. Randy Fields, a teacher at The Walker School, Mr. Brian Compton, a teacher at Archbishop Moeller High School, and Ms. Gale Stone, a teacher at Madison West School, have been recognized as “Summa Cum Laude Junior Classical League Sponsors” by the National JCL organization. The announcement was made at the sponsors’ banquet during the 59th annual National JCL Convention held at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, NC. This “Master JCL Sponsor” designation is based upon extraordinary service to the JCL on the local, state, and national levels. Teachers who achieved this distinction have been sponsors of local JCL chapters for 12 or more years. They have performed distinguished service to their respective state JCL chapters through service as state chair, sponsoring student state officers, and/or hosting state JCL functions. In addition, these sponsors have attended at least 10 National JCL Conventions where they have presented workshops, sponsored national student officers, and/or chaired a national competition. Over the past ten years less than 100 sponsors from the entire National JCL organization have been so honored.

Bookends of the JCL presented with Book Awards

he book awards of the Junior Classical League are awarded to people Twho have truly enriched the JCL experience throughout their years. This year, Kathy Elifrits of Kentucky won the Mildred Sterling Award, which was created in 1997 and named for Mildred Sterling, a Latin teacher from Waco, Texas. Mrs. Sterling attended every NJCL Convention from the first one in 1954 all the way up through 1996, and she even attended the 1953 planning meeting for that first convention. The award honors those persons who have attended many NJCL conventions and who have distinguished themselves with dedication to NJCL during their time here. Mrs. Elifrits has co-chaired three NJCL conventions: 1995, 2005 in Missouri, and 2011 in Kentucky, and is now retired, after 44 years of teaching Steve Gentle of Ohio won the Ed Phinney Book Award, created in 1989 and named after Ed Phinney, a Classics professor at the University of Massachusetts Amherst and a former President of the American Classical League. Dr. Phinney’s contributions to classical studies and to the teaching of Latin and Greek were exemplary. This award honors those who have made significant contributions to the NJCL. Mr. Gentle has attended 26 NJCL conventions and served for ten years as publications chair on the National Committee. Fall 2012 Fall Torch:U.S. 10 longtime attendees

Entertainment 2012-2013 Turner, -Trace Editor NJCL That's Sunday: everyone’s favorite night had almost arrived as unofficial spirit competitions broke out between Florida, Texas, and Virginia just minutes before the doors to Wait Chapel opened. Finally, the giant doors opened and a flood of JCLers stormed through in order to get the best possible seats for the well-anticipated show. People scrambled to find places and waited for the show to begin. Energy levels were still very high, to the point that the crowd broke out into Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believing” for a few verses. The newly elected officers tried to start a round of “Call Me Maybe”, but it quickly puttered out into awkwardness. Then, the show began. The theme of this year’s That’s Entertainment was an Olympic one, with two newscasters as the emcees. The SCLers did a wonderful job controlling the show and performing their skits. Some favorites were Dora the JCL Explorer, 10 ways to JCL-up the Olympics, and the Drag Race. In Dora the JCL Explorer, two JCLers, late for spirit, are very lost in Benson until Dora arrives to guide the way with her sidekick Caligula. On the way to Wait Chapel the group encounters many dangers, such as the man-eating “Madnolia” trees mentioned in the Convention Ear earlier that week. Eventually the group makes it to GA and performs the “we did it” dance only to be admonished by the booming voice that there is “NO JUMPING IN WAIT CHAPEL.” Later in the night came the skit done by the 2011-2012 NJCL Officers. In this skit, a mix of Lord of the Rings, Ancient Greece, and more, the officers discovered a van that traveled through time, bringing them to Ancient Greece and Middle-Earth before being stolen by the Dark Lord SauBron James. In order to recover it, the officers had to take SauBron’s championship ring and throw it into Mt. Doom. There were ordeals and plot twists, such as NJCL Editor Kurt Ristroph sacrificing himself for the team before being brought back as NSCL Editor, Second VP Akhila Ananthram almost being tossed, and Historian Emily Chang taking a red-eye shot of the eye of SauBron. Aside from the hilarity of the SCL, the JCLers brought their best talents to the stage. Some crowd favorites included Emily Jones (TX) and Michael Keller (IN) who, while wearing neon paint, played two buckets (also painted) like drums under black lights. Another was the synchronizing dancing from Jeff Hochstein, William Groble, Michael Lillen, Josh Cohen, and Nathan Huber (IL). A very interesting yet amazing act was done by Kim Fiore and Sara Meadow (FL), who turned off the lights and danced while wearing glow sticks in the shapes of human stick figures. Divya Narayanan (TX) sang "Rumor Has It" byAdele to great effect, and Parth Viswanathan and Amanda Liew (GA) performed a piece on piano and guitar with accompanying vocals. Matt Anderson (FL) performed a song by Led Zeppelin to the enjoyment of all, and Lauren Pierce (TN) sang and performed an original song on piano. Three Ohioans, Allison Keo, Bhavani Srinivas, and Anav Soud, who collaborated to bring to life a traditional Indian dance accompanied by piano. Lastly, Jacqueline Spence (NJ) enraptured the crowd with her performace of "I Want to Hold Your Hand" by the Beatles. But like every That’s Entertainment there are winners, each of whom was awarded a medal and a cash prize. Taking Bronze was Kevin Wang (TN), who performed on the piano. Receiving the Silver medal, we had Kerry Burke-McCloud (FL) for his dramatic “Confrontation” from the musical Jekyll & Hyde. And finally, taking home the gold medal we had Seth Junot & Thomas Martin (LA) doing a song with bagpipes and a piano. And so concluded this year’s That’s Entertainment. It was filled with a lot of energy and great amounts of talent, truly living up to the Olympics’ motto of “Faster, Higher, Stronger.”

This year, for the very first time at convention, JCLers took on not one, not two, but three different service projects.

One was a Coin War with a twist. We used the regular point system, where coins are positive points and bills are negative points. The officer who had the MOST points was pied and selected the organization that the donations went to. The money was supposed to be split between the organization chosen by the winning officer and the SCL scholarship fund, but Mr. Tony Martin, the SCL advisor, kindly gifted the money to the chosen charity of the JCLers. Your editor, Kurt, (AKA Ed and Captain Kurtamen) received 28,625 points, placing him in first place and making him Lastly, I’d like to recognize the winners of the the recipient of a lovely pudding-filled pie to the Community Service Award. Valete, vomnes.

O citizens, fearless daily warriors of the cause of Latin and the classics in today's world! This past year, the Justice Classical League has watched over the NJCL with a fond and familiar gaze; your seven officers have battled tirelessly against the forces of evil that would seek to destroy our way of life, and we remain non-extinct. The NJCL is currently safe, but my team and I are leaving on our most dangerous mission of all: to become members of the top-secret SCL black ops corps of Latin Secret Superheroes. This occult cause demands that we leave our posts, and so we say valete to you all.

But have no fear, brave soldiers of Latin. Though our superhuman abilities of going an entire year in office without sleep, brainstorming officer skits and sitting without fidgeting (for the most part, and only before Spirit prizes) on stage are no longer able to aid and abet this great club, know that we have entrusted the NJCL into a new Justice Classical League: one that may, in time, learn how to take over nine thousand pictures each day of convention, become worthy to lift and thus wield the Gavel of Supreme Parliamentary Order, master the elusive and mysterious ways of the first, second, and third persons in tandem with breaking the fourth wall and making continuous written puns, and bring balance to the world of the classics in today's society. They will learn, as we did, to go the distance, to go with Obi-Wan and become a Jedi like their fathers, and to walk the path of the ninJCLer. The new board will discover firsthand the dangers in eating Mr. Tom Reed's entire bag of candy and will know by experience not that one does not simply plan NJCL Convention 2013. Follow them, aid them, and rally behind them; your new board is eager and capable, and, after all, anyone can be a hero, if they truly have passion.
