GREEK MYTHS FROM PAGE TO SCREEN ATHENS, KEA, & LAVRIO, GREECE – SUMMER 2020 WHAT: A four-week intensive writing/travel/production experience, this course is an upper division Dodge Elective and a Global Studies GE credit. We will study Greek mythology and transform traditional myths into four short film scripts to be produced on location in Greece. Both Undergrads and Grads are welcome.

Part 1: The first two weeks of the class will be taught at Dodge College. Under the instruction of Dr. Eileen Jankowski, professor in Wilkinson College, the students will delve into Greek history, culture, and myth. After reading about and discussing key gods and goddesses in the Greek pantheon, viewing the History Channel's "Gods and Goddesses" and clips from the films "Troy" and "The Odyssey", and visiting the Getty Villa, the students will develop four scripts.
We will break into two production groups composed of five students each (director, cinematographer, assistant camera, sound, and editor). We also will have one producer and four actors for a total company of fifteen students. Each group will prepare two original scripts modeled on the 3-2-1 concept (three pages, two characters, one location) and complete pre-production and rehearsals. Since we will be in Greece, we will adjust the one location model to include three locations for each film, one location per day.
Part 2: The second two weeks of the course will be taught in a 18 night, 19 day stay in Greece. We begin our Greek adventure exploring Athens to get a hands-on cultural background for the myths we learned about as well as modern Greek culture. We will have three days in Athens for cultural and historical exploration, visiting the Acropolis, Ancient Agora, Acropolis Museum, Plaka, and more.
Next, we will ferry to the Island of Kea for five days of production, shooting in the port city of Ioulis and the mountain town Korissia. There we will experience island life including the relaxing beaches, narrow village roads, and historic landmarks such as the port and the famous Lion statue, carved prior to 600 BCE.
Lastly, we will return to the mainland for six days to conclude our shoots in the historic port town of Lavrio, where we will visit the ancient theatre of Thorikos (oldest existing amphitheater in the world), the mineralogical museum, the archeological museum, the Laiki open-air market, the port, the remains of the silver mining industry preserved in the technological park, the Temple of Poseidon in Sounion and more. COST: The course fee will be approx. $2,518-$2,814 (final amount subject to booking of travel arrangements and exchange rates, by April 2020). Graduate: Once a graduate student completes 15 credits at Chapman, he/she becomes eligible for a 3-credit tuition waiver for a Travel Course irrespective of the number of credits required in the degree. DEPOSITS: If accepted into the course, you must make a $500 deposit with a credit card online before March 15th 2020. This is a non-refundable deposit that will reserve your spot in the course. If admitted students do not put down their deposit by the deadline, they will lose their spot and I will then admit students from the waitlist. With only 20 spots available, I expect this to be a competitive course and to secure your spot you must deposit ASAP.
FORMS: In addition to the deposit, students must complete a variety of required forms for the university online through Global Gateway, which you will receive via email after the course is fully enrolled.
