Dear Mr President,
I have the honor and pleasure to inform you that in 2020, the International Delphic Council willorganize the First European Delphiad.
In this context it would be of prime importance to obtain the support of the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of the Council of Europe in the form of a patronage, as it has already been granted by HE. Mr. Antonio TAJANI, the President of European Par liament and H.E. Mr. Karl-Heinz LAMBERTZ, President of the European Committee of Honorary President the Regions. Our Athenian colleague, Mr. Pyrrhus MERCOURIS, was able to win Mr. Spyros MERCOURISt (Greece) DEPAN (a network of Greek cities) for the implementation. Amphictyony (Executive Board) It is our aim to use the European Delphiads for the long-term strengthening, cohesion Ms Prof Divina BAUTISTA and pacification of Europe. In order to reach as many regions and countries of Europe President (Phtlipptnes) as possible, we need the support of the presidents of the leading European institutions. In 1985, on the initiative of Melina MERCOURI, the European Capital of Culture was established in Greece. In the meantime, the EU Commission has granted the respec tive hosts basic institutional funding — a model that is also recommended for the Euro pean Delphiads.

In order to make the citizens of Europe aware of their common history, joint action through facts and emotions is needed.
We all know the sobering premise of the markets: • Without advertising for a product — no buyers (or analogue) • Without advertising for Europe — no Europeans
It is important here to provide information on forthcoming European initiatives in which the regions can participate directly — as a call to their citizens to engage in a dialogue on the arts that brings them together. Dedicated, written patronage by European and regional institutions is a significant sign of a strong Europe. They form the basis for jointly addressing and activating sponsor networks in a targeted manner.
Openness, cultural encounters, even with (designated) opponents, can resolve conflicts and strengthen peace — this was already proven by the Amphictyony. In ancient Greece, after three “HolyWars” over the possession of the sanctuary it hosted the Del phic Games and learned to share and use DELPHI together. Thus the Amphictyony became the forerunner of the UNO.
Your patronage would be of special importance as you close the gap between the Eu ropean Parliament, EU Commission and the Council of Europe in your important posi tions as President of the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of the Council of Europe.
We very much hope that you willshare our thoughts and thus agree to the granting of your patronage as a visible sign for Europe. Only together can we successfully tackle an institutional cell division of the continent and bring the cities, regions and countries of Europe closer together.

I am grateful for today’s telephone conversation and the interest expressed and I would like to inform you that the International Delphic Council willorganise the first European Delphiad 2020 in Greece next year.
Our colleague in Athens, Mr. Pyrrhus Mercouris, was able to win DEPAN (a network of Greek cities) for the implementation. Our aim is to use the European Delphiads in the long term to strengthen, cohere and pacify Europe. In order to reach as many regions and countries of Europe as possible, we need the support of the presidents of the leading European institutions.

Dear Secretary-General,
Thank you for your letter of 1 April 2017 seeking the patronage of the European Parliament for the first European Deiphiads, to be held in Delphi in August 2018.
I was very happy to hear about this interesting initiative that aims to bring together European artists and creative professionals to showcase European talent and cultural diversity, to raise awareness of European identity and our shared cultural heritage, to strengthen the feeling of European belonging and to promote EU founding values such as intercultural dialogue, solidarity, cooperation, dialogue and mutual understanding. I particularly appreciate the choice of the place for this first edition: Delphi, ancient ‘centre of the world’, cradle of Greek civilisation and culture, where the Pythian Games, a precursor to the modern Olympic Games, took place, and which intends to become, through this initiative, a strong symbol of a Europe united in diversity.
The European Parliament is convinced’ that cultural heritage — both tangible and intangible — plays a significant role in creating, safeguarding and promoting European culture and values, as well as national, regional, local and individual identities, and the modern identity of the people of Europe. I am therefore very pleased that, thanks to the efforts of the European Parliament, the European Year of Cultural Heritage has officially been scheduled for 2018.
Given the clear European dimension of your initiative, it is with great pleasure that I grant your event the European Parliament’s patronage2.

The President of the European Parliament, Mr Antonio Tajani, has received your further letter of 17 October 2018 on the subject of the European Deiphiad.
Please rest assured that your letter has been read attentively and its contents duly noted.
The Citizens’ Enquiries Unit of the European Parliament has been asked to reply on the President’s behalf.
As you know, President Tajani was very pleased to grant the Patronage of the European Parliament to the European Deiphiad 2018 as it has a clear European cultural dimension and is in line with the values that we commonly espouse. The success of European cultural initiatives such as yours are especially important in this, the Year of European Cultural Heritage, and as we approach the European elections of 2019, when the citizens of Europe will once again renew their engagement with Europe’s values rooted in democracy, freedoms, and rights.
As President Tajani affirmed in his speech on cultural heritage in June 2018, ‘when we talk about cultural heritage we mean not just our past but also, and above all, our future’. The engagement of the European Delphiad in bringing forward projects for young people such as the ‘Deiphic Art Wall’ is significant in connecting our common pasts to our common present and to our common futures.
The European Parliament, in its Resolution of September 2015 on an integrated approach to cultural heritage for Europe, has stated that it ‘encourages the use of cultural heritage as an educational tool to deal with societal issues in order to bring people living in Europe closer together’.
It is therefore welcome to see the various initiatives that the International Delphic Council has been taking since your previous correspondence. President Tajani continues to be pleased that the European Parliament is associated with and provides moral support to these initiatives.
It may be of mutual interest for the International Deiphic Council to engage with the European Parliament’s Committee on Culture, after the latter is re-constituted following the European elections, in order to explore ways of further promoting and disseminating the results of your initiatives.

At a Glance Brief Summary
Vision • To set a practical floor for arts, cultures, education and its protagonists like artists, teachers, jurors, politicians public and private officials, sponsorship, agents, media and communication. • To set a platform similar to the Olympic Games for sports, bringing people together across the globe through enthusiasm, the Delphic Games are to unite people of all nations and cultures through fascination for the arts. • To provide human beings of all ages all over the world access to culture and art as a basis for emotional understanding among each other.
History • The Delphic Games took place parallel to Olympic Games in ancient Greece and were celebrated one year prior to the Olympic Games for about 1000 years - until both games were banned as heathen Games in 394 BC. • The Olympic Games for sport revived with the founding of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) 1894 in Paris — 1500 years after the ban. • With the founding of the International Delphic Council (IDC) in Berlin in 1994— 1600 years after the ban — the Delphic Games for Arts and Culture were revived.
Aim • To make Art and Culture an important part of our everyday life • To change our social behaviour based on awareness of other cultures • To integrate Art and Culture in the life-long education process
