You’re confronted with all the music in the world but what the hell are you supposed to listen to? Somebody tell me! What’s good? Larry Stein, Director Steinhardt School of New York University

What is Radio? - Two Definitions

It just means you listen to audio passively, linearly. In the old days a radio station was the frequency you tuned into for a programmer’s choice of airwaves. Now it could be a playlist somebody created, or a pre-programmed genre channel. A playlist is a radio. Paul Brenner, President of NextRadio

Curation, taste-making, personalization - whatever you want to call the act of somebody plopping songs in front of you, the music equivalent of sitting down and asking for the chef’s recommendations without bothering to glance at the menu - is the future of music. It is the centerpiece of a music, in people’s private homes, in public spaces, in social gatherings. And if you ask anyone from the older, airwaves-loving generation: That’s also exactly what it’s always been. Amy X. Wang, QUARTZ Digital News Outlet Groovefnder's Extra - Radio July 2018

Why Radio is important for Artists and Labels? Groovefnder's Extra - Radio July 2018 Groovefnder's Extra - Radio July 2018

Let's talk about Internet-Radio

To make it easy: There are three types of stations

• AM/FM-Stations which also run a digital platform • Online-Only-Stations, which are run as a business or part of a business • Online-Only-Stations, which are not run as a business, but for the love of music and (sometimes) the technique. People do it because they can and because they love it; online made it easy and relatively cheap – compared to 30 years ago. Groovefnder's Extra - Radio July 2018

The one's independent Artists and Labels deal with mostly are

• Online-Only-Stations, which are run as a business • Online-Only-Stations, which are run for the love of music only

For Marketeers, the people who work with the budgets and try to find their ideal customers, Internet-Radio-Stations in the way we know them (and love them) are just one thing - a nightmare. These people rely on statistics and data to see where to place their adverts or their marketing best. And there are simply NO statistics >>> Groovefnder's Extra - Radio July 2018

That also means: If you are an independent artist or label, who works on his own marketing, and you try to find out, how you can push your newest release on which internet-radio-stations a little bit, you often just have to go how you feel. You mostly rely on your personal contacts and your social media or virtual contacts and the observations you make on different social media platforms. If you want to make it a bit more like a plan, there is not much (yet) how to figure that out.

And again, it is obviously important to keep in mind, that there are big differences in certain countries. >>> Groovefnder's Extra - Radio July 2018

For Soulmusic-Artists, as an example, it must be heaven to feel all that love they get from European and especially UK Online-Only Stations and presenters. There is a good example imho, to illustrate it. It is discussed on and on especially on Facebook: Charts

Charts is still a word. It leads us back to times, when we stood in front of a record shop to take a view on the newest poster. And to have a #1 in which chart ever may give an artist a good feeling. There is a lot of respect for those who invest serious time to put something like a chart together. But... >>> Groovefnder's Extra - Radio July 2018

… what does a chart really mean for an artist, if

you mostly do not know on which basis a chart is built. Are they built on numbers or on personal preferences? Is anyone counting the amount of plays or listeners of a certain tune? And if, how does he technically do that? Is there one or more expert(s) who put it together? And if, who are those experts? How many people do these charts reach? Are they a reliable source to measure success? No, they aren't.

Don't get me wrong please. I have most respect for people who invest much time to put a chart together and make people happy. This is a marketers-view Groovefnder's Research #4 July 2018
