Dr. Özdemir KOÇAK The Geopolitics of Mid West Anatolia (Phrygia) in the View of Ancient Resources Tezin Adı ABSTRACT Phrygia is one of the distinguished centers that contribute a lot to the geopolitical position of Anatolia. From the beginning of the civilization line to the today’s world, the region of Phrygia has always been the focus point of different civilizations. This power depends on its geopolitical position. In the 1st millennium B.C. , it was the last point of the East that extends the West during the mutual interaction of civilizations and it was also the first step point of the West on the location of the East concerning the civilization movements extending from the West to the East. There is an essence of Phrygia in many European values and norms. Phrygia didn’t only serve as a bridge but also blend the Eastern values and presented to the West as a new form. The East was the source of inspiration. On the contrary movements from the West to the East, Phrygia again became the indispensable location. The geopolitical power of Phrygia obtained through the exceptional location of itself has been carrying on its “sustainability” in two points. The first one is the economical, financial and transportation power based on its geographical factors that emerged in its own period. The region that has been the cradle of many civilizations vii and the geopolitical power related with this location still maintain their importance in the borders of Turkish Republic. This region is an indispensable location of Turkish Republic with the contribution of economical, financial and transportation powers that extend to the west. The second one is, the mythological tales of Phrygia spreading to the West through the Greece and then to the entire world. This literal power has been represented in many distinguished authors, poets and artists’ works and still carries on its sustainability. viii KISALTMALAR AAG. Assocaiton of American Geographers. • Hadrian and the Greek East
HADRIAN AND THE GREEK EAST: IMPERIAL POLICY AND COMMUNICATION DISSERTATION Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of the Ohio State University By Demetrios Kritsotakis, B.A, M.A. * * * * * The Ohio State University 2008 Dissertation Committee: Approved by Professor Fritz Graf, Adviser Professor Tom Hawkins ____________________________ Professor Anthony Kaldellis Adviser Greek and Latin Graduate Program Copyright by Demetrios Kritsotakis 2008 ABSTRACT The Roman Emperor Hadrian pursued a policy of unification of the vast Empire. After his accession, he abandoned the expansionist policy of his predecessor Trajan and focused on securing the frontiers of the empire and on maintaining its stability. Of the utmost importance was the further integration and participation in his program of the peoples of the Greek East, especially of the Greek mainland and Asia Minor. Hadrian now invited them to become active members of the empire. By his lengthy travels and benefactions to the people of the region and by the creation of the Panhellenion, Hadrian attempted to create a second center of the Empire. Rome, in the West, was the first center; now a second one, in the East, would draw together the Greek people on both sides of the Aegean Sea. Thus he could accelerate the unification of the empire by focusing on its two most important elements, Romans and Greeks. Hadrian channeled his intentions in a number of ways, including the use of specific iconographical types on the coinage of his reign and religious language and themes in his interactions with the Greeks. In both cases it becomes evident that the Greeks not only understood his messages, but they also reacted in a positive way.

The aS trap Of Western Anatolia And The Greeks Abstract This dissertation explores the extent to which Persian policies in the western satrapies originated from the provincial capitals in the Anatolian periphery rather than from the royal centers in the Persian heartland in the fifth ec ntury BC. I begin by establishing that the Persian administrative apparatus was a product of a grand reform initiated by Darius I, which was aimed at producing a more uniform and centralized administrative infrastructure. In the following chapter I show that the provincial administration was embedded with chancellors, scribes, secretaries and military personnel of royal status and that the satrapies were periodically inspected by the Persian King or his loyal agents, which allowed to central authorities to monitory the provinces. In chapter three I delineate the extent of satrapal authority, responsibility and resources, and conclude that the satraps were supplied with considerable resources which enabled to fulfill the duties of their office. After the power dynamic between the Great Persian King and his provincial governors and the nature of the office of satrap has been analyzed, I begin a diachronic scrutiny of Greco-Persian interactions in the fifth century BC.

  • New Research in the Northern Necropolis of Hierapolis, Phrygia (Turkey)
New research in the Northern necropolis of Hierapolis, Phrygia (Turkey) Anna Anguissola, Silvana Costa, Antonio Monticolo University of Pisa Italian Archaeological Mission at Hierapolis Since 1988, Hierapolis of Phrygia has been included in UNESCO’s list of mixed natural and cultural world heritage sites. Hierapolis is situated on a calcareous platform some 350 metres above sea level, on the western brink of the Anatolian plateau. It covers an area of ca. 65 ha and is surrounded by large cemeteries, built throughout the Hellenistic and imperial Roman periods. Some 600 monumental tombs with a remarkable variety of architectural types have been identified. Only a few of them have been either excavated or presented in scholarly publications. 1. The project This project (2017-2020) is the first coordinated effort to examine the funerary landscape of Hierapolis from a historical and social perspective. Our research focuses on the largest and the most complex of the cemeteries at Hierapolis, the northern Necropolis. Firstly, we aim to account for the general layout of the burial ground, as related to its topography, organizing principles, access and circulation, continuity and changes. Secondly, we wish to assess how individual monuments and sarcophagi contributed to the articulation of the funerary space by focusing on aspects such as material, techniques, visibility, use, and ownership of these objects. Thirdly, we integrate the study of funerary inscriptions as a means to gather information not only on specific persons, their status and lineage, but also on systems of belief, social symbols, memory, identity, social and political organization. 2. Area and funerary typologies We focus on the area between Tombs 156 and 162, including some 20 monuments and dozens of sarcophagi along the main road to Tripolis on the Meander.

  • The Two Republics Or Rome and the United States of America
/ ? THE TWO REPUBLICS ROM AND THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA BY ALONZO T. JONES No past event has any intrinsic importance. The knowledge of it is valu- able only as it leads us to form just calculations with respect to the future. — MACAULAY. REVIEW AND HERALD PUBLISHING CO., BATTLE CREEK, MICH.; CHICAGO, ILL.; TORONTO, ONT.; ATI.ANTA, GA. 1891. COPYRIGHTED 1891, BY A. T. JONES. The principle of Rome in all its phases is that religion and government are inseparable.
