Midsummer Prog Festival 2019, 22.06.19, Valkenburg, Openluchttheater Valkenburg aan de Geul ist ein kleines romantisches Städtchen, kurz hinter der deutsch-niederländischen-Grenze, auf dem Wege von Aachen nach Maastricht. Unter Proggern hat die knapp 17.000 Einwohner zählende Gemeinde mittlerweile einen gewissen Bekanntheitsgrad erreicht, da das dortige Openluchttheater seit 2017 die Heimstätte des jährlichenMidsummer Prog Festivals ist. Bisher war ich von den ersten beiden Editionen des Festivals vollkommen begeistert. In diesem Jahr allerdings machten sich bei mir im Vorfeld der Veranstaltung erste größere Zweifel bemerkbar. Grund hierfür waren die von den Organisatoren verpflichteten Bands. Im ersten Jahr seines Bestehens startete das Midsummer Prog Festival mit drei der angesagtesten Bands des Modern Prog & New Artrock: die zu alten Stärken zurückgekehrtenPain of Salvation, die atmosphärischen Gazpacho aus Norwegen, sowie, als Headliner, die ehemaligen Gothic Metaller von Anathema. Komplettiert wurde das Billing durchIamthemorning , deren Album „Lighthouse“ gerade erst bei den PROG-Awards den Titel Album des Jahres gewonnen hatte sowie den australischen Senkrechtstartern von Caligula’s Horse. Ein Konzept, welches auch im darauffolgenden in ähnlicher Form wiederholt worden war. Neben zwei weniger bekannten Bands als Opener, den niederländischen Lesoir und Lazuli aus Frankreich, sowie den sich immer wieder neu erfindenden Lokalmatadoren von The Gathering gabenen sich auch 2018 wieder zwei Speerspitzen innovativer progressiver Musik die Klinke in die Hand: neben den britischen Amplifier standen die vom Schicksal arg gebeutelten Riverside aus Warschau als krönender Headliner auf der Bühne. Ende 2018 begann sich allerdings abzuzeichnen, dass das Midsummer Prog seinen Character leicht verändern würde. Viele bekannte Namen waren im Vorfeld gehandelt worden, doch standen angesagte Bands wie Haken, Tesseract, Leprous oder Soen letztendlich nicht auf dem Billing von Valkenburg, sondern auf jener des neu entstandenen Prognosis Festivals in Eindhoven. -
