4 PERTH FOOTBALL CLUB FROM THE FOOTBALL OPERATIONS MANAGER Dale Ballantyne “Our continued improvement has not occurred through luck. Our senior coach, Earl Spalding has driven the football department, playing group and senior coaches to produce increased effort, professionalism and intensity.”

An exciting, progressive, yet unfulfilled season at senior level on the football field at Perth Football Club in 2019. A great start on field at League level set us up for our best season for some time and having some depth in our player list not seen for a number of years allowed our Reserves to also push for a finals berth.

Stability in our off-field personnel was a welcome change form the previous season. Our main focus was to find a replacement for Ben Tuene, our Head of Strength & Conditioning. Undertaking a robust recruitment strategy, we were very happy to have Saia Wood-Halafihi step into our football club in his first senior role. Saia, along with Harry and Evan created a fantastic environment for the players to grow.

The medical team was once again fantastically lead by Charlotte and Hayley. The training staff, along with Dr Joe Henry and Brett Fletcher our physio displayed professionalism, knowledge and experience which is appreciated and welcomed by the players and staff. The Perth FC is very happy and lucky to have you on our staff.

To all the coaching staff, including the volunteers who put in hours of work during the season, once again I have enjoyed working with you, as I know the players have enjoyed having you involved. It is never easy to maintain your energy and enthusiasm over the course of a long season, however, you have all managed to do that and it has been a great pleasure to have been able to achieve what we have with you. To departing coaches Darren Kowal, Kristian Leeson and Bruce Fraser, we appreciate the time you have put into the Perth FC.

Once again, I would also like to acknowledge the Monday morning crew, who are at the club every week, tidying up to ensure that the club looks good. Your work is much appreciated.

Team managers, chairman of selectors, boardmen, runners and all other game day helpers, you make my life so much easier and I trust you had an enjoyable season.

Our continued improvement has not occurred through luck. Our senior coach, Earl Spalding has driven the football department, playing group and senior coaches to produce increased effort, professionalism and intensity. Earl is a focused individual, who has a great passion for the Perth FC, which will ultimately provide sustained success at all levels. To the senior staff and reserves coach Andrew Panetta, thank you for supporting Earl and myself. We ask for a lot of your time and you are always forthcoming with ideas and are a great team.

In his first year as club captain, Corey Yeo learnt a few things and also showed some tremendous signs of leadership. To Yeoy and the leadership group, thank you for your support and input into how the club is perceived by all football stakeholders and club supporters, members and sponsors. We will continue to work on leadership, values and standards. Clubs do not necessarily function in harmony at all times, however, I feel that the issues we deal with at Perth are now relatively small ones and we deal with these in a controlled and mature way thanks to the work of the leadership group. Thank you to the Board for your support. It is always a tougher time when there is change. The support for the football department has not waived and with this in place, we will improve again in 2020.

Finally, to all the front office staff, Ryan, Lance, Archie along with our Talent team of Trevor and Michelle, I still believe we punch well above our weight in what we achieve and how we work as a team.

PERTH FOOTBALL CLUB 5 FROM THE SENIOR COACH Earl Spalding

“Whilst a couple of key inclusions will help with our upward trajectory, the main source of our improvement will continue to come from within.”

How you judge our 2019 season will depend a bit on whether you’re a glass half full or glass half empty type of person. It would be easy to dwell on the disappointment of the last game against Peel and the fall away in results from our excellent 5-0 start to the season, but even the most negative person couldn’t deny our continued improvement from the previous 2 seasons. To have won 3 out of the 4 games against the preliminary finalists (and we somehow lost the 4th after dominating in every stat category bar the scoreboard) shows to me we have elevated ourselves to be knocking on the door of being a genuine premiership contender in the not too distant future.

The obvious question then beckons, “what went wrong after such a great start??” Everyone will have an opinion on this, but we need to consider the facts before we come to our conclusion. Injuries certainly crept upon us as the season progressed. We had an unprecedented (in my time at the club) good run up until about round 6, where we had basically a full list to choose from. By round 22, 4 out of our first picked back 7 were missing with injury. We also lost Corey Byrne for an extended period and important forwards in This year we had 7 players reach the 50 game milestone for the club Kristian Cary (ACL) and Sam Garstone (multiple hamstrings) weren’t (with Matt Rogers having also played 93 with Swans) and Michael available in the back end of the season. Statistically speaking, two Sinclair also notched up his 100th game in round 4 against East categories jump off the page at you. Kicking efficiency went from Perth. It’s this retention and continuity of the playing group that has 64% down to 57% and our tackling advantage went from plus 24 been missing and is critical if we are to have sustained success. per game to plus 9. These stats are obviously linked with increased opposition pressure affecting our ability to kick the ball efficiently and After the success of our peer voted leadership group last year, we vice versa with our numbers dropping off slightly. We actually used the same approach, but added a few extra names this year. went inside 50 more times (still minus 2 against opposition) but our Clint Jones stepped down as captain in his final season with the forward conversion fell away badly. We will miss him, but there comes a time when everyone Whilst a couple of key inclusions will help with our upward trajectory, has to retire. the main source of our improvement will continue to come from within. Captain. They joined Christian Eyres, Lachie Dennis & Cody Leggett from last year’s group. They took on new responsibilities this year including sitting in on selection as well as continuing to drive an increase in standards around everything we do.

As has become the norm at the end of a season, we had to find another assistant coach to replace who joined West Coast as a development coach. We were fortunate that Trevor Williams agreed to step back into a line coach role looking after the mids and joining Pat Litherland & Darren Kowal to form our senior coaching group. Once again, I couldn’t have been happier how we all worked in so well together. There were no egos in the box with team success the priority for everyone. We were also fortunate to have Daine Burnett step up and look after the mids while Trev was away for 6 weeks on a pre-planned European holiday. He showed he is more than capable of doing the job and hopefully will be given an opportunity when one arises. Andrew Panetta continued in his role as Reserves coach and he has been not only fantastic support for me but also a very good nurturing mentor for the young group he is in charge of. 6 PERTH FOOTBALL CLUB 4 SENIOR COACH REPORT 2019

His able assistants in Kim Vanderweide, Mark Grogan, Kristian Leeson and Bruce Fraser were more than comfortable working with our entire list and consistent messaging for both playing groups was never an issue. To round off this eclectic group, we add in Neil Allen (Chairman of Selectors) & Craig Fewster (Bench Coach). I doubt you’d find a more harmonious coaching group in the AFL.W

Undoubtedly and with respect to all newcomers to the club, our recruit of the year was Saia (I won’t attempt his surname) our new Head S & C coach. Along with his 2 IC Harry, Rehab coach Evan & off-siders Josh & Declan, he was able to develop and implement a program that drove our standards and fitness levels on a steep incline. He was able to engage with the playing group and get the delicate balance of hard work and enjoyment just right. He certainly earned the respect of the playing group in a very short period of time. He also had a fantastic working relationship with our hardworking and dedicated physio, Brett and our club doctor Joe Henry. The other important part of the off-field team is our wonderful head trainers, Charlotte & Hayley. Nothing is too hard for the girls and their efforts are certainly appreciated by not only the entire playing group but also by coaches and managers at all levels within the club.

I’d also like to thank all of our other matchday support staff. From our dynamic stats duo of Boo & Spud to our Team Managers Dacky & Pete, board man Lidds and runner/ coach Jenks. We are so fortunate to have so many passionate people willing to give their time to help us continue to improve. I am sure we are getting closer to rewarding their efforts in the manner they desire.

I’d like to thank Dale, who has one of the most challenging jobs at the club, bringing us all together and making sure it’s as smooth a journey as possible, as well as Marty, Bob and the rest of the board, for their continued support. I firmly believe we are on the cusp of some very exciting and rewarding times. But now is not the time to get comfortable, we all need to all roll up our sleeves and do everything possible to continue our upward trend.

PERTH FOOTBALL CLUB 7 FROM THE RESERVES COACH Andrew Panetta

“Reserves football is all about persistence and resilience. These are the traits you learn to have if you want to be successful.”

Reserves football is all about persistence and resilience. These are the traits you learn to have if you want to be successful. This year we had a great group of young men who showed these qualities and more. Fifty-two young men ran out this year, twelve 1st year players and 4 colts. 3 made their League debuts. We lost 4 games by 5 points and another under 10. We finished 6th with a percentage of 104.31 being the second highest scoring team in the reserves comp.

We believe we are giving all our younger players a good grounding in preparing them for senior footy. With a large group of first-year players combining with the Colts graduating for next year, I can see a large group of young men striving to play league football for the club which must be a great thing. Some thank yous.

Thanks to Dale and the Admin staff. Nothing was ever too difficult for them to do for us.

Thanks to Earl for his patience and guidance. Also thank you to Pat, Trevor and Darren the senior assistants who always had an answer to any tricky question.

Cheers to Charlotte, Hayley and Brett and all the trainers who always showed great professionalism.

To Saia, Harry and the rest of the S & C staff I believe their impact this year has been massive.

Thanks to the players who ran and assisted on game day while injured. Without their help it would have been a lot more difficult to manage.

Thank you to Peter who makes my life very easy on Saturdays with his organisation and support from Mark.

Finally, thank you to the Reserve’s Assistants. Kim, Mark, Bruce, Kristian and Daine.

These guys spend a lot more time than is expected of them, being at training and providing feedback for the players. They would be second to none in the comp for this. I am very appreciative of their efforts. Again, thank you.

All in all, a pleasing effort by everyone at reserves, finals would have been nice and a fitting return for their hard work, but footy can be brutal at times and hopefully we can go that extra effort to make it next year.

Thank you.

8 PERTH FOOTBALL CLUB FROM THE COLTS COACH Michael Pratt “Whether or not an individual is capable of progressing into senior ranks…that ultimately comes down to the commitment/dedication of the player and the patience and persistence of the coaching they receive.”

Thanks to everyone involved at the Perth Footy Club for their support of the Colts program throughout the 2019 season.

It has been a challenging year for the talent programs at our club – with all of our sides (Colts, Futures and u15’s) struggling for positive scoreboard outcomes and suffering some heavy defeats. Whilst this can lead to a negative outlook about the talent that will be transitioning to the senior club in the future – it is important to remember that our 2018 Colts side finished last on the ladder yet we still saw ten players from that side move into the senior squad this year and become regular players – and three of them (Ozzie Davis, Ethan Hansen, Connor Sing) all made their league debuts for the club. Team success at lower levels – particularly juniors – is not the primary determinate of whether or not an individual is capable of progressing into senior ranks…that ultimately comes down to the commitment/dedication of the player and the patience and persistence of the coaching they receive.

It is worth understanding that the majority of the sides in our metropolitan zone – what used to be called u12’s, u14’s etc and is now called “Y9’s”, or “Y10’s” (school year designations) are playing in the lower divisions of the Central Conference (the central conference is made up of teams from the Swan Districts, Perth and East Perth metropolitan zones). What this means to us is that our players are not being regularly exposed to the ‘highest level’ of junior competition available – so when our players come together to represent our footy club, they find the level of pressure applied by the opposition – typically made up of players from the Division#1 sides in each conference - is too much to handle over the course of a game.

There is a positive side to this, however. Our players have A LOT of improvement in them. Of course, when they are thrust into a competitive environment against an opposition who are ‘more ready’ than they are they will find it tough and our results have reflected that – however as they become accustomed to the increased pressure and pace of the game versus higher level opposition, they will improve QUICKLY. As long as they are being coached and as long as they receive the support from their friends, family (and of course the club) that encourages hard work and resilience.

Before closing, I would like to congratulate all of our award winners during the 2019 season – in particular, our winner Simon Heyward. Simon enjoyed an outstanding season and was duly recognised by the WAFL with his selection in the Colt’s Team of the Year. Congratulations also to our State Team representatives – Dev Robertson, Regan Clarke, Elijah Taylor, Logan McDonald and Nathan O’Driscoll. The WA side was successful in winning the championship for the first time in 10 years and all FIVE (5) of our Perth Footy Club players participated in the crucial final game when the title was clinched! We also had THREE (3) players in the WA U16’s side – Regan Hill, Toby Henry and Bailey O’Driscoll – and we look forward to those boys playing a larger role in the colts side during 2020.

There were 60 players who represented our club in the Colts competition this year and I will finish off with a quick thank you to all of the support staff associated with getting them out on the track! The amount of time committed by everyone – medical staff and trainers, the S+C team, assistant coaches and our team management/admin staff really is amazing…we train LATE (the coaches rarely leave the club much before 9pm) and our games start EARLY and everyone just gets on with it without complaint. Here’s to 2020!

12 PERTH FOOTBALL CLUB FROM THE TALENT MANAGER Trevor Screaigh

“I personally believe we will improve our programs within the Talent Pathway by continuing to support our metropolitan zone and by building our regional satellite groups in Northam and Dongara.”

The 2019 season was a challenging one in the Talent Pathway space for the Perth Football Club. However, whilst we didn’t achieve the on- field results we would have liked with either the Colts or the Futures our outstanding coaches continue to work hard to develop our young players and provide them with the opportunity to improve their football.

We had over 60 players represent our Colts team this year under the guidance of our fantastic staff consisting of Glenn Davies, Peter Donaldson, Dean Mann, Chris Maskiell, Luke Everett, Liam Husband, Jess Vince, Steve Ransted and Peter Gangemi who were very well lead by Head Coach Michael Pratt. Pleasingly these players were a combination of young men from our metropolitan and country zones and players promoted from the Futures program. We had the chance to play two regional games this year- one in Geraldton and one in Albany, and we look forward to the opportunity to play in our regional zone in 2020. The Colts managed to win five games for the season and importantly produced some talent which will represent our Club really well moving forward and several who will have the opportunity to play at the highest level in the future. Colts award winners were Simon Heyward (Ensor Medal), Nathan O’Driscoll (Runner Up Best & Fairest), Jacob Radomiljac (Spirit of the Colts Award), Tyrone Crees (PP&O Encouragement Award), Elijah Taylor (Mark of the Year), Logan McDonald (Goal of the Year) and Deven Robertson (WAFL Combined PP&O Award- 18’s National Championships Fairest & Best).

The Futures (16’s) program was an extended program for the 2019 season which consisted of a pre-season program and a 10-game season. Whilst it was not ideal to have our Futures players training off-site for the majority of the program, we did manage to introduce the players to a gym program in the latter part of the Futures program and this will help the players as they progress their football. The Futures staff- Daine Burnett, Scott Moore, Kristian Leeson, Kurt Bufton, Aaron Dean, Brodie Adriaens and Garry Hallett had a primary focus to increase the group’s level of fitness and improve their skill level under pressure. As mentioned earlier this resulted in several Futures players transitioning into the Colts program in the second half of the season. Futures award winners were Tony Musa (Player of the Year), Angus Heeley (Troy Cook Courage Award), Kynan Blondel (Coaches Award) and Kaiden Pisani ( Leadership Award).

The RWF 14’s (55 players) and 15’s (33 players) Development programs consisted of players from our regional and metropolitan zones who trained over an 8 week period toward the end of the season and culminated in the 15’s playing two games at the end of their program. This was also a great opportunity to include great local coaches from our zone- Justin Baker, Chris Maskiell, Damian McCague, Irene Hall, David Keys and one of our League players- Matt Rogers, who all focused on coaching some key fundamental skills. Katelyn Towie, Chelsea Thomas and Josh Rognetta simultaneously introduced the players to a valuable fitness program.

Proudly our Talent Pathway programs produced 5 players who represented Western Australia in the National 18’s Carnival winning team- including our Colts & WA Captain Deven Robertson, Colts Vice Captain Regan Clarke, Elijah Taylor, Nathan O’Driscoll and Logan McDonald. We also had Regan Hill, Bailey O’Driscoll and Toby Henry represent the WA 16’s Team and Dongara 14-year-old Mitchell Keene represent the WA 15’s School Boys Team.

I personally believe we will improve our programs within the Talent Pathway by continuing to support our metropolitan zone and by building our regional satellite groups in Northam and Dongara, which are overseen by Willie “Wonka’ Dick, Russell Keene and former Perth player Adrian Catchard.

After completing my first season in the position of Talent Manager- Perth, I would like to sincerely thank all of the staff mentioned already as well as our Trainers- particularly, Charlotte Elliott, Hayley Paterson and Emily Gibb, Ground Manager- Gary Lendich as well as the team of Senior Coaches and committed and passionate staff who work hard at the Club throughout the week. Thank you also to the Perth PP&O team, Revo Fitness- our jumper sponsor, Kassems Pizza and Christina Harding of Christina’s Restaurant who support the team every week and the players really do appreciate that support.

A special thank you to our Administration Assistant Michele Burton who has been a huge help for me and has ensured that our players have been well supported throughout the whole year, and to my family who have supported and encouraged me over the past year and enabled me to work in my passion of football.

I look forward to continuing to work with a fantastic group of players, coaches, staff, and families throughout the 2020 season. If we are all committed, work hard and have fun I have no doubt it will be a successful one.

CENTURION FUND

This year’s lunch saw a departure from the usual format. Hosted by our 2019 Club Legend – Adrian Barich, guests were treated to “THE GREAT DEBATE: 50 TIMES THE STATE HAS BEEN DIVIDED.” On the West Coast Eagles Side our very own Rob Wiley was joined by Phil Matera to argue against the Docker’s Paul Hasleby and Anthony Grover. The panellists shared many stories from behind the scenes and gave the attendees a birds-eye view of some of the more memorable Derby moments, like the now infamous ‘Demolition Derby’ of 2000.

Many thanks to all the generous contributors who donated raffle prizes and auction items. Although the quintessential Allan ‘Chubby’ Stiles makes it look effortless, the amount of work involved in arranging and collecting all the vouchers for the Entertainment Packages is quite staggering. Thanks Chubbs, you are an example to us all. Along with the proceeds from the raffle and auction, a staggering $17,000 in donations was handed over at the lunch. Ted O’Connor, Peter Gilkison, Jodie & Phil Castle – we are floored by your generosity, thank you.

If you love the demons, and you are interested in contributing to the Fund that safeguards our future, make a donation and have your name immortalised on the Centurion Walk. Please contact the club for details.

PERTH FOOTBALL CLUB 19 COUNTRY FOOTBALL

CENTRAL MIDLANDS COASTAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE 2019

The 2019 season began with another new addition to the ‘All day All Sports Model’ within the CMCFL with the addition of Junior Netball. It is very impressive each year that our clubs manage to provide additional family benefits for every member of the family to be involved at club level.

The big addition going into 2020 will be the progress of the senior netball, and the A Reserves team submission to the 2020 fixtures. This is another exciting progression of the sports model we are fostering. The CMCFL Grand Final was the most competitive that we have seen in some year, with the Cervantes Tiger Sharks taking the League Premiership from Lancelin Ledge Point, and Cervantes also taking the Reserves Premiership from Moora Mavericks. In the Junior Football, Moora Mavericks took the Premiership from Lancelin Ledge Point. Senior netball was a tightly contested fight between Jurien Bay and Cervantes, with Cervantes coming away with the win, and in our first-ever junior netball grand final, the Lancelin Ledge point juniors won to Moora Mavericks. Our hockey is in its second year of the competition and the Premiership was won by Moora in a very tight, thrilling, edge of the seat game to Jurien Bay.

2019 also brought some changes to the Board of the CMCFL, with Alan Leeson stepping into the role of the President, and he was well assisted by Geoff Wheeler, Dale Simmons, David Trevaskis and Wendy Cousins.

It was very pleasing to the league that our Operations Manager, Rayelene Wright was recognised by the WACFL for the massive amount of work that she puts in each year, not only to our league but with the Northern Colts Carnival which was hosted by the CMCFL in 2019. We are entering exciting times for the 2020 season, with the reintroduction of the Crossover games with the Mortlock Football League. When clubs in the CMCFL have a bye, they will play clubs in the Mortlock who also have a bye. This takes away the loss of games in each of the leagues as a result of having an odd number of teams. We are very pleased that negotiations have been successful in this endeavour.

The 2020 Northern Colts Carnival will also be held at Moora once more. It is a credit to the 4 leagues involved (Mortlock, North Midlands, Avon and Central Midlands) that they have worked together to ensure that our young players still have a pathway into their future football options.

It is fantastic to see the young players of the past in the CMCFL now stepping up and playing for Perth Football Club and seeing that the pathway that Perth FC provide is strong and steady. This will provide players of the future a step up the ladder in the pathway to their chosen level of football.

We are all looking forward to the 2020 season.

“Female participation in our great game continues to grow at an amazing rate.”

Another successful year in the WAFC Metro Central Region. Under the guidance of Competitions and Club Development Team Leader Corey Ranger and Community Development Manager Isaac Stewart, we continued to roll out a record number of programs and initiatives to further engage our community as a whole. I would like to take a few minutes to thank all those people who had an impact on the Demons District in 2019.

District Chairperson – Sean Collingwood and his District Football Development Council members who have helped drive important change in the district. To Junior Competition Council Director Marshall Hannah and Assistant Competition Director Jo Warner, who’s tireless efforts to the JCC have seen an increase in positive gameday environments throughout the district.

To, Daniel Gibbons our Umpire Development Manager, who again continued to deliver high-quality umpires to our competitions throughout the season, without Dan and his umpires we wouldn’t be able to run matches each week and this year Dan was recognised as Demons District Volunteer of the Year Award. To, Kiah Marsden at the Perth Angels, the amount of hard work and dedication they have put in to help establish the club as a premier destination for female football in WA. I would also like to extend my thanks to John Dorazio (Treasure), Lynsey Purdie (bookkeeper) and Ryan Ramage (District Register) for all their hard work in the 2019 season. To the parents, coaches, and thousands of volunteers in clubland that make the game of AFL so fantastic. Without you – the Volunteer, the game could not be what it is today, and we thank you for that.

SEASON SNAPSHOT

2019 Showcased many great programs and highlights across the Demons District. Some of these include –

2019 saw the implementation of the Auskick 2.0 across all three-year groups at all Junior Clubs in the Perth District. Thanks to all the volunteers at each junior club for their help in getting the new Auskick model at such a high standard across the Perth District.

Auskick Gala 2.0 for the first time at Curtin Uni was a huge success, resulting in record team and fantastic feedback. The Year 2 Auskick Gala Day was run at Langley Park and the kids had a fantastic day and thoroughly enjoyed having the Perth Demon players helping on the day. Over 800 kids from 80 teams across the District participated all for the fun of it and to enjoy a taste of playing against other club’s teams.

Building on the foundations set in previous years the growth and promotion of Australian Rules Football continued to excel throughout school engagement programs in 2019. Servicing over 80 schools, the Perth District delivered programs and competitions to 80% of schools in the district.

The future growth of AFL in schools would not be possible without the continued support and hard work provided by our AFL school ambassadors. The vast majority of primary and secondary schools within the district have an AFL School Ambassador signed up to engage with the district to promote football at their school. All our ambassadors do an outstanding job year in year out and we as a district are very fortunate to have high-quality ambassadors and teachers. Thank you for all your efforts and we look forward to what 2020 has in store.
