When Matt Riggio runs out for his
200th WAFL game this weekend, he will solidify himself as one of the greats of Swan Districts Football Club.

A quiet achiever that gets the job done, the skipper of the Swans will become just the 20th player in the club’s illustrious history to reach the coveted milestone. Riggio began his WAFL journey at Peel Thunder with one game, before being selected by North Melbourne at
Pick 28 in the 2005 AFL National Draft.
After playing 10 AFL games in three seasons before being delisted by North Melbourne in
2009, Riggio returned to Western Australia and joined the Swan Districts Football Club at the peak of their powers. One year in, Riggio reached the ultimate goal, a Premiership. Alongside the likes of Andrew Krakouer,
Stephen Coniglio and Ashley Hansen, Riggio lived out the boyhood dream of claiming a Premiership Medal. The game is remembered as one of the greatest WAFL Grand Finals of all-time, with Krakouer kicking a late goal to seal the Premiership by 1 point. Riggio never looked back from 2010, becoming a stalwart of the black and white army, claiming back-toback Best & Fairest awards in 2015 and 2016.
“To win the Club Best & Fairest in 2015 and again the next season is something I will hold dear to my heart,” Riggio told swandistrictsfc.com.au earlier this season.

“The two players who have reached that milestone that stand out for me are Tallan Ames and Tony Notte,”he said.
“It’ something I am very proud of and have joined good company with the guys that have won it twice.
“I have played a lot football with them and it would be awesome to join them.”
“With the names that have hit that mark and to have a little pin on the locker, I’ll be honoured to play 200.”
The 32-year-old pulled on the Black Swan jumper for Western Australia twice, before becoming a Life Member of the Swan Districts Football Club in 2017.

  • “Becoming
  • a
  • Life Member, when it

happened, I wondered whether I deserved it.” he said in April.
“Just given the list of Swans Legends that are on it, but I am really proud of the recognition.”
Riggio continued to claim accolades in 2020, becoming the captain of the football club this season. His leadership and experience have proved invaluable for Swans as they look to blood younger players into their line-up. Riggio will leave a massive mark on the Swan Districts Football Club and the 200-game milestone adds another fantastic chapter to a storied career.
The durable leader is in his 11th season with the Swans and will join current teammate Tony Notte in reaching the 200-game mark.

COLLECTABLES

During 2020, the Football Budget will again feature a section on WAFL memorabilia and invites you to write or email if you want more information about the football collectables you have tucked away at home.

Despite being less than 40 years eight clubs), old,WAFL-branded items produced m e a n i n g in the early 1980s are among the most sought after these days. Perhaps it’s because most WAFL collectors are aged between about 40 and 60, and these pieces remind them of their younger years. Whatever the case, memorabilia from the WAFL’s mass-marketing era, around 1982, has featured often in this column over the past 10 years.

The team list in that program had a lot of spelling errors, but some great WA players in Laurie Kickett (presumably Larry), Wally Materia (Matera), Willie Roe, Nicky Winmar, Phil Narkle, Derrick Kickett (Derek), Brett Farmer, Benny Vigona, Michael Mitchell, Maurice Rioli, Brad Collard, Oral McGuire and Stephen Michaels (Michael). pieces of memorabilia were shown to me this week by two separate Melbourne-based collectors.
But one group of memorabilia has somehow never graced these pages – the various wallets/purses produced by Hollco, mostly for the now-defunct The Footy Shop in Oxford St, Leederville. Hollco was the manufacturer for many of the WAFL-branded items of the era, including the club wooden shields that are popular with collectors nowadays. The wallets were embossed, in gold, with the shield-shaped club logos that were used from late 1981 onwards. They rarely turn up these

I’ve not seen either of these programs hit the market in recent years, but I have no doubt they would be popular at auction.
The reason I mention it here is because there were printed programs for this match and the 1985 All Stars team was stacked with WAFL/WA talent, including the Narkle brothers, the Krakouer brothers, Graham Kickett, Kevin Taylor, Nicky Winmar, Brett Little, David Palm, Kevin Caton, Benny Vigona, Maurice Rioli, Peter Ware and Stephen Michael. days. The Story of Jim and Phillip Krakouer. by Sean Edward Gorman BA

Moorditj Magic: The Story of Jim and Phillip Krakouer. By Sean Edward Gorman BA (Hons) Murdoch University A thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy At Murdoch University March 2004 DECLARATION I declare that this dissertation is my own account of my research and contains as its main content work, which has not previously been submitted for a degree at any tertiary education institution. …………………………………. Sean Edward Gorman. ii ABSTRACT This thesis analyses and investigates the issue of racism in the football code of Australian Rules to understand how racism is manifested in Australian daily life. In doing this, it considers biological determinism, Indigenous social obligation and kinship structure, social justice and equity, government policy, the media, local history, everyday life, football culture, history and communities and the emergence of Indigenous players in the modern game. These social issues are explored through the genre of biography and the story of the Noongar footballers, Jim and Phillip Krakouer, who played for Claremont and North Melbourne in the late 1970’s and 1980’s. This thesis, in looking at Jim and Phillip Krakouers careers, engages with other Indigenous footballer’s contributions prior to the AFL introducing Racial and Religious Vilification Laws in 1995. This thesis offers a way of reading cultural texts and difference to understand some Indigenous and non-Indigenous relationships in an Australian context. iii ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS I have often wondered where I would be if I had not made the change from work to study in 1992. In doing this I have followed a path that has taken me down many roads to many doors and in so doing I have been lucky to meet many wonderful and generous people.
