Throwing Muses: Bio Throwing Muses: Bio “Sublime riffs and hair-standing-on-end vocals giving you a jolt. Throwing Muses has maintained the inimitable ethos that has distinguished their music for over three decades” — Pop Matters Purgatory/Paradise is the newest release by Throwing Muses, the groundbreaking band who broke every rule in the book and effortlessly changed the face of alternative music. Kristin Hersh, David Narcizo and Bernard George have created an epic, thirty-two song event, published as a book and CD combination, with photographs and essays by Kristin—also an acclaimed author—and artwork by David Narcizo. Played as a series of movements dovetailing into a powerful statement, this artful piece outdoes everything in this band’s long, illustrious career, proving that Throwing Muses has only peaks, no valleys, and unbelievably, continues to outdo themselves with every record. Signed to the prestigious British label, 4AD, and Sire/Warner Brothers in the U.S. as teenagers, Hersh quickly realized that she was not interested in playing the game of the corporate recording industry and traded her first solo record (the highly acclaimed Hips and Makers, featuring the hit single, “Your Ghost”) for her band’s freedom. Released from their contractual obligations, Hersh and all of her musical projects—including the inventive, no-holds-barred, noise rock trio, 50FootWave, who pioneered the pay what you want model—are now entirely listener-supported. “Three shy friends from a little island, freaking the f*** out,” is how Hersh describes her band. “We play because we’re addicted to the noise and because we love each other. We’ve never stopped playing. Thirty years on a bus together only encouraged us to play more and no one has told us to shut up yet.” Throwing Muses’ lifelong world tour shows no sign of ending. .

She will perform her solo show WORDS + MUSIC on 30 August at the magnificent Transitional Cathedral and will make several other !appearances throughout the festival. WORD Christchurch’s Literary Director Rachael King, herself an ex-bass player with several Flying !Nun bands, has been a fan since she was 17. “I am thrilled to bring Kristin to Christchurch to help us redefine the parameters of what a literary festival can be. I had recently read her brilliant memoir, and saw that she was actively touring overseas, promoting both her music and her book. So I sent an invitation to New Zealand and !was overjoyed when she accepted.” In 1986, Throwing Muses was the first American band signed to the legendary label 4AD, which went on to acquire the Muses’ contemporaries, the Pixies and the Breeders. Since then, Hersh has forged a solo career, beginning with 1994’s Hips and Makers, formed 50 Foot Wave, and continued to play with the Throwing Muses; their latest album, Purgatory/Paradise, is !accompanied by a book of photos, essays, stories and lyrics. Hersh’s memoir Paradoxical Undressing tells the remarkable story of a year in her life when she was 17, playing in Throwing Muses, and was diagnosed with bi-polar disorder.

Enter the Flange Factory: Math the Band releases a multi-concept project Troubled times call for audacious measures. Math the Band is back, this time with a whirlwind of multimedia the likes of which has never been attempted. Their latest project, Flange Factory Five, is an immersive experience that includes a novel, record, game boy cartridge, energy drink and boutique guitar pedal. MTB, sometimes billed as “Math The Band The Band,” is the project of frontman Kevin Steinhauser and a rotating cast of characters, which currently features guitarist Max Holbrook, bassist Adam Waz and drummer Matt Zappa. The band has been operational for 20 years, and based in Providence for 12. A characteristically joyous effort, the Flange Factory Five features the band’s signature combination of glitchy, 8-bit keyboards over distorted guitars. A project like this requires the boundless energy they put forward in their ecstatic live shows, and it totally comes through on the recording. The uptempo “Dual of the Deer” features guitars and synth lines in roaring triumphiant harmony. “DKWIC” has a great Brian May-style guitar solo, and “Coach Says” is a hard-edged tune at the circle pit end of the spectrum. Stenhouser, who started the project in high school, puts every ounce of himself into the vocals. Along with great playing throughout, this album brings us the best of grit and nerddom, like a skater punk version of the music from Crash Bandicoot. But the video game sounds can belie the smart composition and clever lyrics. “Wet Cement” is ultra-catchy montage fodder about starting a new chapter: “The fear is exciting and I can’t wait to be born.” An additional treat is a suite of “Flange Factory Five” instrumental interludes that could be the jingle for the cartoon television show of the same name.

Great new album from Hersh coBy Atom JoyIt's 25 years since Throwing Muses' original line-up blew me away, and a barnstorming gig in June 1989 is still my all-time favourite. (Not that there haven't been great Muses gigs since then!) This beautifully produced CD/Book is a fine and fitting installment in the Throwing Muses catalogue. There are several strong tracks here (e.g. Lazy Eye, Milan, Slippershell) that quickly work their way into your imagination, and several other more subtle or apparently slight pieces that will slow-burn around your brain. Overall, the album rewards repeat listens, revealing new pleasures and characteristics. Most of Kristen Hersh's familiar lyrical tropes are present; she's still an expert at putting a twist on common cliches and delivering dead-pan puns, and it's great to find she can still surprise after all these years. An exploration of the strangeness and wonder and horror of life as it's lived in 21st century America, I would strongly recommend this to anyone who's enjoyed the Muses in the past, and to anyone who wants their rock music to surprise and provoke them.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful.

  • Alt-Nation: Some New Discs and Shows to Bid 2013 Goodbye
Alt-Nation: Some New Discs and Shows to Bid 2013 Goodbye Rock in RI: Clarkin’s top shows of December Throwing Muses – Purgatory/Paradise It’s been a decade since Newport’s own Throwing Muses have released a record and Purgatory/Paradise shows that it wasn’t spent being idle. Purgatory/Paradise is a 32-track record that comes with a book that includes audio commentary and even more tracks! Because of the sheer volume, it is impossible to compare it to anything the band has done before. Taken on number of good songs, it’s the band’s best release to date. Of course, technically they could have 20 stinkers and still accomplish that. There are multiple versions of some songs, like “Cherry Candy 1 & 2,” but it doesn’t feel excessive. Listen to it on shuffle and it doesn’t seem overdone at all. “Morning Birds 1” starts as a fuzz fest that reminds me of The Real Ramona era Muses while “Morning Birds 2” is quiet, like an expansion on the first version, which quiets down at the end. “Sleepwalking 1” is another great guitar romp in vintage Muses style. “Glass Cats” is a dirty piano-driven number that feels like it’s going to explode into something else at any moment from the tension. Singer/guitarist Kristin Hersh’s lyrics are as haunted and biting as ever. “Static” is another hypnotic indie guitar psychedelic romp that nobody can quite do like the Muses. I was skeptical going in about Purgatory/Paradise because I only liked one song off their last album, but Purgatory/Paradise is one of the Muses’ best records yet.
