Kristin Hersh KRISTIN HERSH After founding her influential artpunk band Throwing Muses in Providence, RI, at the age of 14, Kristin Hersh has spent decades confounding expectations and breaking rules, both hers and others. From life as the reluctant frontperson for the Muses, to the solo career she swore would never happen, through the founding of an ambitious and altruistic nonprofit, to her recent foray into a successful career as an author, Kristin, now a mother of four, didn’t see much of this coming. Throwing Muses first gained recognition playing on bills with similarly singular artists like the Pixies and Dinosaur Jr. They signed with the highly regarded British indie label 4AD Records the label’s first American signing and then to Warner Bros in the U.S. Kristin’s solo career spun off in 1994 with the release of Hips and Makers. The CD was widely acclaimed and included “Your Ghost,” a duet with R.E.M.’s Michael Stipe. This was followed by eight more critically acclaimed and influential solo records. Kristin often plays all instruments on her solo releases, including this year’s Wyatt at the Coyote Palace, recorded over a 4 year period, on the island where Kristin grew up. Wyatt at the Coyote Palace is both a book and a 24 song record. She also heads the power trio, 50FootWave, formed in 2004. All 50FootWave releases are available for download, free of charge and licensed for sharing via Creative Commons. Power + Light is 50FootWave’s most successful release: a blistering thirty minute barrage of uninterrupted music. In 2007 Kristin cofounded the nonprofit Coalition of Artists and StakeHolders (CASH Music). Through CASH, listeners (“Strange Angels”) have completely funded Kristin’s musical output. CASH has also powered dozens of other artist and label projects and has grown into a widelyrecognized powerhouse of technical tools that enable commerce, communication and sustainability for artists all open source and free of charge. In 2013, Throwing Muses returned with their first studio album in 10 years – Purgatory/Paradise – published as a book and CD. The art book is 64pages of lyrics, essays, and photos and includes a 32track CD that was entirely listenersupported, thanks to Kristin’s Strange Angels. Kristin began her writing career with the widely acclaimed Rat Girl (titled Paradoxical Undressing outside of the U.S.), published by Penguin. Rolling Stone named Rat Girl one of the top ten best rock memoirs ever written. Kristin has brought the stage show all over the world, playing theaters, museums and festivals. Rat Girl was also adapted as an awardwinning play. Her latest book, Don’t Suck, Don’t Die, a personal account of her friendship with the late Vic Chesnutt, was a finalist for the American Booksellers Association book of the year and shortlisted for the Pat Conroy Southern book of the year. NPR said of Don’t Suck, Don’t Die, “Not only one of the best books of the year, but one of the most beautiful rock memoirs ever written.” More info: http://www.kristinhersh.com/ Download highres photos here: http://www.kristinhersh.com/links/hirespressphotos/ .

Fuckin like us!

For immediate release !15 July, 2014 Music is the WORD - Rock Musician Kristin Hersh Headlines !Christchurch Literary Festival Seminal indie-rock musician Kristin Hersh is coming to New Zealand to share her music and prose !at the WORD Christchurch Writers & Readers Festival, presented in association with The Press. So I sent an invitation to New Zealand and !was overjoyed when she accepted.” In 1986, Throwing Muses was the first American band signed to the legendary label 4AD, which went on to acquire the Muses’ contemporaries, the Pixies and the Breeders. Since then, Hersh has forged a solo career, beginning with 1994’s Hips and Makers, formed 50 Foot Wave, and continued to play with the Throwing Muses; their latest album, Purgatory/Paradise, is !accompanied by a book of photos, essays, stories and lyrics. Hersh’s memoir Paradoxical Undressing tells the remarkable story of a year in her life when she was 17, playing in Throwing Muses, and was diagnosed with bi-polar disorder.

  • Music Is Live and Outside …
Enter the Flange Factory: Math the Band releases a multi-concept project Troubled times call for audacious measures. Math the Band is back, this time with a whirlwind of multimedia the likes of which has never been attempted. Their latest project, Flange Factory Five, is an immersive experience that includes a novel, record, game boy cartridge, energy drink and boutique guitar pedal. MTB, sometimes billed as “Math The Band The Band,” is the project of frontman Kevin Steinhauser and a rotating cast of characters, which currently features guitarist Max Holbrook, bassist Adam Waz and drummer Matt Zappa. The band has been operational for 20 years, and based in Providence for 12. A characteristically joyous effort, the Flange Factory Five features the band’s signature combination of glitchy, 8-bit keyboards over distorted guitars. A project like this requires the boundless energy they put forward in their ecstatic live shows, and it totally comes through on the recording. The uptempo “Dual of the Deer” features guitars and synth lines in roaring triumphiant harmony. “DKWIC” has a great Brian May-style guitar solo, and “Coach Says” is a hard-edged tune at the circle pit end of the spectrum. Stenhouser, who started the project in high school, puts every ounce of himself into the vocals. Along with great playing throughout, this album brings us the best of grit and nerddom, like a skater punk version of the music from Crash Bandicoot. But the video game sounds can belie the smart composition and clever lyrics. “Wet Cement” is ultra-catchy montage fodder about starting a new chapter: “The fear is exciting and I can’t wait to be born.” An additional treat is a suite of “Flange Factory Five” instrumental interludes that could be the jingle for the cartoon television show of the same name.

  • Keep on Moving: Mighty Good Music Offerings
Keep on Moving: Mighty Good Music Offerings The Mighty Good Boys – The God-King Gerald Ford Local folk rock outfit The Mighty Good Boys are out with their second album, The God-King Gerald Ford, and it’s a real banger, as the kids would say. The album represents a superb sophomore effort for the group, whose mature songwriting and ambitious musical arrangements set them apart in a crowded field of local rootsy rock ‘n’ roll bands. At times, Americana-style music seems to be at risk of becoming a fad, generified to the level of bands like the Lumineers. Like The Band, The MGB inject the traditional music template with their own brand of edge and electricity. Gerald Ford features decidedly more ambitious material than their debut album, It Ain’t Easy. They move fluidly from bar band blues rock to folk to sprawling, Crazy Horse-style guitar jams that show they’re putting it all on the line. Lyrically, the album is like multiple Dylan eras rolled into one, exploring themes of Christianity, morality, family and fractured relationships. The meditative “What’s a Man” deals with some age-old questions related to masculinity (“What’s a man to do without a woman to break his heart/what’s a man to prove without a woman to wrench his brain apart”), with an awesome, horn-laden outro to boot. “Jacob” is a beautiful pseudo-hymn ostensibly referencing the biblical story of Jacob and Esau, and “Oh God” wrestles with faith in the wake of tragedy. The album’s strengths lie in its simple presentation and imperfections; from the rawness and clutter come moments of utter clarity.

Over 400 guests were in attendance at the lavish black-tie affair. December greens, such as laurel, balsam and pine, decorated the nineteenth century mansion's arches, bannisters and sconces, reflecting this year's Victorian theme. Centerpieces of boxwood, decorated with gold ribbons, miniature lights, and white porcelain cherub ornaments, adorned each table at the Ball. The centerpieces and ornaments were given to the guests at evening's end as mementos. The $60,000 raised was the most in the event's nine year history. The donations from the Ball supplement Salve's scholarship monies which are awarded to deserving students.
