SALVE REGINA C) THE NEWPORT COLLEGE NEWSBULLETIN Published by the Office of Public Relations, Ext. 208 Vol. 16 No. 8 December 19, 1985 NINTH ANNUAL SALVE REGINA COLLEGE GOVERNOR'S BALL RAISES $60,000 Ochre Court was the site of the ninth annual Salve Regina College Governor's Ball, held on Saturday, December 7. Over 400 guests were in attendance at the lavish black-tie affair. December greens, such as laurel, balsam and pine, decorated the nineteenth century mansion's arches, bannisters and sconces, reflecting this year's Victorian theme. Centerpieces of boxwood, decorated with gold ribbons, miniature lights, and white porcelain cherub ornaments, adorned each table at the Ball. The centerpieces and ornaments were given to the guests at evening's end as mementos. The $60,000 raised was the most in the event's nine year history. The donations from the Ball supplement Salve's scholarship monies which are awarded to deserving students. Sister M. Therese Antone, Vice President for Institutional Advancement, would like to express her appreciation to all students, faculty and staff members who participated in the Ball and its preparation. * * * ANNOUNCEMENTS NEW ENGLAND/QUEBEC STUDENT EXCHANGE PROGRAM Under the New England/Quebec Student Exchange Program eligible, full-time Salve students may spend one or two semesters during their sophomore or junior year at one of Quebec's partici pating institutions. Fuckin like us!

  • Keep on Moving: Mighty Good Music Offerings
Keep on Moving: Mighty Good Music Offerings The Mighty Good Boys – The God-King Gerald Ford Local folk rock outfit The Mighty Good Boys are out with their second album, The God-King Gerald Ford, and it’s a real banger, as the kids would say. The album represents a superb sophomore effort for the group, whose mature songwriting and ambitious musical arrangements set them apart in a crowded field of local rootsy rock ‘n’ roll bands. At times, Americana-style music seems to be at risk of becoming a fad, generified to the level of bands like the Lumineers. Like The Band, The MGB inject the traditional music template with their own brand of edge and electricity. Gerald Ford features decidedly more ambitious material than their debut album, It Ain’t Easy. They move fluidly from bar band blues rock to folk to sprawling, Crazy Horse-style guitar jams that show they’re putting it all on the line. Lyrically, the album is like multiple Dylan eras rolled into one, exploring themes of Christianity, morality, family and fractured relationships. The meditative “What’s a Man” deals with some age-old questions related to masculinity (“What’s a man to do without a woman to break his heart/what’s a man to prove without a woman to wrench his brain apart”), with an awesome, horn-laden outro to boot. “Jacob” is a beautiful pseudo-hymn ostensibly referencing the biblical story of Jacob and Esau, and “Oh God” wrestles with faith in the wake of tragedy. The album’s strengths lie in its simple presentation and imperfections; from the rawness and clutter come moments of utter clarity.

Great new album from Hersh coBy Atom JoyIt's 25 years since Throwing Muses' original line-up blew me away, and a barnstorming gig in June 1989 is still my all-time favourite. (Not that there haven't been great Muses gigs since then!) This beautifully produced CD/Book is a fine and fitting installment in the Throwing Muses catalogue. There are several strong tracks here (e.g. Lazy Eye, Milan, Slippershell) that quickly work their way into your imagination, and several other more subtle or apparently slight pieces that will slow-burn around your brain. Overall, the album rewards repeat listens, revealing new pleasures and characteristics. Most of Kristen Hersh's familiar lyrical tropes are present; she's still an expert at putting a twist on common cliches and delivering dead-pan puns, and it's great to find she can still surprise after all these years. An exploration of the strangeness and wonder and horror of life as it's lived in 21st century America, I would strongly recommend this to anyone who's enjoyed the Muses in the past, and to anyone who wants their rock music to surprise and provoke them.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful.

  • Alt-Nation: Some New Discs and Shows to Bid 2013 Goodbye
Alt-Nation: Some New Discs and Shows to Bid 2013 Goodbye Rock in RI: Clarkin’s top shows of December Throwing Muses – Purgatory/Paradise It’s been a decade since Newport’s own Throwing Muses have released a record and Purgatory/Paradise shows that it wasn’t spent being idle. Purgatory/Paradise is a 32-track record that comes with a book that includes audio commentary and even more tracks! Because of the sheer volume, it is impossible to compare it to anything the band has done before. Taken on number of good songs, it’s the band’s best release to date. Of course, technically they could have 20 stinkers and still accomplish that. There are multiple versions of some songs, like “Cherry Candy 1 & 2,” but it doesn’t feel excessive. Listen to it on shuffle and it doesn’t seem overdone at all. “Morning Birds 1” starts as a fuzz fest that reminds me of The Real Ramona era Muses while “Morning Birds 2” is quiet, like an expansion on the first version, which quiets down at the end. “Sleepwalking 1” is another great guitar romp in vintage Muses style. “Glass Cats” is a dirty piano-driven number that feels like it’s going to explode into something else at any moment from the tension. Singer/guitarist Kristin Hersh’s lyrics are as haunted and biting as ever. “Static” is another hypnotic indie guitar psychedelic romp that nobody can quite do like the Muses. I was skeptical going in about Purgatory/Paradise because I only liked one song off their last album, but Purgatory/Paradise is one of the Muses’ best records yet.
