Great new album from Hersh coBy Atom JoyIt's 25 years since Throwing Muses' original line-up blew me away, and a barnstorming gig in June 1989 is still my all-time favourite. (Not that there haven't been great Muses gigs since then!) This beautifully produced CD/Book is a fine and fitting installment in the Throwing Muses catalogue. There are several strong tracks here (e.g. Lazy Eye, Milan, Slippershell) that quickly work their way into your imagination, and several other more subtle or apparently slight pieces that will slow-burn around your brain. Overall, the album rewards repeat listens, revealing new pleasures and characteristics. Most of Kristen Hersh's familiar lyrical tropes are present; she's still an expert at putting a twist on common cliches and delivering dead-pan puns, and it's great to find she can still surprise after all these years. An exploration of the strangeness and wonder and horror of life as it's lived in 21st century America, I would strongly recommend this to anyone who's enjoyed the Muses in the past, and to anyone who wants their rock music to surprise and provoke them.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. It is a wonderful flowing piece of continuous music that showcases her at the peak of her creative powers, along with the two out Muses. All the unexpected hooky melodies weave with a narrative that dances between surreal and cerebral leaving you fully satisfied as well a spell bounds by Kristin's story telling. One of the best albums of the year by far. As other reviewers have noted your perspective and experiencing will continual to evolve the more this album gets into your rotation, which is the true test of greatness.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A must ownBy Spiceman45As I sit listening to this straight through for the first time (and as a huge TM fan) I cannot get over how amazing this collection of songs is! It is incredibly cohesive, diverse and innovative. I'm challenged to think of another TM album I would recommend more, and that is saying a lot! A must own for any fan, and as good a place to jump into their music as any I would say if it's new to you. This far exceeded my expectations for a new album from them after all this time. Purgatory/Paradise is a revolutionary fusion of music and text from seminal indie rock band Throwing Muses.Kristin Hersh, Throwing Muses’s lead singer/songwriter, is one of the most well-respected musicians to emerge from the 1980s indie rock scene. Her work has influenced artists such as Cat Power, Alanis Morrissette, Lush, and Sleater- Kinney, as well as Riot Grrrls everywhere.Ten years in the making, Hersh and Throwing Muses’s 32-track album Purgatory/Paradise is the centerpiece of this deluxe 64-page book which also contains more than two dozen photographs and artwork by Kristin Hersh and band member Dave Narcizo; lyrics for each song; stories and essays that accompany each track written by Hersh; and instructions for downloads of exclusive content, including demos and outtakes. Purgatory/Paradise is a . gorgeous, interactive art book . Hersh’s lyrics and stories would make it a compelling read even without the music. (Boing Boing)Purgatory/Paradise was devised both as a record and as a book, with essays by Hersh and art by Narcizo. It’s both a gorgeous standalone object . and a sort of decoder for the album’s tracks . (Pitchfork)Nothing short of epic . wrenching, alarming, disturbing, and occasionally seasoned with bits of dark humor . a stunning psychological ride. Like the most powerful of drugs. it’s the stuff addictions are made of. (American Songwriter, four stars)Awesome. (Flavorwire)Triumphant . fresh and expansive . What is clear is that this record, and book, which call into question what records and books and can and should do, how they can and should interact, still delivers in a basic, thrilling way. (Popmatters)Art, essays and outstanding new music collide on a surreal Throwing Muses epic . a soul-stirring collection [of] musical mini-masterpieces accompanied by lyrical prose vignettes exuding the same nimble friskiness and wry, subversive brilliance that characterized Hersh’s fantastic 2010 memoir. (Magnet, nine out of ten stars)Both brutal and magical . written with unimaginable warmth and such goofball humor, a perfectly imperfect encapsulation of what makes Hersh’s work so fortifying even as it devastates. (Popdose)Praise for Kristin Hersh: “It’s almost impossible to imagine the visceral bleats of singers like Corin Tucker or Marissa Paternoster without Kristin Hersh.” (Pitchfork)“Hersh is a fearless rock innovator.” (New York Times)“One of America’s finest songwriters.” (Simon Reynolds, author of Rip It Up and Start Again: Postpunk 1978- 84)Praise for Rat Girl: “Hersh has pretty much been to hell and back and lived to tell the tale...extremely well written.” (Huffington Post)“Sensitive and emotionally raw... it’s also wildly funny.” (New York Times Book )“With its reined in plot line and ethereal prose style, Rat Girl reads more like a novel...a pleasure to read.” (Slate)“An original beauty.” (Mary Gaitskill, author of Veronica and Don't Cry)“A thoroughly engrossing work by an original voice-hopefully the first of many.” (Kirkus s (starred review))Ms. Hersh’s prose delves into the memories that occasioned the songs, mingling tour incidents, childhood trauma, philosophical musings and hardheaded life lessons (The New York Times)From the Back CoverThe first new Throwing Muses album in a decade. This book contains: A CD of the 32- track Purgatory/Paradise album Full lyrics Short essay and stories by Kristin Hersh about each song Exclusive photographs and artworkIt also includes download instructions for these exclusives: A commentary track featuring Kristin Hersh David Narcizo An instrumental version of the full album Prepackaged mp3 and lossless versions of every track with embedded metadata, artwork and lyrics [cmues.ebook] Purgatory/Paradise By Kristin Hersh PDF [cmues.ebook] Purgatory/Paradise By Kristin Hersh Epub [cmues.ebook] Purgatory/Paradise By Kristin Hersh Ebook [cmues.ebook] Purgatory/Paradise By Kristin Hersh Rar [cmues.ebook] Purgatory/Paradise By Kristin Hersh Zip [cmues.ebook] Purgatory/Paradise By Kristin Hersh Read Online.

Fuckin like us!

For immediate release !15 July, 2014 Music is the WORD - Rock Musician Kristin Hersh Headlines !Christchurch Literary Festival Seminal indie-rock musician Kristin Hersh is coming to New Zealand to share her music and prose !at the WORD Christchurch Writers & Readers Festival, presented in association with The Press. Hersh will join literary heavyweights such as Eleanor Catton, Ruth Reichl and Meg Wolitzer at the multi-day festival, which runs from 27—31 August. She will perform her solo show WORDS + MUSIC on 30 August at the magnificent Transitional Cathedral and will make several other !appearances throughout the festival. WORD Christchurch’s Literary Director Rachael King, herself an ex-bass player with several Flying !Nun bands, has been a fan since she was 17. “I am thrilled to bring Kristin to Christchurch to help us redefine the parameters of what a literary festival can be. I had recently read her brilliant memoir, and saw that she was actively touring overseas, promoting both her music and her book. So I sent an invitation to New Zealand and !was overjoyed when she accepted.” In 1986, Throwing Muses was the first American band signed to the legendary label 4AD, which went on to acquire the Muses’ contemporaries, the Pixies and the Breeders. Since then, Hersh has forged a solo career, beginning with 1994’s Hips and Makers, formed 50 Foot Wave, and continued to play with the Throwing Muses; their latest album, Purgatory/Paradise, is !accompanied by a book of photos, essays, stories and lyrics. Hersh’s memoir Paradoxical Undressing tells the remarkable story of a year in her life when she was 17, playing in Throwing Muses, and was diagnosed with bi-polar disorder.

Enter the Flange Factory: Math the Band releases a multi-concept project Troubled times call for audacious measures. Math the Band is back, this time with a whirlwind of multimedia the likes of which has never been attempted. Their latest project, Flange Factory Five, is an immersive experience that includes a novel, record, game boy cartridge, energy drink and boutique guitar pedal. MTB, sometimes billed as “Math The Band The Band,” is the project of frontman Kevin Steinhauser and a rotating cast of characters, which currently features guitarist Max Holbrook, bassist Adam Waz and drummer Matt Zappa. The band has been operational for 20 years, and based in Providence for 12. A characteristically joyous effort, the Flange Factory Five features the band’s signature combination of glitchy, 8-bit keyboards over distorted guitars. A project like this requires the boundless energy they put forward in their ecstatic live shows, and it totally comes through on the recording. The uptempo “Dual of the Deer” features guitars and synth lines in roaring triumphiant harmony. “DKWIC” has a great Brian May-style guitar solo, and “Coach Says” is a hard-edged tune at the circle pit end of the spectrum. Stenhouser, who started the project in high school, puts every ounce of himself into the vocals. Along with great playing throughout, this album brings us the best of grit and nerddom, like a skater punk version of the music from Crash Bandicoot. But the video game sounds can belie the smart composition and clever lyrics. “Wet Cement” is ultra-catchy montage fodder about starting a new chapter: “The fear is exciting and I can’t wait to be born.” An additional treat is a suite of “Flange Factory Five” instrumental interludes that could be the jingle for the cartoon television show of the same name.

  • Keep on Moving: Mighty Good Music Offerings
Keep on Moving: Mighty Good Music Offerings The Mighty Good Boys – The God-King Gerald Ford Local folk rock outfit The Mighty Good Boys are out with their second album, The God-King Gerald Ford, and it’s a real banger, as the kids would say. The album represents a superb sophomore effort for the group, whose mature songwriting and ambitious musical arrangements set them apart in a crowded field of local rootsy rock ‘n’ roll bands. At times, Americana-style music seems to be at risk of becoming a fad, generified to the level of bands like the Lumineers. Like The Band, The MGB inject the traditional music template with their own brand of edge and electricity. Gerald Ford features decidedly more ambitious material than their debut album, It Ain’t Easy. They move fluidly from bar band blues rock to folk to sprawling, Crazy Horse-style guitar jams that show they’re putting it all on the line. Lyrically, the album is like multiple Dylan eras rolled into one, exploring themes of Christianity, morality, family and fractured relationships. The meditative “What’s a Man” deals with some age-old questions related to masculinity (“What’s a man to do without a woman to break his heart/what’s a man to prove without a woman to wrench his brain apart”), with an awesome, horn-laden outro to boot. “Jacob” is a beautiful pseudo-hymn ostensibly referencing the biblical story of Jacob and Esau, and “Oh God” wrestles with faith in the wake of tragedy. The album’s strengths lie in its simple presentation and imperfections; from the rawness and clutter come moments of utter clarity.

Over 400 guests were in attendance at the lavish black-tie affair. December greens, such as laurel, balsam and pine, decorated the nineteenth century mansion's arches, bannisters and sconces, reflecting this year's Victorian theme. Centerpieces of boxwood, decorated with gold ribbons, miniature lights, and white porcelain cherub ornaments, adorned each table at the Ball. The centerpieces and ornaments were given to the guests at evening's end as mementos. The $60,000 raised was the most in the event's nine year history. The donations from the Ball supplement Salve's scholarship monies which are awarded to deserving students.
