Nuove uscite su Southern: il debutto di Young James Long, gruppo com- Kevin Shields posto, tra gli altri, da Kirkland James (Tenderlion) e Taylor Young (Poli- phonic Spree, Young Heart Attack e PW Long); a fine di marzo è previsto un live dei Karate, 595, che potrebbe essere l’ultima uscita a nome del gruppo viste le intenzioni di scioglimento… Ancora reunion: Kevin Shields non ha escluso la possibilità di una reu- nion dei My Bloody Valentine, a sedici anni di distanza dall’ultimo disco, Loveless, anche se non ha fornito maggiori dettagli per il momento; per il Coachella Festival in aprile si realizzeranno altri due comeback: i Rage Against The Machine (il cui ritorno di Zack De La Rocha potrebbe veri- ficarsi solo per questa occasione) e Jesus And Mary Chain (non si sa al momento se la formazione sarà al completo)… In lavorazione da alcuni mesi il nuovo disco - ancora senza nome - di Bjork. L’uscita è prevista per la tarda primavera… In una intervista alla BBC, Brian Eno rivela che sarà lui a produrre il prossimo album dei Coldplay… Trent Reznor annuncia, con un comunicato sul sito ufficiale, l’uscita di 4 s e n t i r e a s c o l t a r e Year Zero, previsto per aprile, già in fase di missaggio… I Sigur Ros sono tornati in studio per lavorare sul prossimo disco previsto per fine 2007, con recupero anche di vecchio materiale mai pubblicato… Il nuovo disco delle sorelle Bianca e Sierra Casady, aka CocoRosie, The Adventures of Ghosthorse & Stillborn uscirà su Touch & Go il prossimo 9 aprile; registrato in Islanda, è prodotto da Valgeir Sigurdsson (Björk, Múm, Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy, Howie B). Il disco sarà preceduto dall’EP Four Winds il 6 marzo, che include la title track e 5 b-sides non incluse nell’album… News dagli Stereolab: è in lavorazione la loro soundtrack di un film fran- cese, La Vie d’Artiste, in uscita per settembre/ottobre su Too Pure/Beg- gars; intanto cominceranno a registrare il nuovo disco da febbraio, in previsione della pubblicazione prevista per settembre 2007… Album in uscita per Malcolm Middleton degli ormai disciolti Arab Strap: Conor Orbset A Brighter Beat, seguito di Into the Woods, sarà pubblicato su Fulltime Hobby/PIAS/Self il 2 marzo; Aidan Moffat con il suo progetto elettronico L. Bill Callahan lascia il moniker Smog e torna con un disco a suo nome (ma co-registrato e co- prodotto con Neil Michael Hagerty) dal titolo Walking on A Whaleheart, s e n t i r e a s c o l t a r e news a cura di Teresa Greco che uscirà a maggio, preceduto a marzo da un singolo, Diamond Dancer che conterrà la title-track e Taken, pezzo che non farà poi parte dell’al- bum… Ennesimo progetto per Danger Mouse: Underground Animals è un collettivo di produttori, ognuno dei quali registrerà una canzone con un artista noto ma sotto pseudonimo, per un disco in uscita nel 2007 su Downtown Records/Atlantic; il collettivo avrà un’identità virtuale, con personaggi animati dalla Adult Swim… Nuovo disco per i Tangerine Dream (con la formazione Edgar Froese, Thorsten Quaeschning, Chris Housle, Bernhard Beibl, Linda Spa, Gynt Beator, Thomas Beator, Iris Camaa e Vincent Nowak) in uscita ad aprile 2007; Madcap’s Flaming Duty è il titolo di un doppio CD/DVD, dedicato alla memoria di Syd Barrett scomparso lo scorso luglio. Il DVD contiene l’esecuzione in studio dell’intero album … In attesa del disco dei Radiohead, news da Jonny Greenwood: il 6 marzo uscirà per la Trojan Records una compilation reggae, Jonny Greenwood Is the Controller, 17 song scelte dal chitarrista dal ricchissimo catalogo dell’etichetta, con nomi storici quali Desmond Dekker, Lee Scratch Perry e Gregory Isaacs, tra gli altri… Rivelato il titolo del nuovo disco di Rufus Wainwright: Release The Stars sarà pubblicato a maggio 2007, disco prodotto da Neil Tennant dei Pet Shop Boys. Intanto Wainwrigh sta lavorando a uno spettacolo ispirato Danger Mouse a Judy Garland, che andrà in scena a Londra al Palladium in febbraio… La vita di Keith Moon, batterista degli Who morto a soli 32 anni nel 1978, sarà oggetto di un film, dal titolo ancora provvisorio (See Me Feel Me) con protagonista Mike Myers (Austin Powers) e con la collaborazione di Roger Daltrey. Inoltre, la morte di James Brown nel giorno di Natale ha portato a un’accelerazione nei lavori per il suo biopic, già in fase di progettazione: sarà Spike Lee a realizzare la pellicola per la Paramount, sulla base di una biografia (scritta da Steve Baigelman) autorizzata dallo stesso artista… Brent Liles, quarantatreenne bassista nei Social Distortion fino al 1984 e poi negli Agent Orange è morto dopo essere stato travolto da un camion mentre era in bicicletta su una strada di Placentia, in California; rimase nei Social Distortion dall’81 all’83, contribuendo a Mommy’s Little Mon- ster del 1983… Scomparsi il sassofonista jazz Michael Brecker, la compositrice Alice Coltrane, moglie di John, e Denny Doherty del quartetto pop Mamas and Papas… John Cale sarà in Italia a marzo per promuovere il Circus Live, doppio 6 s e n t i r e a s c o l t a r e CD che documenta i tour europei tra il 2004 e il 2006, in uscita il 22 feb- braio su EMI/Capitol .Due le date previste, il 10 marzo al teatro Sanzio di Urbino (per la rassegna Territorio Musicale) e il 12 marzo a Milano al Rainbow… Annunciati i primi nomi per il prossimo Primavera Sound Festival a Bar- cellona, previsto dal 31 maggio al 2 giugno prossimi.

Peel first came to recognition with her mesmerizing, hand-punched ‘music box’ EP ‘Rebox’, featuring co- vers of ‘80s bands Cocteau Twins, Soft Cell, & New Order. Having released her critically lauded solo de- but album ‘The Broken Wave’, Peel then formed The Magnetic North, a highly praised and expansive collaborative project with Simon Tong (The Verve, The Good The Bad And The Queen, Gorillaz) and Er- land Cooper (Erland & The Carnival). She also created a series of limited edition EPs, - the increasingly electronic ‘Nailhouse’ in 2013, followed by the stunning analogue beauty of ‘Fabricstate’ in 2014. A year later Peel released ‘Rebox 2’ with music-box covers of ‘Queen’ (originally performed by Perfume Genius), John Grant’s ‘Pale Green Ghosts’, Wild Beasts’ ‘Palace’, as well as her glorious cover of East India Youth’s triumphant ‘Heaven How Long’. 2016 has been yet another prolific year for Peel, so far including collaborations with Beyond The Wiz- ard’s Sleeve (aka Erol Alkan & Richard Norris) - she features on two BBC6 playlisted singles ‘Diagram Girl’ and ‘Creation’ - and composing under her new synth-based, space-age alter-ego Mary Casio with an experimental piece combining analogue electronics and a 33-piece colliery brass band (which debuted to a sold out Manchester audience in May).

    View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by Glasgow School of Art: RADAR 'I Spy': Mike Leigh in the Age of Britpop (A Critical Memoir) David Sweeney During the Britpop era of the 1990s, the name of Mike Leigh was invoked regularly both by musicians and the journalists who wrote about them. To compare a band or a record to Mike Leigh was to use a form of cultural shorthand that established a shared aesthetic between musician and filmmaker. Often this aesthetic similarity went undiscussed beyond a vague acknowledgement that both parties were interested in 'real life' rather than the escapist fantasies usually associated with popular entertainment. This focus on 'real life' involved exposing the ugly truth of British existence concealed behind drawing room curtains and beneath prim good manners, its 'secrets and lies' as Leigh would later title one of his films. I know this because I was there. Here's how I remember it all: Jarvis Cocker and Abigail's Party To achieve this exposure, both Leigh and the Britpop bands he influenced used a form of 'real world' observation that some critics found intrusive to the extent of voyeurism, particularly when their gaze was directed, as it so often was, at the working class. Jarvis Cocker, lead singer and lyricist of the band Pulp -exemplars, along with Suede and Blur, of Leigh-esque Britpop - described the band's biggest hit, and one of the definitive Britpop songs, 'Common People', as dealing with "a certain voyeurism on the part of the middle classes, a certain romanticism of working class culture and a desire to slum it a bit".

Hersh will join literary heavyweights such as Eleanor Catton, Ruth Reichl and Meg Wolitzer at the multi-day festival, which runs from 27—31 August. She will perform her solo show WORDS + MUSIC on 30 August at the magnificent Transitional Cathedral and will make several other !appearances throughout the festival. WORD Christchurch’s Literary Director Rachael King, herself an ex-bass player with several Flying !Nun bands, has been a fan since she was 17. “I am thrilled to bring Kristin to Christchurch to help us redefine the parameters of what a literary festival can be. I had recently read her brilliant memoir, and saw that she was actively touring overseas, promoting both her music and her book. So I sent an invitation to New Zealand and !was overjoyed when she accepted.” In 1986, Throwing Muses was the first American band signed to the legendary label 4AD, which went on to acquire the Muses’ contemporaries, the Pixies and the Breeders. Since then, Hersh has forged a solo career, beginning with 1994’s Hips and Makers, formed 50 Foot Wave, and continued to play with the Throwing Muses; their latest album, Purgatory/Paradise, is !accompanied by a book of photos, essays, stories and lyrics. Hersh’s memoir Paradoxical Undressing tells the remarkable story of a year in her life when she was 17, playing in Throwing Muses, and was diagnosed with bi-polar disorder.

Abstract This thesis examines written, audio-visual and musical representations of real-life British serial killers Myra Hindley and Ian Brady (the ‘Moors Murderers’) and Peter Sutcliffe (the ‘Yorkshire Ripper’), from the time of their crimes to the present day, and their proliferation beyond the cases’ immediate historical-legal context. Through the theoretical construct ‘Northientalism’ I interrogate such representations’ replication and engagement of stereotypes and anxieties accruing to the figure of the white working- class ‘Northern’ subject in these cases, within a broader context of pre-existing historical trajectories and generic conventions of Northern and true crime representation. Interrogating changing perceptions of the cultural functions and meanings of murderers in late-capitalist socio-cultural history, I argue that the underlying structure of true crime is the counterbalance between the exceptional and the everyday, in service of which its second crucial structuring technique – the depiction of physical detail – operates.
