As (former) Doctor Who author Lawrence Miles commented after seeing The Eleventh Hour: “And this week's real-world-thing-that's-a-bit-scary, following on from gasmasks, statues, and shadows, is a crack in some Polyfilla. Other things that might work as “real-world" enemies: Hoodies, mirrors, babies, abandoned golliwogs, cheese strings, and the letter "N".

Doctor Who tops programme sales, revenue for BBC. As reported last issue (‘Doctor Who vs the BBC!’, The Wall of Lies # 131), the July Chameleon Factor # 80 2011 annual report of the corporation’s commercial arm BBC Worldwide cites Doctor Who as primarily responsible for increasing its revenue 10.3 % over the financial year O u 2010/2011. N t No ow ! While no innate value is suggested, a comparison can be made. In 2007, the BBC bought 75% of travel franchise Lonely Planet, followed by the February 2011 pur- chase of the remaining 25%. This second sale cost £42.1m, indicating the value of the entire brand could be $257.4m AUD. BBC Worldwide calls this a “global brand”, along with Doctor Who, Top Gear, Dancing with the Stars and BBC Earth.

BBC Worldwide said that the top five selling programme titles in the year to the end of March 2011 were the fifth series of Doctor Who, the debut series of Sherlock, the 15th and 16th series of Top Gear, and Human Planet.

With Sci Fi Channel showing Tom Baker Doctor Who, Nickelodeon having the rights to The Sarah Jane Adventures and Ten buying and co-producing K-9, SFSA magazine # 28 commercial television in Australia is understandably eager to share in Doctor Who.
