Final FINAL Adelaide, March--April 2012 WEATHER: Autumn Free Abacus, blabacus! by staff writers Slide rule with pretensions goes haywire. We ran a figure of 1000 miles through Wolfram|Alpha, the computational knowledge engine, to receive “= distance the Proclaimers would walk, just to be the man that walks a thousand miles to fall down at your door.” So aside from useful yet boring things such as the speed of sound at 100,000ft, Fermat's little theorem or the distance from San Francisco to Tokyo, you can now enjoy the entertaining but frivolous “How many times can a man turn his head?”, “What have I got in my pocket?” or “What's the first rule of Fight Club?” Or input “They say this cat Shaft is a bad mother ...” O to return “Shut your mouth! I'm talkin' 'bout Shaft ut t N No (Then we can dig it)” ... ow Stephen Wolfram gets down ! “According to the theme from the 1971 film Shaft.” and gets funky. ABC renews BBC deal by staff writers

BBC Worldwide must offer ABC Doctor Who exclusively.

The Australian Broadcasting Corporation has renewed its first-option deal (also known SFSA magazine # 29 as an output deal) with the British Broadcasting Corporation for a further three years. This ensures ABC will continue to receive first refusal on drama such as Doctor Who, O Ou but not on programmes they have already rejected such as Sherlock. ut So oo n! The second series of and Mark Gatiss’ take on Sherlock Holmes ! received an average rating of 781,000 (five city metro, rounded to nearest 1000) on first broadcast on Nine from 15 February. By contrast the 2011 Doctor Who Christmas special , The Widow and The Wardrobe received 749,000 viewers on its Australian premiere on 26 December 2011. The Monday to Friday Doctor Who repeats rate below 160,000, placing the show about 20th of digital only programs.

The Wall of Lies asked the BBC Worldwide spokesperson cited in the press release announcing the renewal for clarification and if there was any other Doctor Who news, and received this comment: “No 'fraid, not, but you should keep an eye on the Doctor Who Convention in the next couple of weeks if you can.” SFSA magazine # 30

The ABC2 controller said, “The intention is to show Doctor Who Confidential on ABC2 after Doctor Who every weeknight, where the episode is a regular series episode. Occasions where the Doctor Who episode has a longer-than- usual duration will be assessed individually as they arise and a decision made based on schedule timing requirements. Specials will not be followed by Confidential.”
