  • A Message from the President
A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT Residents of Ottawa share a unique Canadian-ness because of our proximity to Parliament Hill, the Supreme Court of Canada and the National War Memorial, among other places. Every November, upwards of 20,000 people crowd onto Confederation Square on Remembrance Day to mark Canada’s role in fighting for freedom and peace around the world. We honour the dead and celebrate the military men and women who returned home. Many ONC women are daughters, sisters, mothers and wives of military personnel. I am the mother of a war veteran. If you have never attended the Remembrance Day ceremonies downtown, I would urge you to do so at least once in your lifetime. Be early, dress very warmly, and prepare to walk a ways as the downtown core is cut off for the parades. The toll of the Peace Tower bell at the 11th hour, the 21-gun artillery salute, the sombre signature songs of the youth choirs, the fly-past of Canada’s fighter jets and the Parade of Honour by Canada’s military are stirring beyond words. Lest We Forget. WANTED: New Webmistress (Training Provided!) We need your help! We are thinking ahead to next year as we plan a replacement for our webmistress. Nominations for next year’s board are a long way off (February 2019), but we need someone to slip into the role of maintaining our website and our closed Facebook page. ----- will be moving on to our alumni group in July. Some comfort with computers would be preferable and anyone interested will want to stay in this role for two years, if possible.

  • Bank Stree Main Street
Next Deadline II OSCAR February 24,1995 THE OTTAWA SOUTH COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION REVIEW Vol. 22 No. 6 OUR 20TH YEAR! FEBRUARY 1995 LET’S PUT THE HEART BACK BANK STREE INTO BANK MAIN STREET BY PETER HECHT Main Street is the centuries long evolution of the footpath in earliest clusters villages into the shopping street of our present cities. Main Street has been lifeblood of a community. Main Street, has been the place where people lived, traded, worked and played. People vied to build their businesses and homes on Main Street where they could be seen and visited. As villages grew into towns, so did Main Street. But it remained the heart pf the community. This was where commerce and social life took place. Citizens did their daily shopping here and looked forward to meeting friends and neighbors to learn the latest news both ofcommunity and world. Now, in our own lifetimes, this has all changed. Main Street has become a through route to somewhere else. People, no longer welcome; are obstacles to the safe passage of cars. The car, newspaper, television and telephone have persuaded us into removing ourselves from Main Street life. But the needs of Main Street remain. Why else would strip malls and shopping centres, the suburb builder’s answer to Main Street, increasingly resemble traditional Main Street? Here in Old Ottawa South, we don’t need a pseudo Main Street We’ve got Bank Street and it is still alive and kicking. A bit drab and dowdy at the edges perhaps, but the heart is still beating.
