Bank Stree Main Street Next Deadline II OSCAR February 24,1995 THE OTTAWA SOUTH COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION REVIEW Vol. 22 No. 6 OUR 20TH YEAR! FEBRUARY 1995 LET’S PUT THE HEART BACK BANK STREE INTO BANK MAIN STREET BY PETER HECHT Main Street is the centuries long evolution of the footpath in earliest clusters villages into the shopping street of our present cities. Main Street has been lifeblood of a community. Main Street, has been the place where people lived, traded, worked and played. People vied to build their businesses and homes on Main Street where they could be seen and visited. As villages grew into towns, so did Main Street. But it remained the heart pf the community. This was where commerce and social life took place. Citizens did their daily shopping here and looked forward to meeting friends and neighbors to learn the latest news both ofcommunity and world. Now, in our own lifetimes, this has all changed. Main Street has become a through route to somewhere else. People, no longer welcome; are obstacles to the safe passage of cars. The car, newspaper, television and telephone have persuaded us into removing ourselves from Main Street life. But the needs of Main Street remain. Why else would strip malls and shopping centres, the suburb builder’s answer to Main Street, increasingly resemble traditional Main Street? Here in Old Ottawa South, we don’t need a pseudo Main Street We’ve got Bank Street and it is still alive and kicking. A bit drab and dowdy at the edges perhaps, but the heart is still beating. We have a core of staple businesses serving our daily needs and interesting enterprises are continuing to spring up. A new merchants’ association is starting up. Is Main Street dead? With this renaissance underway and with the upcoming reconstruction/of the Bank Street roadway, the removal of the power poles and the traffic study, we have the chance to make Bank Street back into our Main Street. Let’s Put the Heart Back Into Bank! Over the next few months, OSCAR will be bringing you ideas and articles about some of the things we can do to rejuvenate and improve the heart of our Old Ottawa South community. CONTRIBUTIONS NEEDED! OSCAR needs your articles, photos, poems and stories, each and every month. This is your Streetscape where pedestrians and cars have equal rights, this common sight in Edmonton shows paper, without you, we cannot succeed. what can be done to enhance a shopping district when vehicular traffic is not the only concern. • A Message from the President
A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT Residents of Ottawa share a unique Canadian-ness because of our proximity to Parliament Hill, the Supreme Court of Canada and the National War Memorial, among other places. Every November, upwards of 20,000 people crowd onto Confederation Square on Remembrance Day to mark Canada’s role in fighting for freedom and peace around the world. We honour the dead and celebrate the military men and women who returned home. Many ONC women are daughters, sisters, mothers and wives of military personnel. I am the mother of a war veteran. If you have never attended the Remembrance Day ceremonies downtown, I would urge you to do so at least once in your lifetime. Be early, dress very warmly, and prepare to walk a ways as the downtown core is cut off for the parades. The toll of the Peace Tower bell at the 11th hour, the 21-gun artillery salute, the sombre signature songs of the youth choirs, the fly-past of Canada’s fighter jets and the Parade of Honour by Canada’s military are stirring beyond words. Lest We Forget. WANTED: New Webmistress (Training Provided!) We need your help! We are thinking ahead to next year as we plan a replacement for our webmistress. Nominations for next year’s board are a long way off (February 2019), but we need someone to slip into the role of maintaining our website and our closed Facebook page. ----- will be moving on to our alumni group in July. Some comfort with computers would be preferable and anyone interested will want to stay in this role for two years, if possible.

NEWSLETTER NOVEMBER 16, 2018 Councillor’s Column KEEPING YOU INFORMED SHAD QADRI – WARD 6 - STITTSVILLE Deer Run Dry Pond Update As many of you know, the City has been making changes to the Deer Run Dry Pond storm system. I am happy to report that the major work is complete and residents can be assured that the risk of backyard flooding has been reduced thanks to this project. Improvements to the Deer Run Dry Pond started in September 2018 and the project reached Substantial Completion on November 8, 2018. The purpose of this work was to improve the level of service of the Deer Run Dry Pond by increasing its storage capacity and adding a storm sewer on Snowberry Way. Additionally, the project included the transplantation of several trees as well as the planting of new trees and shrubs along the Jefferson Trail. The remaining work includes minor site cleanup, the installation of inlet control devices, and the removal of the construction site office. COUNCILLOR’S COLUMN 1 NEWSLETTER NOVEMBER 16, 2018 Many thanks to City staff for their continued service to our community. The improvements to the Deer Run Dry Pond will bring peace to this corner of Stittsville. RECOMMANDATIONS DU RAPPORT Que la Commission du transport en commun prenne acte du présent rapport aux fins d'information. BACKGROUND Shortly after the COVID-19 pandemic spread to Canada, starting on March 25, 2020, OC Transpo service levels were reduced by approximately 50 percent. This was done 2 to preserve operational capacity in case the virus had been transmitted much more quickly through the population than proved to be the case. Measures were taken to ensure OC Transpo had sufficient operational capacity to cover off operations and accommodate staff that had to self-isolate or quarantine due to having contracted COVID-19.These measures were possible because, with the initial lockdown, ridership on the OC Transpo declined by approximately 85 percent, as people stayed home from work, school, and other activities. On June 1, 2020, the Transit Commission approved the OC Transpo Transit Service Recovery Plan – COVID-19 (ACS2020-TSD-TS-0003), returning the system to normal seasonal service.
