SHAD QADRI – WARD 6 - STITTSVILLE

Deer Run Dry Pond Update

As many of you know, the City has been making changes to the Deer Run Dry Pond storm system. I am happy to report that the major work is complete and residents can be assured that the risk of backyard flooding has been reduced thanks to this project.

Improvements to the Deer Run Dry Pond started in September 2018 and the project reached Substantial Completion on November 8, 2018.

The purpose of this work was to improve the level of service of the Deer Run Dry Pond by increasing its storage capacity and adding a storm sewer on Snowberry Way. Additionally, the project included the transplantation of several trees as well as the planting of new trees and shrubs along the Jefferson Trail. The remaining work includes minor site cleanup, the installation of inlet control devices, and the removal of the construction site office.

Stittsville Park Updates

During my time as your Councillor it has been my pleasure to build and renew parks in our community. As Stittsville grows, it is important that we dedicate spaces for public enjoyment and recreation; but it is also important that we remember the parks in the areas that have already developed. These three public parks: Bryanston Gate Park, West Ridge Park and Frigewood Park will be renewed in the coming months so that they can continue to serve the children and families of Stittsville.

Liard Street Paving and Speed Humps

As part of ongoing efforts to curb speeding in our neighbourhoods, speed humps were recently installed on Liard Street. The new speed bumps are 80 mm in height as is standard throughout the City of .

Here is the rationale for the general speed hump specs that I received from the Area Traffic Management (ATM) group:

“The speed hump design(s) that we use on City of Ottawa roads are designs that have been developed/adopted by the Transportation Association of Canada (TAC). The 80 mm height is actually the maximum height that is recommended for these profiles (sinusoidal and flat-top). The reason that we try to adhere to these approved designs is largely due to the desire to minimize our exposure to liability. It would not be responsible for staff to effect arbitrary changes to a tested and approved design. These types of changes could also expose the City to liability claims if collisions or damage to vehicles were to be involved. “

Previously, Liard Street had 76 mm temporary speed humps.

Although the permanent speed humps are only slightly taller than the temporary ones, they will feel different. The Temporary Speed Humps (manufactured by Traffic Logix) are constructed with rubber and they sit on top of the asphalt (therefore there is a small lip at the transition from the road to the speed hump) whereas the permanent speed humps are integrated into the road using the same materials and there is no transition. This might explain why there is a perception that the temporary speed humps were taller and more effective; however, the new speed bumps do meet the safety regulations and should discourage drivers from exceeding 40 km/hr.

Christmas Gift Suggestion

Do you have a political junkie on your Christmas list? There is a new book available about Ottawa municipal politics: Blight by Marc Aubin. The historic novel follows the sad story of residents affected by an urban renewal scheme in the 1960s in Lowertown, Ottawa. It also jumps to the early 2000s when the same community was fighting for more recent urban issues in the post-amalgamation years.

Marc Aubin is a fifth generation Ottawa resident and the former president of the Lowertown Community Association. Over the past two decades he has accumulated stories about Ottawa’s struggles and identity. Blight would make a great gift for anyone with an interest in Ottawa.
