November 16, 2018 NEWSLETTER NOVEMBER 16, 2018 Councillor’s Column KEEPING YOU INFORMED SHAD QADRI – WARD 6 - STITTSVILLE Deer Run Dry Pond Update As many of you know, the City has been making changes to the Deer Run Dry Pond storm system. I am happy to report that the major work is complete and residents can be assured that the risk of backyard flooding has been reduced thanks to this project. Improvements to the Deer Run Dry Pond started in September 2018 and the project reached Substantial Completion on November 8, 2018. The purpose of this work was to improve the level of service of the Deer Run Dry Pond by increasing its storage capacity and adding a storm sewer on Snowberry Way. Additionally, the project included the transplantation of several trees as well as the planting of new trees and shrubs along the Jefferson Trail. The remaining work includes minor site cleanup, the installation of inlet control devices, and the removal of the construction site office. COUNCILLOR’S COLUMN 1 NEWSLETTER NOVEMBER 16, 2018 Many thanks to City staff for their continued service to our community. The improvements to the Deer Run Dry Pond will bring peace to this corner of Stittsville. Last Chance to Donate to the All that Glam Fundraiser Please stop by the Ward Office at the GRC to donate your gently-used jewelry and handbags for a good cause. All That Glam began as the brainchild of high school student, Eva von Jagow, as a way to raise money to fight food insecurity in Nunavut through the Breakfast Club of Canada. Since 2013, All That Glam has been donating 100% of its profits to feed hungry children. This year funds will be directed to an elementary school in Arviat, Nunavut. Donated items will be “up-cycled” and sold at the upcoming sale. Sale Date: November 24, 2018 Time: 8:00 am – 2:00 pm Location: Kanata Recreation Complex, 100 Charlie Rogers Place, Kanata NEWSLETTER 2 NEWSLETTER NOVEMBER 16, 2018 Stittsville Park Updates During my time as your Councillor it has been my pleasure to build and renew parks in our community. As Stittsville grows, it is important that we dedicate spaces for public enjoyment and recreation; but it is also important that we remember the parks in the areas that have already developed. These three public parks: Bryanston Gate Park, West Ridge Park and Frigewood Park will be renewed in the coming months so that they can continue to serve the children and families of Stittsville. Bryanston Gate Park NEWSLETTER 3 NEWSLETTER NOVEMBER 16, 2018 Residents of Bryanston Gate are getting a playground refresh. Site preparation should be under way with the scheduled demolition of the existing play equipment today, November 16, 2018. The project should be completed by the end of May 2019, weather permitting. The demolition and site preparation this year will make the construction and completion of the new playground easier and quicker next spring. West Ridge Park The comment period for West Ridge Park is now closed after having been posted since October 17, 2018. After reviewing all comments, the community has selected concept B as their preferred option, pictured above. NEWSLETTER 4 NEWSLETTER NOVEMBER 16, 2018 Fringewood Park The comment period for Fringewood Park is now closed after having been publicly posted since October 4, 2018. Thanks to your feedback, residents can look forward to the installation of concept B (pictured above) next year. NEWSLETTER 5 NEWSLETTER NOVEMBER 16, 2018 Liard Street Paving and Speed Humps As part of ongoing efforts to curb speeding in our neighbourhoods, speed humps were recently installed on Liard Street. The new speed bumps are 80 mm in height as is standard throughout the City of Ottawa. Here is the rationale for the general speed hump specs that I received from the Area Traffic Management (ATM) group: “The speed hump design(s) that we use on City of Ottawa roads are designs that have been developed/adopted by the Transportation Association of Canada (TAC). The 80 mm height is actually the maximum height that is recommended for these profiles (sinusoidal and flat-top). The reason that we try to adhere to these approved designs is largely due to the desire to minimize our exposure to liability. It would not be responsible for staff to effect arbitrary changes to a tested and approved design. These types of changes could also expose the City to liability claims if collisions or damage to vehicles were to be involved. “ Previously, Liard Street had 76 mm temporary speed humps. Although the permanent speed humps are only slightly taller than the temporary ones, they will feel different. The Temporary Speed Humps (manufactured by Traffic Logix) are constructed with rubber and they sit on top of the asphalt (therefore there is a small lip at the transition from the road to the speed hump) whereas the permanent speed humps are integrated into the road using the same materials and there is no transition. This might explain why there is a perception that the temporary speed humps were taller and more effective; however, the new speed bumps do meet the safety regulations and should discourage drivers from exceeding 40 km/hr. NEWSLETTER 6 NEWSLETTER NOVEMBER 16, 2018 Cheer Sport Sharks Holiday Gift & Craft Fair The Cheer Sport Sharks will be hosting their annual Holiday Gift & Craft Fair on Saturday November 17th from 10am to 2:30pm in the community hall at the Johnny Leroux Arena (10 Warner-Colpitts Lane, Stittsville). You may also wish to consider ways you can volunteer to help out the society. Sitting on the Board is a way to learn about the inner workings of the society, and those on the board have a hand in organizing events and decision making of society projects. Our guest speaker this year is Kim Bonin, the individual who spearheaded the creation of the community gardens behind Jo-Jo's, A Newfoundland native who grew up gardening, Kim missed being able to grow her own vegetables on a larger scale, so looked to creating a way that she and many others in our community could fulfill their dream of "growing their own". Through her talk, Kim will explain her vision, the progress that has been made, and the future of the four step plan of the gardens. Kim feels that, through gardening, one's wellbeing, both physically and mentally, is enhanced. We look forward to seeing you at the AGM next week. Do bring along a friend, spouse, neighbour- anyone who enjoys the pursuit of gardening or would like to learn more about it. It's a pleasant evening with something for everyone. • A Message from the President
A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT Residents of Ottawa share a unique Canadian-ness because of our proximity to Parliament Hill, the Supreme Court of Canada and the National War Memorial, among other places. Every November, upwards of 20,000 people crowd onto Confederation Square on Remembrance Day to mark Canada’s role in fighting for freedom and peace around the world. We honour the dead and celebrate the military men and women who returned home. Many ONC women are daughters, sisters, mothers and wives of military personnel. I am the mother of a war veteran. If you have never attended the Remembrance Day ceremonies downtown, I would urge you to do so at least once in your lifetime. Be early, dress very warmly, and prepare to walk a ways as the downtown core is cut off for the parades. The toll of the Peace Tower bell at the 11th hour, the 21-gun artillery salute, the sombre signature songs of the youth choirs, the fly-past of Canada’s fighter jets and the Parade of Honour by Canada’s military are stirring beyond words. Lest We Forget. WANTED: New Webmistress (Training Provided!) We need your help! We are thinking ahead to next year as we plan a replacement for our webmistress. Nominations for next year’s board are a long way off (February 2019), but we need someone to slip into the role of maintaining our website and our closed Facebook page. ----- will be moving on to our alumni group in July. Some comfort with computers would be preferable and anyone interested will want to stay in this role for two years, if possible.

  • Bank Stree Main Street
Next Deadline II OSCAR February 24,1995 THE OTTAWA SOUTH COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION REVIEW Vol. 22 No. 6 OUR 20TH YEAR! FEBRUARY 1995 LET’S PUT THE HEART BACK BANK STREE INTO BANK MAIN STREET BY PETER HECHT Main Street is the centuries long evolution of the footpath in earliest clusters villages into the shopping street of our present cities. Main Street has been lifeblood of a community. Main Street, has been the place where people lived, traded, worked and played. People vied to build their businesses and homes on Main Street where they could be seen and visited. As villages grew into towns, so did Main Street. But it remained the heart pf the community. This was where commerce and social life took place. Citizens did their daily shopping here and looked forward to meeting friends and neighbors to learn the latest news both ofcommunity and world. Now, in our own lifetimes, this has all changed. Main Street has become a through route to somewhere else. People, no longer welcome; are obstacles to the safe passage of cars. The car, newspaper, television and telephone have persuaded us into removing ourselves from Main Street life. But the needs of Main Street remain. Why else would strip malls and shopping centres, the suburb builder’s answer to Main Street, increasingly resemble traditional Main Street? Here in Old Ottawa South, we don’t need a pseudo Main Street We’ve got Bank Street and it is still alive and kicking. A bit drab and dowdy at the edges perhaps, but the heart is still beating.

RECOMMANDATIONS DU RAPPORT Que la Commission du transport en commun prenne acte du présent rapport aux fins d'information. BACKGROUND Shortly after the COVID-19 pandemic spread to Canada, starting on March 25, 2020, OC Transpo service levels were reduced by approximately 50 percent. This was done 2 to preserve operational capacity in case the virus had been transmitted much more quickly through the population than proved to be the case. Measures were taken to ensure OC Transpo had sufficient operational capacity to cover off operations and accommodate staff that had to self-isolate or quarantine due to having contracted COVID-19.These measures were possible because, with the initial lockdown, ridership on the OC Transpo declined by approximately 85 percent, as people stayed home from work, school, and other activities. On June 1, 2020, the Transit Commission approved the OC Transpo Transit Service Recovery Plan – COVID-19 (ACS2020-TSD-TS-0003), returning the system to normal seasonal service.
