Corpus Historicus Conference Information Corpus Historicus Conference Information The Venue The conference will take place in the building of the Faculty of Philology, University of Silesia, located on the campus in Sosnowiec. The full address is: ul. Gen. S. Grota-Roweckiego 5 41-205 Sosnowiec You can look it up on Maps here: https://goo.gl/maps/5h72ZvDWwRk. Sosnowiec is well-connected to other Polish cities, so getting here shouldn’t be a problem. The closest large city is Katowice, and we expect that many of our guests will arrive there first. Also, though Sosnowiec has several hotels (see below), we expect that some of you may find your accommodation in Katowice instead. Travel Information The following airports may be used to fly to Poland. All of them are well connected with major European airports (details on travel to and from them are provided below): Warsaw Chopin (WAW), https://www.lotnisko-chopina.pl/en/index.html; Warsaw Modlin (WMI), http://en.modlinairport.pl/; Kraków (KRK), http://www.krakowairport.pl/en/; Katowice (KTW), http://www.katowice-airport.com/en/index/index/0; the closest to the conference venue. Flying to Warsaw (Warszawa) Whether you fly to Warsaw Chopin (WAW) or Warsaw Modlin Airport (WMI), your next step is to get to the city centre. From there, you’ll be able to take a train to both Sosnowiec and Katowice. The best way to get from Warsaw Modlin Airport to the city centre is by bus. Get on at the airport (stop: Modlin Airport WMI) and get off at the stop Warsaw City Centre (Palace of Culture). Depending on the type of the bus, the ticket is between 9 and 33 PLN, and the travel takes between 40 and 60 minutes. Bus times can be checked and tickets booked at https://www.modlinbus.com/en#buy-ticket. From there, you’ll have to walk a short distance to the Warsaw Central Station (Warszawa Centralna). The walk is about 700 m / 9 minutes long: The best way to get from Warsaw Chopin Airport to the city centre is by train. Get on at the airport (station: Warszawa Lotnisko Chopina) and get off at Warsaw Central Station (station: Warszawa Centralna). The ticket is about 7 PLN and the journey takes about 20 minutes. From Warsaw Central Station, you can get a direct train to both Sosnowiec (station: Sosnowiec Główny) and Katowice (station: Katowice). The journey times range from about 2,5 to 5 hours. The ticket prices range from around 60 to 150 PLN – the price depends on the type and class of the train you intend to take. All train times can be checked at http://rozklad-pkp.pl/en/. Some tickets may also be booked through this website. Otherwise, tickets can easily be bought from ticket machines and at ticket windows in the stations. For how to get from Sosnowiec and Katowice stations to the conference venue, see below. Flying to Cracow (Kraków) The best way to get from the Kraków Airport to Katowice is by a direct coach (shuttle bus) from the airport to the main bus station in Katowice. Check times and book tickets at: Tiger Express, http://www.tigerexpress.eu/en/. Get on at Kraków Airport and get off at Katowice (the main bus station). Note that since it’s only March, timetables for June/July may not be available just yet. Currently the journey takes 55 minutes, and the ticket costs 7,4 EUR. Neobus, http://en.neobus.pl/rozklad-jazdy. Get on at Kraków Airport Balice and get off at Katowice D. A. ul. Skargi 19 (the main bus station). There are also buses and trains you can take from Kraków city centre, rather than directly from the airport, to Katowice; let us know if you’d like us to assist you with planning this route instead. For how to get from Katowice to the conference venue, see below. Flying to Katowice If you fly to Katowice, your next step will be to get to the city centre. The best way to get there is by bus. The travel takes up to 50 minutes. The ticket is about 27 PLN. Depending on the place you intend to stay, you can get off at one of the following bus stops: Sosnowiec Milowice Skrzyżowanie, Katowice Strefa Kultury, Katowice Sokolska, or Katowice Dworzec PKP (Katowice train station). You can check the bus times at: http://pkm.katowice.pl/lotnisko/rozklad-jazdy/lotnisko-katowice/. Unfortunately, this website is only available in Polish. If you’re using Google Chrome, you can translate it easily by right-clicking anywhere on the website and choosing “Translate to English” from the drop-down menu; the translation is good. You can book tickets at: https://bilety.pkm.katowice.pl/index.php?lang=en. Getting to the conference venue You’ll find the conference venue in this location: https://goo.gl/maps/5h72ZvDWwRk. TOURISM IN WARSAW REPORT 2018 Introduction 2 Key data 3 1. Warsaw – selected social and economic information 4 2. Accessibility 8 3. Tourist accommodation 12 4. Tourist attractions 16 5. Attractions off the beaten track 20 6. Tourist traffic characteristics 24 7. Meetings industry 28 8. Warsaw’s image 32 Sources 36 Warsaw’s pulse beats to the rhythm of its residents: not only in the city centre but in all 18 districts of the capital. Each one is a mosaic of colourful vibes, authentic stories and unique tastes. Within these districts we are witnessing a revitalisation of post- industrial spaces, the development of new estates and attractions as well as the creation of business and recreation zones. The former industrial districts of Wola and Powiśle are undergoing change; the former “Koneser” vodka distillery in Praga district has transformed into a modern space where all types of outdoor events take place and are open to all. Warsaw’s residents more often spend time outside the city centre and value the variety and atmosphere of all Warsaw’s districts, and in so doing, inspire those visiting the capital to discover places off the beaten track. A popular meeting place is beside the River Vistula: one can relax here along the modern boulevards and well-kept beaches, do sport or explore the “wild” bank, which is a part of the protected “Natura 2000” network. It is easy to relax outdoors in any of Warsaw’s dozens of green squares, parks and gardens which regularly host a variety of events including the popular breakfast markets and ‘eco bazaars’, in line with the worldwide trend in health and an ecological lifestyle.

This result was approximately 1.8 percentage points better compared to the ACI airports. Taking into account the fact that for the majority of other indicators the Polish market also exceeded the benchmarks of Europe and the World, the past quarter should be considered as good. The following events deserve special attention: the stoppage of Ryanair’s expansion, a significant change in the network to Germany and a development of long-haul charter offer. • Despite the increase in passenger numbers, the Polish market saw a decrease in the number of operations by 2.5% in 2014. This result was possible through the increase of the average number of passengers per flight, as a consequence of increasing the average aircraft size by about 5 places and the higher seat factor by about 3 percentage points .

  • CONSUMPTION PATTERNS of FOREIGN TOURISTS in POLAND TRAVELLING with Lccs and THEIR ECONOMIC EFFECTS in the Light of the Results of a Pilot Survey
KNUV 2017; 3(53): 148-172 Tomasz Dziedzic Szkoła Główna Turystyki i Rekreacji – Warszawa Kacper Osiecki Bioscope Research Ltd. – Warszawa conSumption pAtternS oF Foreign TOURIStS in polAnd trAVelling with lccs And their economic eFFectS in the light oF the reSultS oF A pilot SurVey Summary The article aims to present and interpret the results of a pilot survey carried out among passengers at the Warsaw Modlin Airport in 2016. It is discussed in the context of the development of the Polish airline market in recent years, selected elements of its structure and changes thereof. Flights to and from the Modlin airport are solely operated by low-cost airlines, which significantly facilitates access to and the separation of the group of passengers who do not permanently reside in Poland (defined as foreign visitors) as well as determining their characteristics. The survey whose main results are presented below was a pilot study, designed as the first stage of a larger research project mostly aimed at estimat- ing the impact of inbound tourist traffic served by LCCs on the economy and, indirectly, also on public finance (the budget, taxes). The objective of the first stage of the survey referred to in the article was to test the hypothesis that LCC passengers permanently residing abroad had attributes which called for further research. Taking into consideration a number of important criteria, their image does not significantly differ from the characteristics of all tourists visiting Poland. Neither do they account for a marginal share of air transport in the low-cost segment. In the opinion of the Author, the hypothesis was confirmed by the pilot survey results.

  • European Hub Airports – Assessment of Constraints for Market Power in the Local Catchment and on the Transfer Market
Technische Universität Dresden Fakultät Verkehrswissenschaften „Friedrich List” Institut für Wirtschaft und Verkehr DISSERTATION European Hub Airports – Assessment of Constraints for Market Power in the Local Catchment and on the Transfer Market zur Erlangung des akademischen Grades Doctor rerum politicarum (Dr. rer. pol.) im Rahmen des Promotionsverfahrens an der Fakultät Verkehrswissenschaften „Friedrich List“ der Technischen Universität Dresden vorgelegt von: Annika Paul, geb. Reinhold geb. am 30.09.1981 in Gifhorn Gutachter: Prof. Dr. rer. pol. habil. Bernhard Wieland Prof. Dr. rer. pol. Hans-Martin Niemeier Ort und Tage der Einreichung: Dresden, 23. Januar 2018 Ort und Tag der Verteidigung: Dresden, 04. Juni 2018 Abstract Airports have long been considered as an industry in which firms are able to exert significant market power. Nowadays, there is controversial discussion whether airports face a degree of competition which is sufficient to constrain potentially abusive behaviour resulting from this market power. The level of competition encountered by European airports has hence been evaluated by analysing the switching potential of both airlines and passengers between different airports, for example. The research within this thesis contributes to the field of airport competition by analysing the degree of potential competition 36 European hub airports face on their origin-destination market in their local catchments as well as on the transfer market within the period from 2000 to 2016. For this purpose, a two-step approach is applied for each market, with first analysing the degree of market concentration, using the Herfindahl Hirschman Index as a measure, for each destination offered at the hub airports and the respective development over time.
