DGSR Fauna 1 Discovering Great Sandy Region Chapter 5 Animals of the Dunes The animals of Fraser Island and Cooloola are not readily apparent to the casual observer. The most obvious are birds and dingoes. Despite the obscurity of the fauna it presents an impressive range to those with the patience to explore and discover. This is because much of the fauna is lies buried in the sand or hidden by the great bulk of biomass or else it is either well camouflaged, very timid, or very small. However, it is not necessary to see animals in the wild to be attracted by them. Tens of thousands of anglers are used to searching out invisible targets as they seek the pelagic tailor during the winter months, and bream, whiting trevally and flathead at any time of the year. However, there are many other interesting animals in the sea around Fraser Island and Cooloola than those which delight the anglers. These mammals and reptiles are not the targets of anglers but the subject of much interest of those who are seeking to understand the environment and the many niches in and around Fraser Island and Cooloola. Although Fraser Island and Cooloola lack large populations of bigger terrestrial animals, they boast many rare and unusual species. One study in Cooloola alone identified over 300 species of ants, many new to science. In the aquatic environment the acidity of some of the peaty swamps has been so hostile that a specialized group of frogs known as "acid frogs" has evolved to fill this unique niche. -

Prior to 1991, this fauna group received scant attention in research or forest management. However, legislative and policy changes in the early 1990s have largely reversed this situation. This review documents the changes in forest management that now require closer attention be given to the requirements of forest herpetofauna. We also provide an overview of research that contributes to a greater understanding of the management requirements of forest-dependent species. The introduction of the Endangered Fauna (Interim Protection) Act 1991 in NSW led to the need for comprehensive surveys of all forest vertebrate wildlife and detailed consideration of potential impacts on forest species listed as endangered by this Act. -

Full registration data for all identifiable non-fossil primary and secondary type specimens of reptiles and amphibians currently or previously in the Australian Museum are presented, and the current status and registration history of these specimens described, together with any discrepancies between these data and those published in original descriptions. The current identity of the taxa represented by these types is given, together with reference to the original proposer of synonymies and new combinations. Several changes to the herpetological collections of the Shine, 1985; King & Miller, 1985; Tyler, 1985; Cogger, Australian Museum have prompted us to prepare this 1986; Shea, 1987a; King, 1988; Ingram & Covacevich, second, updated catalogue of the amphibian and reptile 1989; Underwood & Stimson, 1990; Hutchinson & type specimens, though following only 20 years after the Donnellan, 1992), culminating in an application to the first herpetological type catalogue for the collection International Commission for Zoological Nomenclature (Cogger, 1979).
