Saki / H.H. Munro 1870-1916 Bios http://www.litgothic.com/Authors/saki.html Up to now, little has been known about Hector Hugh Munro except that he used the pen name “Saki”; that he wrote a number of witty short stories, two novels, several plays, and a history of Russia; and that he was killed in World War I. His friend Rothay Reynolds published “A Memoir of H. H. Munro” in Saki’s The Toys of Peace (1919), and Munro’s sister Ethel furnished a brief “Biography of Saki” for a posthumous collection of his work entitled The Square Egg and Other Sketches (1924). A. J. Langguth’s Saki is the first full-length biography of the man who, during his brief writing career, published a succession of bright, satirical, and sometimes perfectly crafted short stories that have entertained and amused readers in many countries for well over a half-century. Hector Munro was the third child of Charles Augustus Munro, a British police officer in Burma, and his wife Mary Frances. The children were all born in Burma. Pregnant with her fourth child, Mrs. Munro was brought with the children to live with her husband’s family in England until the child arrived. Frightened by the charge of a runaway cow on a country lane, Mrs. Munro died after a miscarriage. Since the widowed father had to return to Burma, the children — Charles, Ethel, and Hector — were left with their Munro grandmother and her two dominating and mutually antagonistic spinster daughters, Charlotte (“Aunt Tom”) and Augusta. This situation would years later provide incidents, characters, and themes for a number of Hector Munro’s short stories as well as this epitaph for Augusta by Ethel: “A woman of ungovernable temper, of fierce likes and dislikes, imperious, a moral coward, possessing no brains worth speaking of, and a primitive disposition.

  • Lewis Carroll Review
Lewis Carroll Review The Reviewing Journal of the Lewis Carroll Society Editor’s Welcome I am honoured and excited to take over the editorship of the Lewis Carroll Review from Amanda Lastoria, in what is turning out to be exciting times for Carrollians. This issue appears in a politically eventful time that has already had an immense Carrollian echo, which this issue will honour in a themed section on ‘Alice and Satire’. It will also give space to some of the authors who have chosen Alice as a medium to reflect on recent political, social and cultural developments in the section ‘Five Questions’. Alice has always been political right from its creation to more recent times, and sense and nonsense, reality and fiction freely intermingle in the guise of Carroll’s creations. Since the Hansard, the archive of all parliamentary debates at the Westminster parliament, went online, it has recorded 148 spoken references to ‘Alice in Wonderland’, 35 to ‘Lewis Carroll’, 38 to the ‘Queen of Hearts’, 87 to the ‘Red Queen’ (most of them, in fact, referring the Queen of Hearts), 15 to the ‘White Rabbit’, 9 to the ‘Mad Hatter’ and 10 to the ‘Mad Tea-Party’ – more than 150 years after the publication of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. Popular (more or less accurate) direct quotations from the Alice books include ‘verdict first, sentence afterwards’ (Conservative MP Stephen Phillips’s opinion of the Leveson enquiry in 2011), ‘six impossible things before breakfast’, or ‘down the rabbit hole’ (Labour Co-operative Chris Leslie on the European Union Withdrawal Bill in December 2017).

This relationship is called comitatus. Wergild: Blood-price, death price or blood- feud. Old English period: (from the invasion of Britain by Germanic tribes (449) till the Norman Conquest of 1066) The Anglo-Saxon and Scandinavian peoples had invaded the island of Britain and settled there several hundred years earlier, bringing with them several closely related Germanic languages that would evolve into Old English. Most of Old English literature is religious Oral tradition Many of the works of literature from the Old English period are anonymous. Early Germanic poetry was composed and recited by the scop, a professional bard who wandered from one court to another, hoping to acquire the patronage of some generous lords. Literacy was restricted to men of the church With the conversion of England to Christianity oral literature was written down by clerics.
