Johnson (Department Head) ii ABSTRACT OF THESIS ESTIMATING CONTRIBUTIONS OF PRIMARY BIOMASS COMBUSTION TO FINE PARTICULATE MATTER AT SITES IN THE WESTERN UNITED STATES Biomass combustion occurs throughout the world and has many implications for human health, air quality and visibility, and climate change. To better understand the impacts of biomass combustion in the western United States, six-day integrated fine particle samples were collected during the winter and summer seasons of 2004-2006 at seven IMPROVE sampling sites using Hi-Vol samplers. These sites included both urban and rural locations. Filter samples were analyzed for organic and elemental carbon, levoglucosan, and a suite of particulate ions. Levoglucosan, a thermal degradation product of cellulose, is a widely used tracer for primary biomass combustion. Measurements of levoglucosan and other carbohydrates were made using a new approach involving aqueous filter extraction followed by direct analysis using High Performance Anion Exchange Chromatography. In this method carbohydrates are separated on a Dionex Carbopac PA-10 column and detected using pulsed amperometry. Source profiles for primary biomass combustion were applied to each of these samples to estimate the contributions of carbon from both residential wood burning (during the winter seasons) and wildland fires (during the summer seasons). Wildland fire source profiles were determined from FLAME (Fire Lab at Missoula Experiment) campaigns at the USFS/USDA Fire Science Lab in Missoula, MT, during which fine particle samples were collected from source burns of approximately 30 fuel types. Residential wood combustion source profiles were collected from the literature. iii Primary biomass combustion contributions to contemporary PM2.5 carbon, determined separately from carbon isotope measurements at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, ranged from 0.4% to more than 100%. Contributions of primary biomass combustion were higher at rural sites, while urban sites showed greater contributions of fossil carbon. Primary biomass combustion contributed a larger fraction of total carbon in the summer at southern sites, while northern sites had larger contributions during the colder winter months. Amanda S.     #OPERAHARMONY CREATING OPERAS IN ISOLATION 1 3 WELCOME TO #OPERA HARMONY FROM FOUNDER – ELLA MARCHMENT Welcome to #OperaHarmony. #Opera Harmony is a collection of opera makers from across the world who, during this time of crisis, formed an online community to create new operas. I started this initiative when the show that I was rehearsing at Dutch National Opera was cancelled because of the lockdown. Using social media and online platforms I invited colleagues worldwide to join me in the immense technical and logistical challenge of creating new works online. I set the themes of ‘distance’ and ‘community’, organised artist teams, and since March have been overseeing the creation of twenty new operas. All the artists involved in #OperaHarmony are highly skilled professionals who typically apply their talents in creating live theatre performances. Through this project, they have had to adapt to working in a new medium, as well as embracing new technologies and novel ways of creating, producing, and sharing work. #OperaHarmony’s goal was to bring people together in ways that were unimaginable prior to Covid-19. Over 100 artists from all the opera disciplines have collaborated to write, stage, record, and produce the new operas. The pieces encapsulate an incredibly dark period for the arts, and they are a symbol of the unstoppable determination, and community that exists to perform and continue to create operatic works. This has been my saving grace throughout lockdown, and it has given all involved a sense of purpose. When we started building these works we had no idea how they would eventually be realised, and it is with great thanks that we acknowledge the support of Opera Vision in helping to both distribute and disseminate these pieces, and also for establishing a means in which audiences can be invited into the heart of the process too .

    Amanda Holden Amanda Holden plays Mia Bevan façade to cover her own emotional turmoil.“The reaction to my character turned out to be nicer than I thought,” says the Mountview Theatre school graduate.“People felt so sorry for her in the end. I so enjoyed playing someone who was on the surface a real cow, but underneath was lonely, unhappy and just plain desperate.” Joining the cast is glamorous actress Cherie Lunghi as Zinnia Raggitt, Mia’s mother.“Zinnia turns up out of the blue – she’s a pain in the neck and an embarrassment,” says Holden.“Mia doesn’t want to be seen dead with her because she’s an ex-porn star from LA. Mia’s quite a snob and doesn’t want anyone to know, either, so we’ve got all that tension with a bit of comedy thrown in, which is great.” The popular actress, whose own marriage to comedian Les Dennis ended last December after seven years, talks with affection about her friendship with on-screen rival Sarah Parish.“Sarah and I have fun every day,” says Holden with fondness.“I think we’re very similar to each other.We both enjoy our lives and are strikingly confident women.We’ve also got a lot of front, yet we’re both quite vulnerable. She gets me into trouble all the time, particularly on set when she grasses me up and blames me for talking or laughing.
