The days are at their darkest outside but here in London, and at our Brands Hatch and Old Windsor centres, our warm and bright kennels and cattery pens are sparkling with tinsel, and the calming music we play to soothe our dogs and cats is turning festive. I’ve loved reading memories of special Christmases at Battersea on page 26, and I’m sharing my favourite seasonal memory there too. The dogs and cats who’ll be spending their Christmas holidays at Battersea have only one wish on their list for Santa – a new home. If you have space in front of your fire this winter, turn to page 24 to meet some of our current residents. Northern breeds like the Siberian Husky, Northern Inuit and Akita are increasingly chosen as family pets, and this year well over 100 have found themselves at Battersea. On page 22, we look at these stunning dogs and the commitment and work they need to be good companions and pets. And there’s still time to order a gift or two from our treasure trove of Christmas 2013 Goodies, so I hope you’ll find plenty of stocking fillers to tempt you. Committee on Graduate work _______________________________________ Dr. Charles S. Henry (Outside Committee Member) _______________________________________ Dr. Sonia M. Kreidenweis (Committee Member) _______________________________________ Dr. Jeffrey L. Collett, Jr. (Adviser) _______________________________________ Dr. Richard H. Johnson (Department Head) ii ABSTRACT OF THESIS ESTIMATING CONTRIBUTIONS OF PRIMARY BIOMASS COMBUSTION TO FINE PARTICULATE MATTER AT SITES IN THE WESTERN UNITED STATES Biomass combustion occurs throughout the world and has many implications for human health, air quality and visibility, and climate change. To better understand the impacts of biomass combustion in the western United States, six-day integrated fine particle samples were collected during the winter and summer seasons of 2004-2006 at seven IMPROVE sampling sites using Hi-Vol samplers. These sites included both urban and rural locations. Filter samples were analyzed for organic and elemental carbon, levoglucosan, and a suite of particulate ions. Levoglucosan, a thermal degradation product of cellulose, is a widely used tracer for primary biomass combustion. Measurements of levoglucosan and other carbohydrates were made using a new approach involving aqueous filter extraction followed by direct analysis using High Performance Anion Exchange Chromatography.

  • Views from a School Bus Window: Stories of the Children Who Ride
VIEWS FROM A SCHOOL BUS WINDOW: STORIES OF THE CHILDREN WHO RIDE LORRAINE ROBBINS B.Ed., University of Lethbridge, 1978 A Project Submitted to the School of Graduate Studies of the University of Lethbridge in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree MASTER OF EDUCATION FACULTY OF EDUCATION LETHBRIDGE, ALBERTA February 2004 Dedication This project is dedicated to the rural children who ride school buses and to the students who I was able to interview. I thank them and their families for their help and support, and I hope that by writing their stories, a difference will be made to the rides that they will take everyday in the future. in Abstract Everyday, hundreds of students in rural areas of Alberta and other parts of Canada start their day by boarding a big yellow school bus, the vehicle that transports them to and from school. For them, their school day begins and ends with a bus ride. For many, the ride is lengthy. This study presents qualitative research that forms a profile of what concerns students about their bus rides. 62 children from ages 5 to 18 were interviewed to determine what they thought about riding the school bus and what social, psychological and intellectual implications exist for these children. Seven major themes emerged through the interviews: boredom, safety, relationships, community bonding, student behaviour and attitudes, medical concerns, and student responsibilities. Writing their stories, and stories from my memories of riding the bus, is part of the action research involved in this project; a textual reflection on lived experiences.

  • Operaharmony
#OPERAHARMONY CREATING OPERAS IN ISOLATION 1 3 WELCOME TO #OPERA HARMONY FROM FOUNDER – ELLA MARCHMENT Welcome to #OperaHarmony. #Opera Harmony is a collection of opera makers from across the world who, during this time of crisis, formed an online community to create new operas. I started this initiative when the show that I was rehearsing at Dutch National Opera was cancelled because of the lockdown. Using social media and online platforms I invited colleagues worldwide to join me in the immense technical and logistical challenge of creating new works online. I set the themes of ‘distance’ and ‘community’, organised artist teams, and since March have been overseeing the creation of twenty new operas. All the artists involved in #OperaHarmony are highly skilled professionals who typically apply their talents in creating live theatre performances. Through this project, they have had to adapt to working in a new medium, as well as embracing new technologies and novel ways of creating, producing, and sharing work. #OperaHarmony’s goal was to bring people together in ways that were unimaginable prior to Covid-19. Over 100 artists from all the opera disciplines have collaborated to write, stage, record, and produce the new operas. The pieces encapsulate an incredibly dark period for the arts, and they are a symbol of the unstoppable determination, and community that exists to perform and continue to create operatic works. This has been my saving grace throughout lockdown, and it has given all involved a sense of purpose. When we started building these works we had no idea how they would eventually be realised, and it is with great thanks that we acknowledge the support of Opera Vision in helping to both distribute and disseminate these pieces, and also for establishing a means in which audiences can be invited into the heart of the process too .

  • 1 Genesis Notes by Sharon Durant
1 GENESIS NOTES BY SHARON DURANT In the beginning, God… Genesis 1-5 It’s lovely to be able to speak to you and study God’s Word together this evening. Thank you so much for being part of the church family, for all your love and care and support over the past few months. We’re going to study Genesis throughout this year – I am pretty nervous and excited about that all at once. We’re being ambitious and looking to read the whole thing through… but of course there’s only so much time on a Monday night so we will be zooming in on some key moments that keep the thread and focus on God. Why Genesis. I wanted to go right back to the beginning – back to the beginning when there was just God – and see how his plan for us reaches down through the ages, through human history, right to me in this very moment, and then beyond into eternity at home with God. I was planning that we would study Genesis even before Coronavirus hit the world. And as the year has worn on, I have felt even more strongly that – for me – this is an essential foundation for my faith and for who I am as as person, as someone who trusts Jesus and follows him, and as a church, as a group of people who are spurring each other on to love and doing good things for each other and the world around us, to the glory of God, amen. WHEN THE MUSIC FADES All is stripped away And I simply come This last 7 months I feel like I have been living this song.

  • Turn Back Time: the Family
TURN BACK TIME: THE FAMILY In October 2011, my lovely wife, Naomi, responded to an advert from TV production company Wall to Wall. Their assistant producer, Caroline Miller, was looking for families willing to take part in a living history programme. They wanted families who were willing to live through five decades of British history. At the same time, they wanted to retrace the history of those families to understand what their predecessors would have been doing during each decade. Well, as you may have already guessed, Wall to Wall selected the Goldings as one of the five families to appear in the programme. Shown on BBC1 at 9pm from Tuesday 26th June 2012, we were honoured and privileged to film three of the five episodes. As the middle class family in the Edwardian, inter war and 1940s periods, we quite literally had the most amazing experience of our lives. This page of my blog is to share our experiences in more detail – from selection, to the return to normal life! I have done this in parts, starting with ‘the selection process’ and ending with the experience of another family. Much of what you will read was not shown on TV, and may answer some of your questions (those of you who watched it!!). I hope you enjoy reading our story. Of course, your comments are very welcome. PART 1 – THE SELECTION PROCESS I will never forget the moment when I got home from work to be told by Naomi that she had just applied for us to be part of a TV programme.
