24 COMING HOME POWERHOUSE 25 BATTERSEA In 2014, a team of internationally renowned VIEW photographers began documenting the redevelopment of Battersea Power Station, the Grade II* listed London landmark.

POWER STATION These photographs aim to provide perspective on the project in its wider context and highlight the Power Station’s idiosyncratic and often unseen details. Taken between June 2014 and September 2015, this selection of images illustrate some key moments in the construction project, including progress with Circus West (the first phase of the project) and the rebuilding of the chimneys.

VIEW, founded in 1997, is a specialist architectural image archive. The creative team is led by VIEW co-founder, Dennis Gilbert who has been based in London since the early ’80s. In 2005, the Royal Institute of British Architects awarded him an Honorary Fellowship for his contribution to Architecture. Two leading architectural photographers join Dennis on this project: Kilian O’Sullivan and Anthony Coleman. The team are supported by Susan Bockelmann who works behind the scenes managing the growing image archive.

The images will be used by shareholders of the site, S P Setia, Sime Darby and Employees’ Provident Fund, the Battersea Power Station Development Company, and the contractors and consultants on the project. They will form a lasting legacy, demonstrating the hard work, ingenuity and creativity shown by the many people entrusted with the care of this much-loved landmark.

art’otel signs up at Battersea

World-renowned ‘lifestyle’ hotel operator art’otel has checked in to the Battersea Power Station project to create a 160-room luxury hotel with art at its heart.

The scheme, which will feature a rooftop swimming pool overlooking the River Thames and Grade II* Power Station structure, will open in 2019 in the building designed by Foster + Partners on Electric Boulevard. It will include skyline floors with panoramic views, as well as a signature destination restaurant which operators PPHE Hotel Group hope will become a favourite destination in the capital.

Guests will be greeted with a public gallery—a multi-purpose creative space offering a rotating calendar of exhibitions and other artistic events. A lounge and café will sit alongside, while the rooftop pool—designed by New York’s High Line team, making James Corner Field Operations will include a bar overlooking the station’s iconic chimneys.

‘We are incredibly excited to be announcing this important transaction and for it to be with such an innovative hotel company’, said Rob Tincknell, CEO of Battersea Power Station Development Company. ‘The selection process to find the right brand and operator was a very competitive and thorough one, involving the leading hotel brands from around the world. art’otel was a standout winner, a brand unlike a splash anything we have seen in London to date, and it is particularly fitting for it to have art at the very heart of the brand and the hotel itself. I am confident that together with art’otel we will deliver a beyond expectations hotel’.

Boris Ivesha, President and Chief Executive Officer, PPHE Hotel Group added;

‘We are delighted to be a part of the London of tomorrow. The Battersea Power Station Development will transform London’s skyline; creating a new destination and hub for local communities, visitors and residents. As a company we take pride in opening hotels, restaurants and bars in areas which are embarking on new urban and community journeys, and the Battersea Power Station project is a spectacular example of this. art’otel perfectly complements the shareholders of Battersea Power Station’s vision and we look forward to working together to create a new chapter in London’s history over the next four years’.

The scheme’s design will draw inspiration of art’otel’s award- winning Amsterdam scheme, which since it opened in 2013 has fused innovative design with urban, discussion-provoking art, curated and created by Atelier Van Lieshout.
